Gua

In 1968, Winthrop and Luella Kellogg brought a chimpanzee into their home to raise with their own child. By the age of 16 months, Gua understood about 100 words, which was more than their son at that age. (1) But never went beyond that. Kellogg noted that chimpanzees have a well developed ability to understand simple voiced commands. Although Gua did not develop speech, the Kelloggs' reported that she had a "receptive competence for language if not an expressive one." (2)
