My spelling is all screwed up, cause I am at work right now - but I read in aCoK last night when Tyrion visited the guild to check on the production of the wyldfire (sp?) and they talked about their dark arts and additional abilities...was wondering if they were from the shadow land of Assai (sp?) like Melisandre. Anyone have a comment?

IIRC it's not spelled out, but I believe that they are all, or mainly, from Westeros.
There was mention of their decline of influence over the centuries - mostly lost to the maesters' Citadel.
I suppose this organization could originally have overseas origin, but now it's likely a fully home-grown organization.

I'm pretty certain that the origins were overseas, but that'd be far in the past. We don't get a mention of any pyromancers in the East now, though there could be. We do know, however, that there are alchemists (a Frey is apprenticed to one) and "firemages" who knew how to do various tricks with wildfire.

You will learn some things about pyromancers in ASOS.
