My relatively newbie-curse is rearing its ugly head again: have we already discussed music?

Let me know before I write a friggin essay on music.

Jeff, I talked about Percy Sledge and his like, and you feel old? :-)
Actually, my boyfriend is older than you, and likes more modern music than I do. It's a question of taste, not of age (well, it somehow is in your teens, but it shapes a bit more later - I liked bands way back then I cannot stand anymore. Some, like DM, I find still great).

Remember that Marines comercial back in the day? The one with the guy fighting all the chess pieces? What was the song called that they used for that?

Some of you folks need to be connected to the social pipeline...

My musical tastes run all over the charts.

Billy Joel, Brandy, Corrs, Dr. Dre, Everclear, Jay-Z, Lauryn Hill, Methods of Mayhem, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, TLC, Bush, Creed, Enya, GN'F'R, U2, Weezer, Eagles, Santana, Queen.

BTW, I have all these on MP3 + alot more. Send me an e-mail if you want to do some trading!

Zer0hour, I really can't remember the commercial, much less the song.

I'm not too fond of that ad campaign myself. I think its sort of juvenile. The very first ad in that campaign was the one that focused solely on the forging of the sword and ended with the tag line "Maybe you have the mettle [metal] to be one of us..." Now _that_ was a cool add.

What about live bands - who do people think give the best performance live that they've seen?

I've seen the Levellers quite a few times, and they are outstanding - always tight as anything, great atmosphere, great lightshow even though, or perhaps because, they don't use loads of the latest technology, it just fits really well with the music).

Pinnk Floyd are amazing live, although I'm not old enough to have seen them in their glory days - at the concert i saw, though, after playing loads of their new stuff, they played the whole of Dark Side of the Moon - sheer class.

I was at Pink Floyd's The Wall concert in Berlin, and nothing will ever be the same live...

though I liked Nick Cave live, too. A completely different style of live performance, but I really liked it.

Min, you're my god... the Wall, onstage...

As far as best live album goes, Portishead's PNYC is undoubtedly either the best or of equal quality. They came to Seattle a couple of years ago, and I just missed buying a ticket because they sold out.

I saw Peter Gabriel live a few times and I think he's great in concert.

My favorite, though, was when I was 13. I saw Deep Puple in 1975 (I think). The organs almost vibrated my body to pieces. Sweet.

Live album? Social D's Live at the Roxy. Good one. Swithin I take it you live in Seattle? I'm moving to Bellingham in a month.

Gen.Eric, why Bellingham? Did you find a tech job or are you going to the school of natural medicine they have up there? (BTW, no offense, those are the two biggest reasons people move to Bellingham.)

Sadly, I lost contact with all my GRRM friends in Seattle when I left high school. Still, if you ever drop by, I'll show you around. Seattle is a very nice place to be. (And yes, that was a locative. I am *not* Seattle! Stop calling me!)

Min, it's a toss up for who I am most envious of: you or my friend at work who saw Jimi at the Isle of Wight festival.

Swithin, PNYC is just amazing. I saw them twice live, both at Glastonbury Festival. The second time was in the pouring rain, and it was about the only time that the rain seemed cool... it just went with the music, and you know sometimes when you're just soaked through and you don't care anymore? - that was where I was. Cool.

David Bowie is a class act live, although again, I suspect he was better when I was too young to see him.

Of course, Depeche Mode 101 is the best live album ever, without a doubt...

DM 101 is quite quite incredible. I'd have to say that Shake the Disease sounds even better live. Damn I love that song.

Oh, Bowie, yes... *starts dreaming*... well, he belongs in both topics... Good Music and Gift of Men... oh, those bicolored eyes... *sigh*
