In the name of God, Amen! I Stirring Brinson, planter of the county of Onslow and state of North Carolina, being of a weak and low state of health and body but of sound mind and memory, calling to mind the certainty of death, transitoriness of this life, do make and ordain this my last will and testamine, disannulling and revoking all former wills made by me at any time, acknowledging this and none other to be my last will as manner following, i.e., first of all I recommend my soul to Almighty God who gave it, and my body to be decently buried at the discretion of my Esecutors, hereafter named and as for such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with, I beaqeath in manner following:

In primus: I do lend to my loving wife, Anna Brinson, during her widowhood the house and plantation whereon I now live, with two ploughs, four hoes, one grubbing hoe, two axes, also three beds, with their furniture with all the remaining part of the house, and kitchen furniture during her widowhood, only such legacies as of hereafter bequeathed.

Item: I do lend to my loving wife during widowhood two horses and one mare, seven cows, two four-year-old steers, two heifers of two year old, one steer and one bull of two years old, three yearlings, with all my stock of hogs out of which my wife must pay the principle of 17 pounds with interest to Sarah Brinson, Jr, likewise one bull and steer of six years old to pay 10L with the interest thereon to George Brinson. Likewise, I lend my wife 8 sheep and three shocks of bees during widowhood.

Item: I give and bequeath to my loving son, Moses Brinson, 100 acres of land granted to Adam Brinson, deceased, being and lying near the fork of mill branch on the SW of New River to my loving son, Moses Brinson, one hundred acres of land lying on the nine mile.....

Item: I do leave to my beloved wife, Anna Brinson, our 5 children to her discretion so long as they behave well.

Item: I give and bequeath to my son, Moses Brinson, one mare and saddle and bridle, also four cows, one two-year-old heifer, two colts a year old, with their increase, one gun, one pair stilyeards, one axe, one Iron wedge.

Item: I give and bequeath to my beloved son, David Brinson, 220 acres of land, being that which I bought of Robert Nison and James Howard, Esq.

Item: I give and bequeath all the other part of my estate not given to the boys to be divided in manner following, viz:

My wife, if marrying to have one fourth part of that, the next to be equally divided amongst my three loving daughters, viz: Jerusha, Faraby, and Anna Brinson, and I do appoint these my trusty and well beloved friends to execute this my last will and testament, viz: Daniel Yates, William Jones, and Anna Brinson.

In witness whereof, I have set my hand and fixed my seal this 27th day of January, one thousand seven hundred and seventy eight.

This man's name was, obviously, Sterling Brinson, named for his mother's family. I suspect that the accent of the family made it sound like "Stirring". When the will was drawn up, it was surely not written out by this dying man, but a person with legal authority to do so. He signed his name as Stirring. Perhaps, even he, thought that was how it was spelled. People were not as literate in those days as we are now. - JPC

In the name of God, Amen.

I, Adam Brinson, of Onslow County in North Carolina, being sick in body, but of sound mind and memory,knowing it is God's appointment for all men to die owning and acknowledging the Christian faith, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament, in form and manner following: First my Will is that all my just debts and funeral charges be paid in some convenient time after my death, at the descretion of my Executors.

Item: I give and bequeath to my eldest son, Stiring Brinson, one hundred acres of land joining Skippers Line to be laid off at the discretion of my Executors, to him and his heirs forever.

Item: I give and bequeath to my son, Mathew Brinson, that part of my land joining my brother Mathew, including the New Field and other land, suitable for a settlement, to be laid off at the discretion of my Executors, to him and his heirs forever.

Item: I give and bequeath to my son, Adam Brinson, that part of my land where my son Stiring did formerly live (the rent of it reserved to Stiring six years) to him and his heirs forever.

Item: I give and bequeath to my son John Brinson, the rest of my land, including the plantation where I now live, to him and his heirs forever.

Item: I give and bequeath to my son Isaac Brinson, a sum of mo;ney to the value of the land I give to Adam or Mathew to be put out to interest for his use to him and his heirs forever.

Item: My Will is that all of the rest of my estate be equally divided between my well beloved wife, Sarah Brinson, and my son, Stiring Brinson, and my four daughters, namely: Nancy, Pheby, Apsila, and Sarah Brinson, first charging Stiring with what I have given him, without this will, to them and their heirs forever.

The division to be made at any time or times when necessity may require, according to the discretion of my Executors. I do also appoint and authorize my well beloved friends, Ezekiel Hunter, Robert Nixon and my son, Stiring, the Executors of this my last Will and Testament, utterly revoking all other Will or Wills, owning this only to be my last Will and Testament, in witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 12th day of February, 1769.
