"Soon-to-be-developed-land"
These photographs represent a beginning and ending. The photographs represent the beginning of a new land use. This field, since this town of Gorham, Maine was founded has seen many uses ranging from farmland to dairy cow pasture; always beautiful and now it is now about to be forever preserved.....under a blanket of asphalt. The sign in the left of the field (left pic), just beyond the fence, reads " future home of the school street lutheran church." Now, I would expect sprawl to encrouch on this beautiful parcel of land at the hands of a spiritually blind developer, but at the whim of a congregation? Do these individuals believe Jesus would bless this construction....the builidng materials from Home Depot, where the wood is not locally cut and manufactured, but cut in Borneo, where deforestation is destroying the already endangered environment. Or the asphalt, processed from petroliuem from the middle east, probably from Iraq or Suadi Arabia (see, the war had a purpose afterall?). Another open space gone.
Oh, but wait, think I would end a story on a melancholy note rather than a outright sad one? OF course not, and to add insult to injury for this soon to be raped land, I stumbled upon this whilest seeking an adiquate spot to take a picture....
![]() Yes, that is the copper-top. Carelessly discarded by a passerby most likely. If one individual is so irresponsible to the land to discard a small lead bomb like the one above, what more would one expect from a congregation than to forever seal it under asphalt?
