McCune wins 4th gold Logie
By PETER WILMOTH
Monday 1 May 2000
Her entrance in front of fans screaming her name and her arrival fashionably late might
have provided a good clue to Lisa
McCune's fourth consecutive gold Logie.
The former Blue Heelers actor last night
became the first woman to win four gold
Logies. The silver Logie for most popular
actor went to the man who played opposite
her in the show, Martin Sacks.
"The tenth and the last for a long time
maybe," McCune said in accepting the
award.
"Firstly can I please thank all the wonderful
viewers who have supported Blue Heelers
and everything else on Australian television.
"(Thank you) especially for your support of
me. You have picked me up and you have
elevated me to a point where people want to
come and see me in other things." A humble McCune told a news
conference afterwards "I can't begin to describe to you how humbling ...
you appreciate it more than you can say," she said. "There are people all
over this country who I will never meet or see who have voted for me.
"Tonight is a very weird time for me - here I am winning awards for a
character who has been and gone. Hopefully we will always remember
her with a lot of love."
For the second year in a row the Logie awards disappointed those who
used to tune in just to endure the pain of watching a supermarket
magazine popularity contest.
Andrew Denton's performance last night was again inspired, wiping some
of the Cheshire cat smiles off the faces of Australian television celebrities,
even if he does seem now on a mission to out-Denton himself.
Denton homed in on James Packer upon whose knee he sat last year
causing Mr Packer to lament: "Where's Daryl?" referring to the safer and
less interesting Daryl Somers, who used to sometimes host the Logies.
He asked Mr Packer: "Is the food okay, is the wine okay, is there anyone
we can sack? Every time a Channel Nine personality is sacked another
ruby grows on your dad's farm because, let's be honest, you're wealthy
buggers. I was watching the news the other night and the usual images, a
politician, an airline, a gold mine, some football team ... to us, that's the
news, to you, that's the home shopping channel."
Denton asked Don Burke if he had always had a beard. "Yes, fake for
the first six years, real now." Denton responded: "What about the
personality, real or fake?".
Denton jibed at Channel Seven's watermark, the Seven logo that is
permanently at the bottom of the screen. "Where are my manners?" he
said. "I shouldn't be talking to anyone on television without one of these."
Denton said to Sam Newman: "The facelift - nobody would ever know."
Denton asked Tom Gleisner from The Panel: "Have you considered
renaming The Panel 'The Bored' because that's how Rob Sitch looked all
year?"
The ABC's SeaChange won Most Outstanding Drama Series, while its
star, Sigrid Thornton, won the Logie for Most Outstanding Actress in a
Series.
Accepting her award, Thornton apologised for the tattered scrap of paper
from which she read her thanks.
"We shot late last night and I've only got a third of my brain left standing,"
she said.
She said she was proud to be nominated for the award for her part as
Laura, which she described as "a gem of a role".
Perhaps the most interesting Logie award went to Channel Nine's Hey,
Hey It's Saturday, which won the most popular comedy - light
entertainment program. Hey, Hey was cancelled last year because of
poor ratings outside Melbourne.
Accepting the show's 12th and final award, host Daryl Somers, said it
was the most appreciated.
"I don't think it's until you finish a show like Hey Hey It's Saturday that
you realise how privileged you were to have a 28-year run with the one
show and I really appreciate it," Somers said.
A male anti-nuclear protester who interrupted television celebrities
arriving at the red carpeted entrance at Crown was a knock out in a blue
knee-length dress.
But the man didn't have time to show off his fashion choice as Crown's
security bundled the small group of protesters out with such force a
Channel Seven sound recordist was pushed into the window of an
adjacent shop.
The protesters carried banners including "Howard wins Glowgie for
nuclear madness", they shouted "Nuclear free future!"
The sound recordist, Chris Martin, claimed security had pushed him after
"it got a bit heated". "We were all just doing our job. Their reaction didn't
help."
A spokesman for Crown casino, Gary O'Neil, last night said Crown has
apologised to Mr Martin. "It was an unfortunate incident and it was
regrettable. They were security people trying to do their job."
It was not known last night whether charges would be laid against the
protesters.
