Prologue:
1873--Europe
Angelus waited patiently for his enemy to arrive. He'd made sure that the bait would be sufficient to lure the fool right to him. (Pathetic human!)
"Angelus!! Show yourself, you bastard!"
(Oh, good. The entertainment shall now begin.)
"Patrick, my dear boy, whatever is the matter?"
"Where is she? What have you done with her?"
Angelus watched the young man intently.
"Have you lost someone? Tsk, tsk, how careless of you."
"If you've hurt her, I'll kill you!"
"That I would very much like to see. But, I will spare you the need for anymore theatrics."
With a snap of his fingers, Angelus called forward a vampire from the shadows. He was holding a beautiful young woman, bound and gagged. Her eyes were wide with fear as she glanced from Angelus to the man she loved.
Angelus grabbed the woman around the neck with enough pressure to cause pain.
"Could this be what you're looking for?"
"Let her go. It's me you're after. Here I am."
"But where's the fun in that. You have been stirring up the villagers, causing annoying problems for me. You should learn to keep your nose out of other people's business."
Patrick watched in stunned horror as Angelus snapped Caitlyn's neck. She dropped to the ground like a ragdoll.
"NO!!!"
Patrick rushed toward his fallen love, only to be shoved back by Angelus.
"This is all your fault, you know. None of this would've happened if you would have kept your mouth shut."
"I had to warn the other's about what you are."
"Ahh, a man of honor. Tell me, Patrick. Was it worth Caitlyn's life?"
"You won't get away with this. The villagers will hunt you down."
"I don't think so. You see, they are smarter then you are. They know better then to cause me trouble."
"So, what are you waiting for? Kill me!"
Angelus walked over to the man and delivered a blow that knocked Patrick into the wall behind him. A few more well placed kicks and punches left Patrick sprawled on the floor, fatally wounded.
"That would be too easy. I had nothing against young Caitlyn, so she died quickly. However, you, I have a problem with. So, I'm going to leave you here, with your beloved's body. And you will die a slow, painful death."
"You'll pay for this. I swear on my Caitlyn's memory, I will find a way to make you pay!! No matter what it takes."
"Nice sentiment....for a dead man."
Angelus walked away, already focused on his next victim.
"ANGELUS!!!"
Patrick screamed at the retreating vampire. Patrick turned to see the lifeless body of the only person he'd ever loved. (I swear to you my love, I will destroy him. But how?)
Patrick soon passed out from the pain of his injuries. However, before the darkness claimed him, he saw a shadow approach him. And he felt himself lifted off the ground....then nothing.
1998--Sunnydale
The man hid in the shadows, observation his only purpose. His search for Angelus had brought him to America....to this town. It hadn't taken him long to feel the power of the Hellmouth, and the presence of the Slayer. He hadn't figured out why the Slayer hadn't destroyed Angelus yet, she'd had plenty of opportunities. But, that was fine with him. Revenge belonged to him, and no one else. It had taken him lifetimes to gain the knowledge and power he now possesed, and it had cost him everything....including his honor, and his soul. But it would be worth it once he had destroyed his enemy.
Patrick had watched Angelus' torment of the Slayer and her friends. He had watched the way he manipulated and played mind games with them. That had given him the perfect idea for his revenge. (So, my old friend, you enjoy playing games. Then I guarantee you'll love my game!) All that remained was to select the pawn. Patrick had chosen carefully, and she would be perfect. (The time for retribution is here. Let the games begin!) Patrick laughed, before he disappeared in a cloud of smoke.
Chapter 1
Buffy, Xander, and Willow were walking through the park when Buffy sensed an evil presence.
"We've got company." Buffy announced.
Buffy pulled out a stake, while Xander and Willow surveyed the park.
"Well, well,well....what do we have here?"
"What do you want, Angel?"
"Buffy, I'm hurt. Can't I just stop by to say hi?"
Before anyone could respond, a figure appeared in a swirl of smoke. Buffy and the others stared in disbelief at the apparition. Angelus growled.
"Greetings!" Patrick spoke casually.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
Angelus walked toward Patrick, hatred blazing in both men's eyes.
"Thought I was dead, didn't you?"
Buffy cautiously approached the two men, with Xander and Willow following close behind.
"I really hate to interrupt this little reunion, but who the hell are you?"
Patrick turned toward the Slayer. Then his gaze shifted to Xander, then to Willow.
"Allow me to introduce myself. I am Patrick, an old....acquaintance of Angelus."
"He's a damn pest who's had too much time on his hands. You never could do anything right....you even botched up dying." Angelus taunted from beside Buffy.
Patrick lost his patience, and turned toward the man who had ruined his life.
"You son-of-a-bitch! You destroyed my life, and I swore I'd do anything I had to do in order to make you pay. I've dedicated my life to learning the black arts. Now the time has come for you to suffer the same way you made me suffer. After all, I know how much you love to play games."
With a wave of his hands, Patrick sent up a burst of light that temporarily blinded everyone. (It has begun!)
Buffy was the first to regain her sight.
"What the....?"
Her question died in her throat as she looked for her friends. Xander was standing beside her, rubbing his eyes. Patrick stood in front of her, but there was no sign of Angel or Willow.
"What have you done!?"
"I've finally put my plan in motion. But it's no concern of yours."
Buffy grabbed Patrick by the shirt and shook him.
"Wrong! You got a score to settle with Angel, that's your problem. But you mess with Willow, then it becomes my problem. Now, where is she?"
"With Angelus." Patrick replied evenly.
"Are you crazy? He'll kill her! She's never done anything to you."
"Oh, don't worry. He can't kill her, that would defeat the purpose of the game. But she is vital to my plan, and she will be sacrificed."
Buffy tried to hit him, but her hand went straight through his body.
"What do you mean....sacraficed? You just said Angel wouldn't hurt her."
"That's right. I don't intend to discuss my plan with you, Slayer. But, I will tell you this. Angelus will try to save the girl, but she will die. Not by his hands..... but by mine. I will destroy her, while Angelus watches helplessly."
"NO!! I don't know what your issues are with Angel, but leave Willow out of it. She's innocent."
"So was Caitlyn."
"Who...?" Buffy began.
"Enough! Your friend will be the key to Angelus' destruction. An eye for an eye!"
With that, Patrick disappeared.
Buffy rushed to Xander.
"Are you alright?"
"I'm fine. Where's Willow?"
"I don't know. Come on, we have to talk to Giles."
"If Angel hurts her, I'll kill him myself." Xander threatened.
Buffy thought over what Patrick had said, and shook her head.
"It's not Angel we have to worry about this time, Xander."
"How can you say that?"
Buffy repeated what Patrick had said. Xander grew visibly paler.
"My God! You mean we have to depend on Angel to keep Willow safe?"
"Hurry, we have to find Giles."
Buffy and Xander headed toward the library. They had to pray that Giles would be able to shed some light on this. Because neither of them were too confident that Angel would lift a finger to protect Willow.
The Maze:
Angelus surveyed his surroundings. (Damn! I should've finished that twit off when I had the chance.) It was then that he noticed he wasn't alone. Willow stood with her back toward him.
"What are you doing here?"
Willow shrugged her shoulders, but didn't turn around.
"What the hell are you looking at?"
Angelus walked over to Willow and looked into the direction that had caught her attention. (What is this?)
"Recognize this place, Angelus?" It looked like the place where he had killed Caitlyn.
Angel turned toward the voice. Without a second's hesitation, Angel attacked, but failed to connect with his enemy. Willow stood back, and watched silently.
"I told you I spent a long time studying. I'm the one with the power now."
"So, you want revenge. Kill me now." Angel taunted.
"What was it you once said? Killing you would be too easy."
"Then what do you want?"
"To play a game. My game, my rules."
Angel looked ready to kill. However, he controlled his rage, what he needed was to find out what Patrick had in mind. Patrick took Angel's silence in stride. He motioned Willow to come forward. Slowly, Willow came to stand beside Angel. She didn't trust Angel, but at least she knew what to expect from him. This Patrick guy scared her to death.
"Now, shall we begin."
Patrick paced back and forth in front of Willow and Angel while he related the 'rules' of his game.
"It's really very simple. You must find your way through the maze, and arrive at the other end....together. If only one makes it out, they will die anyway. If you both make it out, you'll be free to return to Sunnydale."
Patrick noticed the skeptical look on Angelus' face. (Always the suspicious one. Of course, I never said you'd return alive.)
"And you expect me to believe that. I'm not a fool Patrick."
"No one could ever accuse you of being a fool. There will of course be certain....shall we say, obstacles, in the maze."
"Naturally. But why take the chance that we'll make it out. You're so powerful, why not just destroy me now?"
"Oh, Angelus. Where's your sense of adventure? Besides, I know you too well, my friend. You work alone, and I have no doubt that you won't make it to the other end with the girl. If you don't kill her yourself, then you'll leave her to face the dangers in the maze alone."
Willow glanced back and forth between the two men. (This just keeps getting better and better.)
"We'll just see about that, Patrick. I will make it through this childish game of yours, and then I'll finish what I started years ago."
"I look forward to it. Now, you may begin."
Angel watched Patrick disappear. (I don't like this. Something doesn't add up, but I don't have time to figure it out now. The sooner we get through this damn thing, the sooner I can take care of unfinished business.)
"Let's go."
Angel turned when Willow didn't immediately follow him.
"What are you waiting for?"
Willow couldn't move. Maybe if she didn't enter the maze, this would just end.
"Look, I'm not exactly excited about this either. But, I intend to get through this thing, and if I have to drag you along, then so be it."
"How can I trust you?" Willow whispered.
"How can you not? You heard him, we need to get through together. Besides, I have more important things on my mind then you. So, just do what I say, and I'll get you through the maze. Then you can go back home, and I get my hands on Patrick. Now, let's go."
Angel grabbed Willow's arm, and pulled her toward the maze. (I don't have any choice. If I'm going to have any chance of getting home, I have to listen to Angel. God, please help me through this.)
The two unlikely allies entered the maze. The spot where they entered immediately disappeared. Angel pulled Willow further into the maze, and their journey began.
Chapter 2
Sunnydale:
"Giles, what are we going to do?"
Giles had searched through every book he could find. He had found no answer.
"I'm afraid there's nothing we can do."
Buffy stared at her Watcher in disbelief.
"What do we mean? We have to do something. Willow's life depends on it!"
"No, Buffy. Willow's life depends on Angel."
"Oh, that makes me feel so much better." Xander said sarcastically.
"Listen to me. Whoever Patrick is, he's very powerful. He's the only one who can stop this, and from what you've told me, I don't think that's likely. Which means Angel is Willow's only hope for survival."
"Ok, say for argument's sake, that Angel will protect Willow. That guy said that it wouldn't be enough. He said he would kill Willow himself."
"I don't know Buffy. All we can do is wait...and hope. I'm sorry, I'll keep searching, but that's all we can do." Giles left to look through more books.
"I can't believe this. Why Willow? Why did smoke guy take her?"
"I don't know, Xander. I hate feeling helpless. I'm the Slayer, and I can't do a damn thing to help my best friend."
Xander walked over to comfort Buffy.
"I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I think we have to have faith that Angel will protect Willow."
Buffy looked at Xander as though he were crazy.
"No, just think about it. That Patrick guy seemed pretty certain that Angel would try to save Willow. So maybe we need to hold on to that hope."
Buffy was about to argue, but then realized that it wouldn't accomplish anything. Unless they were able to find a way to get Willow back, all they had was that slim ray of hope.
"But how does a vampire fight someone with Patrick's powers?"
Xander had no answer. Angelus was a clever opponent....merciless, manipulative, dangerous. But, how does that compete with someone who has the power of darkness?
"She'll be fine. Patrick may be more powerful, but Willow and Angel will find a way to beat him. Just remember, Angelus hates losing."
"I guess." Buffy replied, unconvincingly.
The two friends sat silently in the library. Neither wanted to think about the horrors that their friend would face. (Be strong, Willow. We love you.) As Buffy and Xander were about to leave, a cloud of smoke materialized.
"Hello, again."
"What do you want?"
Patrick walked around the library. (Interesting place for the Slayer to hide out.)
"Just thought you'd like to know that Angelus and your little friend have begun their adventure. I am most excited."
"Why are you doing this?"
Patrick saw no reason to avoid the question.
"Angelus murdered my wife, Caitlyn. Then he left me to die, but I didn't. I was given the chance to have eternal life."
"What did you do? Sell your soul?" Xander asked sarcastically.
"Yes, I did. Nothing mattered to me except making Angelus pay for his crime."
"But why involve Willow? This is between you and Angel." Buffy tried to reason with him.
"You don't get it yet, do you?"
Buffy recalled Patrick's words.....'an eye for an eye'.
"But, it's not the same. Angel doesn't care about anyone, especially Willow."
Xander looked back and forth between the two. He had absolutely no idea what they were talking about. He'd obviously missed something.
"Not yet, but he will. With a little help, that is."
"What does that mean?"
"Let's just say that between the dangers they'll face, and a little soul, things will get pretty intense."
"You're giving Angel back his soul?"
"Not exactly. Just enough of it so that his natural protective instincts will shine through. You see, I've done my homework on him. He grew up in a time where gentlemen protected damsels in distress. When he became a vampire, that instinct went out the window, but now I've given it back to him."
"Will someone tell me what the heck you two are talking about?" Xander shouted.
"There's nothing you can do, Slayer. You might as well get used to the idea that they won't be coming back. One way or another, both Angelus and Willow will die."
With that dire prediction, Patrick disappeared.
"Buffy?"
"He's twisted." Buffy said to herself.
"Buffy, what was he talking about!?"
"He's going to let Angel fall in love with Willow, then kill her in front of him. The same way Angelus killed Patrick's wife. An eye for an eye."
"Oh, God!"
"Xander, Patrick has given us real hope."
"How do you figure?"
"If Angel has even a little bit of his soul back, and he does fall in love with Willow...."
"He'll protect her with his life. Just like your Angel would've done for you." Xander finished her sentence.
"Exactly, and maybe that'll be enough to save them both."
The two teenagers rushed to tell Giles what they had learned. It wasn't much, but it was all they had to hold onto.
Chapter 3
The Maze:
Angel was getting real tired of this 'game' real fast. They'd already encountered several of Patrick's obstacles. Things ranging from a mutant ant to a clone of Principal Snyder. That one he had let Willow handle, and she'd taken great pleasure in telling him off....before she pushed him into the electrical fencing.
But there was something else bothering Angel at the moment. His feelings toward Willow had begun to change, and he didn't know why. (I don't give a damn about her!) He kept repeating that to himself, but it didn't change the fact that he had become very protective of her since this mess began. When Snyder had first appeared and grabbed her, Angelus had felt raw fury at the thought that she might be hurt. And he had felt admiration for her when she had faced her fears, and eliminated the threat. (What the hell is happening to me?)
"Angel?"
"What?"
Willow backed up slightly at his tone. (This whole thing is making me nuts. And watching Snyder fry hasn't helped matters. I still can't believe I killed him. Ok, I realize it wasn't really him, but it still freaks me out. Angel's attitude isn't helping either, but I guess I should be thankful that he's keeping me alive.)
Angel watched Willow retreat from him, and immediately softened his reply. Although he didn't know why, it mattered to him.
"What is it?"
"The fencing's gone."
Angel turned to where she pointed. In a matter of moments, their surroundings had changed. Willow now stood where the electrical fence had been, and their choice of routes had moved. (That little prick! I just get a feel for the layout of this stupid maze, and he changes everything. You better pray I don't make it, Patrick. Because if I do, you are a dead man!)
"We've got to keep moving. Who knows what Patrick has lined up next."
Angel grabbed Willow by the hand and choose a path. Willow noticed that although Angel left no room for arguement, his hold on her hand was gentle now. (I don't understand any of this.)
Patrick watched the scene that was developing. (Ahh, it's working already. You are becoming concerned about the girl, and the old protective urges are coming through. Soon, you will come to care for the girl, maybe even love her. Although, in my opinion, you're not capable of love. But we'll see. It only matters to me that you care enough for her that you will fight to save her, and that her death will bring you pain.)
Patrick stood up and began pacing. He was a little disappointed that none of the presents he'd left in the maze had even slowed Angelus down. (I guess I'll just have to move the game to a more advanced level. What shall I give them to face next?)
It seemed as though they had been walking for hours, and they didn't seem to be any closer to finding the way out. Willow was becoming discouraged, Angel was becoming angry.
"Damn it, this is getting us no where." Angel stood looking at the three paths ahead of him.
(Which one do I choose? It probably won't make a difference. If we even get close to the end, Patrick will just change the paths again.)
Angel looked at Willow. Whatever the pull was, it was getting stronger. He found himself drawn to her more and more.
"Are you alright?"
Willow looked up at Angel, surprised. (He's actually concerned about me. When did that happen?) But she was too tired to think too much about his odd behavior.
"I'm fine. We better keep moving."
Willow started toward Angel, when she heard laughter behind her. Suddenly, Angel grabbed her and pulled her to him.
"What was that?"
Angel had no idea where the noise was coming from....or what it was, but he wanted to make sure Willow was safe beside him.
"Angelussssssssssssss........" The voice made his name sound like a hiss.
"Where are you?"
(What are you?)
"I'm right behind you."
Angel swung around, shoving Willow behind him.
"Darla?"
"Miss me?"
Angel stared at the blond vampire standing before him. He knew it couldn't be the real Darla, he'd killed her himself.
"Get out of my way. I'd hate to have to kill you again."
"Oh, dear Angel. There was a time when you would have greeted me very differently. Before you hooked up with the Slayer and her little friends."
The look she gave Willow, sent shivers down the hacker's neck. Unknowingly, she moved closer to Angel.
"Oh, isn't that sweet. You've made another conquest Angelus."
"Back off, Darla. I don't have time for your games."
Angel made the mistake of trying to push past the other vampire. He never saw her raise her hand, but he was soon knocked onto his back.
"What the....."
"My turn, Angel."
Darla took the offensive and attacked Angel. He was able to get to his feet, before he was tackled. (Another of Patrick's tricks, Darla was never this strong.)
Willow stood as she watched Angel and Darla fight. (I have to help him.) She looked around the maze. A tree was visible and she headed toward it. Willow broke off a branch and prayed that it would work. She ran back to the fight, and waited for her opportunity to strike.
Angel was pinned to the ground, unable to move. (I can't believe it's going to end like this.) His next thoughts were of Willow. If he died, so would she. That thought made him renew his fight, but this Darla's strength was too much for him.
"I guess this is goodbye, lover. Don't worry, I'll take care of your little friend."
"No thanks, I prefer Angel."
Darla turned, and was greeted by the branch. The next second, she was dust.
"Are you okay?" Willow asked.
Angel looked at Willow, seeing her for the first time. (No one has ever done anything like that for me before. She saved my life.)
"Angel?"
Angel stood, and walked up to Willow. Then Angelus did something that surprised both of them....he kissed her.
"Thank you."
Willow was taken off guard. (What just happened? Angelus kissed me.....and I enjoyed it. Oh, brother, I'm in trouble.)
"Uhmm, for what?" Willow had completely lost her train of thought.
"Saving my life. I owe you for that."
"Angel, I don't understand....."
"Neither do I. But we don't have time to figure it out now. Later."
"Okay, which way?"
Angel looked closely at the paths. (There has to be some pattern to what Patrick's doing. If I could figure it out, I could get us out of here.)
"This way."
Willow clutched Angel's hand, and they followed the path to the right. (What's next?)
Chapter 4
Willow knew that things weren't getting any better. (We're no closer to finding a way out then we were when we first started.) After they got past Darla, things had only gotten worse. They had managed to destroy whatever Patrick sent at them, but it had taken a toll. Willow glanced at Angel. He took every precaution to keep her safe, but she also remembered what he was....a killer. The way he'd killed in the maze, without any regrets, reminded her of who he was. But, she also knew that if it wasn't for him, she'd be dead already.
Angel kept his mind focused on the maze, but he was aware of Willow. He still doubted his sanity. (Shit, I kissed her. What was I thinking?) Angel knew something had happened. And if it was something that would piss him off, he knew Patrick was behind it. (Ok, you s.o.b., what did you do? Cast some kind of spell? Well, it won't work. I'm keeping her alive because I have to, not because I want to.) "Quit dragging. Don't think I'm going to carry you." Angel yelled Willow.
(Welcome back, Angelus.)
Willow didn't know how much longer she could go on. (I'm so tired, but I can't tell Angel that. I never know which kind of mood he's in. And if he's in his angry-guy mood, he'd leave me just to be mean.)
Willow forced herself to catch up to Angel. Suddenly, her foot was pulled out from underneath her.
"Owwwwww!!!"
Angel turned at the sound of Willow's scream. He saw her lying on the ground, but there was no one around. (What the hell? What does she think this is....nap time.)
Angel's anger evaporated when he reached Willow's side. Her right leg had been caught in what looked like barbed wire. The pant leg was shredded, and her leg had many cuts and gashes, some of them quite deep. Angel had to control the demon's lust for the blood that flowed from the wounds.
Willow watched Angel closely. She could see him fighting for control, and she knew that there was nothing she could do.
Angel forced himself to focus on Willow's face.
"Give me your shirt."
Willow took off the flannel shirt she wore, thankful she had put a t-shirt on underneath. She watched as he gently tried to free her leg from the wire. Once that was done, he tore the shirt into strips and bandaged her leg.
"That's all I can for now. As soon as we get out of here, you'll have to get something for infection."
"Will we get out of here? Patrick controls the maze. What if he makes sure we never get out?"
Angel refused to answer right away. They were the same questions he'd asked himself. Patrick's actions didn't make sense. And it infuriated Angel that he couldn't figure out what was going on.
"Don't ask such stupid questions. Now, we've wasted enough time. From now on, watch where you're going."
Despite the cruelness of his words, Angel helped Willow stand. And supported her as they walked. Willow didn't point out that she hadn't seen the danger, because it wasn't there when she'd first stepped in that spot. But Angel knew it anyway, because the barbed wire had disappeared as soon as Willow had stood up.
Willow grimaced in pain, but kept her mouth shut. She knew Angel didn't want to hear about her injury. As they walked through the maze, Willow realized that if they were going to survive, Angel needed to concentrate on the maze. He was the only one that could get them out.
"How's the leg?"
"Fine, it doesn't hurt much at all." Willow lied.
(Good, at least I don't have to worry about her leg slowing us down.) Angel wouldn't acknowledge the relief he felt.
Willow decided that she would keep her pain to herself. (There's nothing he can do about it. Better to just try to push it to the back of my mind. Please, help us through this soon. I just want to go home.)
Angel stopped. He left Willow standing, and went ahead to check out the two paths they were faced with.
"From now on, we'll have to be even more careful. Patrick will continue to throw things at us when we least expect it."
Angel had no sooner finished, then Willow screamed.
"ANGEL!!!"
Angel instinctively ducked as he turned. A giant Cobra snake, had appeared directly behind him. He assumed a defensive stance.
"Move back." Willow obeyed without question.
Angel faced the ugly creature. (Nice, Patrick. Very nice. You get an A for imagination.) The cobra struck, but Angel dodged the strike. Willow looked around, hoping to find something to help, but there was nothing. Angel was on his own.
Willow watched helplessly as the snake and the demon fought in a battle to the death.
"Willow? Willow?"
Willow turned at the sound of her name. She saw no one. She turned her attention back to Angel, but a movement out of the corner of her eye, caught her attention. A figure had run past.
"Wait!" Willow went after the figure. (Maybe he can help Angel.)
Angel finally killed the snake. (Damn reptile.) He threw the snake into the corner of the maze. Angel wasn't surprised when it disappeared seconds later.
"Done. Now let's try this path."
Angel turned, and found himelf talking to empty space.
"Willow!"
(Damnit, where did she go?) Angel searched the area, but found no sign of Willow. His anger was now replaced by fear. (If that little weasel hurts her, he'll know what pain is!) Angel raced to find the young woman.
Meanwhile, Willow caught up to the man she'd seen. He stood with his back to her, but there was something familiar about him. Willow walked closer, and the man turned. The blood drained from Willow's face.
"No, it's not real. You can't be here!"
"Hello, Will."
Chapter 5
Willow stared at the man in front of her. He looked exactly as she remembered.
"Jesse?"
"Hey, buddy. Surprise seeing you here."
"This isn't happening. You're dead."
Willow stared at Jesse. He'd been one of her best friends since they were children, but she didn't recognize this Jesse. His eyes were cold, and sent chills down her back.
"Yeah, I died. No thanks to your new friend."
"What are you talking about?"
"Buffy. Everything was fine until she showed up. You, me, and Xander were perfectly happy, but then she came and wrecked everything. It's her fault I died. But what really hurts is that you and Xander betrayed me."
Willow watched Jesse. He was becoming angry, and she was scared to death. (Hurry, Angel. Please find me!)
"We never betrayed you."
"Oh, really? Then what would you call it. You and Xander were my best friends, but you took her side over mine. And now you're all one cozy little group."
"We didn't choose sides. You were a vampire."
"I was your friend!!!"
A part of Willow had always felt guilty about Jesse's death, and now here he was, blaming her.
"Once you were changed, you weren't the Jesse we knew anymore. You became a monster."
"Do you remember when we were kids? The three of us took a sacred oath, to be best friends forever. NO MATTER WHAT!!!"
Willow backed up until she hit a wall. (Damn!)
"We did what we had to do, Jesse."
"No, you did what she told you to do. God, you always were a little follower. Good little Willow, always doing as you're told."
Willow walked toward Jesse, ignoring the pain in her leg. His condescending tone had made her angry.
"Knock it off. You always could be a jerk!"
Jesse backed up slightly, surprised at the anger in her voice.
"The night you disappeared, we were desperate to find you. After we found out what happened, we were devastated. You had to be destroyed, you weren't the Jesse we knew and loved, he was already dead. But, we have never forgotten you. And Xander and I have kept our promise. Jesse is still our best friend, and he always will be....in our hearts!"
"Then why do you feel guilty? You sum everything up into a neat little package, but it doesn't change the fact that you blame yourself. And I say with good reason."
Willow forced herself to remember that this wasn't her friend. Jesse would never have blamed her for what happened.
"Yes, I felt guilty, because I wasn't there for you when you were taken. I always felt as though I had let you down. But I know better now. There was nothing I could do!"
"So, you let me die!"
"I don't have to explain myself to you. Whatever you are, you aren't my friend. Jesse would know how much he meant to Xander and I. He'd know that we would never forget him. So, you've failed."
Willow watched as the man disappeared. Patrick had used the guilt she felt against her. But by facing the guilt, and overcoming it, she had defeated the ghost from her past. (I'm sorry Jesse, but I realize it wasn't my fault. Goodbye.)
Willow collapsed on the ground in tears. Between the throbbing pain in her leg, mental and physical exhaustion, and the constant fear, Willow had reached the limit of her endurance.
That was the way Angel found her moments later. He ran to her side, and gently pulled her into his arms. He didn't even stop to think about what he was doing. Angel rocked Willow, and listened as she told him what had happened. (Damn you Patrick! Why can't you leave her alone? It's me you're after.)
Angel continued to hold onto Willow until she finally drifted off to sleep. He knew they should keep moving, but he couldn't wake her up. She was too close to the edge, and needed time to regroup. Angel checked her leg. He noticed that the cuts had become a bright red. (That leg must hurt like hell, but she'd never uttered a single word. She's tougher than I've ever given her credit for.)
Willow woke up alone. The nightmares that had plagued her sleep dimmed in the reality that Angel had left her.
"Angel!!!" Willow sobbed.
"Willow, I'm right here."
Willow turned to see Angel standing behind her. She ran to him, and held on as though her life depended on it. At that point, she didn't care that he would probably push her away.
But Angel didn't push her away. He held her tightly in his arms. (I still don't understand these feelings, but I'll be damned if I going to continue wasting my energy fighting them.) Angel had this woman in his arms, and it felt right. He'd worry about the repercussions later.
Angel tipped Willow's face up to him. Tears rolled down her face, but the trust he saw in her eyes, were his undoing. He leaned down and kissed her. First one cheek, then the other. Willow closed her eyes and leaned into his embrace.
"I thought you'd left." Willow whispered.
"Never."
Then he claimed her lips in a kiss that sent shivers down to her feet. She wound her arms around his neck, and returned the kiss. Neither wanted that moment to end, but the sounds of approaching danger pulled them apart.
"Can you walk?"
Willow, still dazed from the kiss, looked at him in confusion.
"You're leg. I know it hurts."
"I'll be fine."
Angel watched the emotions cross her face. She was still denying her injury. Angel swung Willow up into his arms and continued on their path.
"I can walk, you know. Besides, didn't you say you weren't going to carry me." Willow couldn't help throwing his words back at him.
"Shut up. You'd slow us down with that leg."
Willow withdrew a little, as she sensed the return of Angelus mode.
"Besides, I enjoy having you exactly where I want you." Angel continued with a smirk.
Willow smiled softly. (Who would've thought that Angelus was capable of humor. This is definately a new side.)
They hadn't gone far when another of Patrick's 'obstacles' appeared. Willow watched as Angelus fought the monster. (How much more do we have to go through? When will Patrick be satisfied? How much longer can I keep going?)
Angel returned to Willow, and pulled her to him. He, too, was getting sick of this game. <It's got to end soon. They stood silently. Both praying for a moment's peace before they'd have to continue.
Chapter6
"Isn't that sweet? Trying the old seduction routine, Angelus?"
Angel and Willow seperated, and turned to face the new danger. Willow wasn't sure how much more she could handle.
"Aren't you happy to see me?"
Willow watched her former teacher approach them. (I have to remember, she's not the real Jenny. Don't listen to anything she says.)
"Well, it would appear I've stunned both of you silent."
"What are you doing here? What's the point?" Angel asked.
"That hurts, Angel. I tried to help you, and how do you repay me? You killed me, then layed me out for Rupert to find. Now you've set your sites on Willow, but I won't allow you to hurt her."
(What is Patrick up to now? Bringing the gypsy here has to be significant.)
"Willow, you must come with me now. I can get you home, but you must trust me." Jenny reached her hand toward Willow.
Willow backed up. She looked from Angel to her computer teacher. It didn't take her long to figure out what was going on. (If I leave with this woman, then Angel dies, because he'd be left to finish the maze alone. And I don't believe for one minute that I'd be allowed to go free.)
Angel watched Willow intently. He'd also figured out Patrick's plan.....divide and conquer. (I won't interfere. Willow has to make this decision herself.)
The decision was made when Willow moved next to Angel and gripped his hand.
"I think I'll stay with Angel."
"Willow, you don't know what you're saying. He's a killer, or have you forgotten the people he's killed. Have you forgotten me?"
"I haven't forgotten anything. But have you ever considered that you and your people are partly to blame for this?"
"What are you talking about?" Jenny inquired.
"Think about it. Your people wanted to make Angel pay for killing the girl, so you gave him back his soul. That meant he would be tormented by what he'd done. But, you couldn't leave well enough alone. You added that stupid stipulation to the curse."
"We couldn't allow him happiness!"
"Oh, heavens no, you couldn't have that. So, instead you allowed Angelus to return. That makes a hell of a lot of sense to me!"
"You don't understand gypsy vengeance."
"Obviously not. I would think allowing a repenitent Angel some happiness would be a heck of lot better then letting him turn back into the killer you were punishing."
"He needed to suffer for what he had done!"
"Which is what he was doing when he had his soul. Even after finding some happiness with Buffy, he was still suffering. Taking away his soul only released him from that suffering."
The three people were silent. Angel was impressed with Willow's insight into the curse. Jenny was stunned.
"You have to take some responsibility for Angelus' actions. His return could've been prevented if you had been honest with us about who you were."
"I couldn't. I had to keep my identity a secret."
"Why? What good did it do you?"
"I tried to make it up to all of you, but he killed me."
"Kind of like the scientist being destroyed by their own creation."
Angel wasn't sure he appreciated the comparison she was drawing, but he kept quiet. Willow was managing this fine on her own.
"If you stay with him, you'll die."
"If I go with you, he dies. And I think I would die too. Isn't that right?"
"Don't say I didn't warn you."
Jenny disappeared as quickly as she had arrived. It felt good to finally say the words that had haunted her since Angelus' return. There had always been a part of her that blamed Jenny for what happened to Angel, but she knew she could never voice that opinion. Especially in front of Giles.
"You handled that well. Did you mean what you said?"
"Every word of it. No offense, but you would never have returned if they had just left the curse alone."
"Then I guess I should've thanked her for the gypsies stupidity."
Willow didn't respond. She wasn't about to get into that argument with Angel. It was then that she noticed that the maze had changed again. But this time she saw something new.
"Angel, look!"
Angel looked in the direction she pointed. It looked to be a clearing at the end of the path. (Could it be we've found the end of this maze?)
"Alright, this might be it. But don't get your hopes up. Patrick may be playing games again."
Together they headed toward the clearing. (So far, so good. This might finally be over.)
Angel stopped at the edge of the maze.
"Why'd you stop?" Willow asked from behind him.
"Just checking for unexpected company. It looks clear, but stay close."
"Not a problem." Willow whispered softly.
Angel smirked at her response. He stepped into the clearing, and felt himself being shoved forward.
"What the.....?"
The question died in his throat as he turned.
"Congratulations, my friend. I see you've made it through. I'm impressed."
Patrick stood in the clearing, his hand gripped around Willow's neck.
"Brings back memories, doesn't it, Angelus? Except our roles are reversed."
Angel stepped forward.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you. My hand might get twitchy."
Angel stopped. (There has to be some way to get her away from him. Keep him talking.)
"This was your intention the whole time, wasn't it? You never intended for us to go home. So, then why bother with the maze?"
"I had to give you time to fall in love with her."
"You're crazy if you think she means anything to me. I got her through the maze because you made the rule."
Angel watched Willow's face, stained with tears. (I have to convince him that she means nothing to me.)
"Nice try, Angelus. But I've been watching you. I know you care about her."
"Then you don't me too well. You want to kill her, go ahead. But what is it going to accomplish?"
"Justice. You took away the only person I ever loved! Now, you can deny it all you want. That just proves to me that you have fallen in love with her. You're doing whatever is necessary to try to save her, but it won't work. First, I will snap her neck, and then I will destroy you!"
"Please, don't do this." Willow pleaded.
"Nothing personal. Your death will be quick. But I have to do this for my Caitlyn."
"Do you really think this would be what she would've wanted? To see you do the same thing that Angelus did." Willow tried to reason with him.
"Shut up! You don't know anything about this. It's not the same."
"You're right, Patrick. It's not the same.....it's worse."
Patrick whipped around, dragging Willow with him. Angel approached carefully, looking for an opening. But the site that greeted him, stopped everyone in their tracks.
"Caitlyn?"
Chapter 7
"Caitlyn? Is it really you?"
The woman walked forward. Her gaze swept the faces of the startled people in front of her.
"It's me, Patrick."
Patrick started toward the woman, but stopped.
"No, it can't be. This is a trick."
He turned toward Angel, his hand still around Willow's neck.
"This is some trick of yours, Angelus."
"Don't be stupid, Patrick. I don't have that kind of power, or magic. You know that."
"He's got nothing to do with this."
Patrick turned back to the woman. Angel used the opportunity to move forward.
"Stay back, Angelus. Let me handle this. All you'll accomplish is getting her killed."
Angel stared at the woman. Memories of the day he'd killed her became more vivid. There was something in her eyes that told him to do as she said. He looked again at Patrick, then to Willow. Patrick's grip was as strong as before, and Angel knew he'd be able to snap Willow's neck in an instant. Angel stopped to the side of Patrick, so that he would be able to see Willow.
"Let the girl go, Patrick."
"I can't. Angelus must pay for what he did to you. He's a monster and must be destroyed."
"Who will make you pay?" Caitlyn asked.
"What are you talking about?"
"You are convinced that Angelus must be punished for killing me, but who will punish you for killing this girl?"
"It's not the same thing!"
"And I said it's worse."
"You're not making sense. How is it that you're here?"
"Which do you want me to explain first? How I was sent here to try to stop you from making a mistake you'll regret for eternity, or how what you are doing is much worse then what Angelus did to me?"
Patrick watched Caitlyn closely. (She's really here. My God, she's as beautiful as I remember.)
"What Angelus did to me was wrong, and he will be punished for what he's done. But not by you.....you are not his judge, jury, or executioner."
"It's my right! He destroyed everything I held sacred!"
"Wrong, Patrick. You allowed yourself to be driven by vengeance, you alone are responsible for the lose of your honor and your soul. Now you want to kill an innocent girl. You have planned out every detail of how she will die. You have become as much of a monster as Angelus....maybe even more so."
"I loved you! When you died, I wanted to die too."
"That's what was supposed to happen. You were to die that day. We would have had eternal life together, but you threw that away when you sold your soul."
"What are you saying?"
"You didn't lose me when I died.....you lost me when you lived. You've forfeited your place with me, your eternity lies elsewhere now."
Patrick stood silently. (How can she say this to me?)
"Everything I've done has been for you."
"No, I was just the excuse you used. You have always had a vendetta against Angelus, even before that night. Jealousy, anger, hatred,....those are the reasons for what you've done. Don't make it worse by killing an innocent. Someone who wasn't even born when this feud began. Let it end, Patrick."
"No!! I've waited too long for this moment. The time has come for me to take my vengeance!!"
Angel saw that Patrick wasn't in his right mind.
"Willow!!"
At the instant when Patrick would've killed Willow, Caitlyn used her magic to send Patrick flying backwards. Angel rushed to Willow's side.
"Are you alright?"
Willow couldn't reply. She just held onto Angel. He swung her up in his arms, then turned to the others.
"Take her and go. Walk north, and you will arrive at the same spot where Patrick took you from."
"Why are you doing this?" Angel asked.
"She didn't deserve to be dragged into your mess. If it had been just you and Patrick, I wouldn't have interfered. But I couldn't sit back and let her die. Whether you want to admit it or not, you have changed Angelus. Hold onto that, she could be the one thing that could save you."
Willow looked at the young woman. (She appears so calm, but I know that having to go against the man she loved, is hurting her.)
"Thank you, Caitlyn."
"You're welcome Willow. The path you have chosen won't be easy, but your destinies have now been linked. Now go."
Willow watched as Caitlyn walked toward Patrick. Then in a blinding light, both of them disappeared.
"What'll happen to them?"
"I don't know, and I really don't care. The sooner you forget about Patrick the better."
Willow knew by the tone of his voice, that Angel wasn't in the proper mood for a discussion. She leaned her head on his shoulder, and was soon asleep.
Angel knew the instant Willow drifted off. He had come so close to losing her. (Patrick's gone. His spell should've died with him. Why do I still care about her?)
After several moments, they reached the park. It looked the same, as though nothing had happened. Willow was still asleep, and Angel didn't want to wake her, but he knew he couldn't just drop her at her home, she needed medical attention for her leg. (Shit, I have no choice but to take her to the library. Perfect way to end this....with a visit to the Slayer and her little friends.)
Buffy was the first to hear Angel enter. Her gaze flew to Willow.
"Willow?"
Giles and Xander came running, and the site that greeted them chilled both to the bone. They were sure that Willow was dead.
"Don't worry, Slayer. She's just asleep."
Angel laid Willow on a table and turned to leave.
"Angel?"
"What?"
"Where's Patrick?" Buffy asked.
"Gone. She's got an injured leg that needs attention."
Without a backward glance, Angel left the library. (Now it's over. Patrick's spell will weaken, and I'll be free of these feelings.) Angel decided it was time for dinner.
Back at the library, Willow had come around.
"Angel?"
"It's okay, Will. You're safe, and we're going to get you to the hospital."
Willow looked up to see Buffy and Xander hovering over her. She sat up and looked around the library. No Angel. (So much for never leaving me. I guess things have gone back to the way there were. Except for one little thing......I've fallen in love with Angelus.)
Buffy and Xander watched helplessly as their friend broke down in tears. They thought the stress of what she had been through was the reason. Willow wasn't about to let them know the real reason.
Giles carried Willow into her house. Her leg had been treated and the doctor said what she needed was sleep.
"Do you want me to stay with you?" Buffy asked.
"No, I need to be alone. Please?"
"Okay, but call if you need us."
Buffy, Giles, and Xander reluctantly left Willow alone. They were worried about her. She had barely spoken since she got back, but they would respect her wishes. Maybe she'd be better after a good night's sleep.
Willow watched her friends leave. She knew they were all concerned, but she didn't want them hovering around her. (What I need is Angel.) Willow turned out the light, and fell into a fitfull sleep. She was never aware of the figure watching her from the window.
(Sleep well....you deserve it.)
Then Angel turned and left.
Chapter 8
Willow stood, fidgeting nervously. She was scared to death, but she knew what she had to do. Slowly, she lifted her hand to knock on the door.
"What do you want?" Angel asked when he opened the door.
Willow fought the urge to turn and run. Angel looked gorgeous as he stood at the door, wearing nothing but jeans. But the look on his face terrified her. (Just remember the man in the maze....the man I fell in love with.)
"May I come in?"
Angel said nothing, but he backed up to let her enter. Willow was encouraged by this. (At least he didn't slam the door in my face.)
"Well?"
"Well, what?"
"I've had enough of games, Willow. What the hell are you doing here?"
"I haven't seen you since you left me at the library."
"So?"
"I want to know why." Willow said.
Angel sat down on the couch and streched out his legs.
"I would think that'd be obvious, even to you."
"It isn't obvious to me. After what happened in the maze....." Willow began.
"Nothing happened in the maze. I got you through because I had no choice. Patrick's dead, and now things will go back to the way they were."
"But we care about each other."
Willow was stopped by Angelus' laughter.
"Oh, God, you are so naive. I don't give a damn about you. Why would I?"
"But the way you acted in the maze?"
"You just answered your own question. I was acting. Don't you think I realized what Patrick was up to? I had to convince him that his plan had worked so he would show himself."
"What do you mean?"
"Wake up! Patrick wanted to do to me what I had done to him. In order to do that, he needed me to fall in love with you. So I let him believe that I had. My only regret is that I didn't get to him before Caitlyn. It would've been very rewarding to finish what I had started."
Willow watched Angel, tears building in her eyes. (He's lying. He has to be.)
"What are you looking at?"
"What if Patrick had killed me?"
"Then I still would've killed him, but Caitlyn stepped in because of you, and robbed me of that honor."
"I meant, would it have mattered to you?"
Angel walked over to Willow. She looked up and immediately drew back. The smirk on Angel's face gave her the answer before his words did.
"Not in the least."
Willow fled the apartment in tears, vaguely she heard the door slam behind her. Willow had no idea where she was going. (It was all a lie. I let myself believe that he cared about me.)
Willow kept running, eventually she wound up at the park. She sat down on the bench, and let the tears fall freely. (What a fool I was.)
"Willow?"
Willow looked up to find Buffy watching her.
"What's the matter? You shouldn't be out here alone."
Willow couldn't bring herself to Buffy the truth. She knew Buffy's first response would be to find Angel and stake him. And even though he had hurt her, she didn't want him dead.
"I just needed some air. Time to think."
"This isn't the safest place to be at night. You know that as well as I do. Let me walk you home."
"Okay."
Willow walked silently beside Buffy. She knew Buffy was concerned, but she couldn't handle talking to her friend now. The only thing Willow wanted to do was cry in peace.
When they got to Willow's house, Willow thanked her friend.
"Are you sure you're okay, Will."
"I'm fine. I just need to sort some things out for myself."
"Okay, I'll talk to you tomorrow."
"Bye, Buffy."
Willow went in and got ready for bed. She turned on the radio, and began crying again, as Colin Raye's song 'I Can Still Feel You' began playing:
It's that feeling, that someone is standing behind me,
And I turn around, and there's no one there.
And it's the sensation that someone just whispered
I still hear you're voice but you're not really here.
You're memory's like a ghost,
And my heart is it's host
I can still feel you just as close as skin every now and then,
All by myself in a crowded room or my empty bed
There's a place you've touched with your love
That no one gets close to
I can still feel you...I can still feel you...I can still feel you
Willow got up and shut off the radio. The song only served to depress her more. Willow climbed into bed, thoughts of Angel dominated her mind. (He never loved me. He's certainly a good actor, I was totally convinced. But, what do I do now?)
Before Willow fell asleep, Caitlyn's words replayed in her mind. (You're destinies are linked.....The path you've chosen won't be easy.) Willow was convinced that meant she and Angel were supposed to be together. With a renewed determination, Willow decided she would fight for the man she loved. Whether he liked it or not.
Chapter 9
Angel watched Willow's house from the shadows. He had followed her after she left his apartment to make sure she got home safely. He had thought he'd feel better after telling her off, sure that Patrick's damn spell would've worn off. But, the look on Willow's face when she'd run out, had ripped at the heart he swore he didn't have. (Why can't I just walk away?)
"Because you love her, Angelus."
Angel turned to find Caitlyn standing behind him. She appeared the same as she had at the maze.
"What?"
"You can't walk away because you love her."
"How the hell do you know what I was thinking?"
"I know everything about you."
"Obviously not everything, because you're wrong. This is all Patrick's fault. Him and his magic."
"What you're feeling has nothing to do with Patrick. His power ended when I took him, thus ending any spells he cast. It may have started because of him, but you fell in love with her on your own."
Angel turned back to the dark house. He refused to think about the young woman lying inside, who was hurting because of the things he'd said.
"The question now is what are you going to do about it?"
"Nothing."
Caitlyn walked to Angelus. She touched his shoulder, and turned him toward her.
"Do you remember what I told you?"
"About what?"
"I told you that she might be your only hope."
"Hope for what?"
"Forgiveness."
"What makes you think I want forgiveness?"
"Because you've changed, Angelus. The time you had your soul has changed you, even though you don't want to admit it."
"My soul is gone."
"But not your feelings. Some part of you has allowed you to have feelings for that girl. Sooner or later, you will have to face the truth. If you don't, you'll face a future more bleak then the one you've been living."
"I like the way I live."
"Do you? Can you go back to living that way, now that you know what it's like to have someone give a damn about you?"
"I did it before."
"That was different. The Slayer didn't love you, she loved Angel. So you took great pleasure in using that against her. But this time, you're hurting someone who loves you....Angelus. Think about that."
Caitlyn disappeared as silently as she had arrived. Angel was left with his own thoughts. He didn't want to think about the things Caitlyn had said. They had hit too close to home. (How the hell could it work? She's the Slayer's friend, and I am her enemy.)
Angel started to walk away, but stopped after a few steps. He was at war with himself. Part of him told him to forget about Willow, and go back to the life he'd had before Patrick interfered; but, the other part told him to go to Willow and not let anything take her away from him. (What the hell am I supposed to do?)
(Go to her, Angelus. Don't make the same mistakes I made.)
"Patrick?"
(I let my hatred blind me, now I've lost Caitlyn for eternity. The only thing that matters is love. You can face the consequences together, but you'll regret it if you let her go.)
Angel stood, listening, but Patrick said nothing more. He was right though. To hell with everything else. Angel walked to Willow's doors, and knocked.
He waited patiently, then the door opened. Willow looked at him in shock, fear and hope mingled in her eyes.
"Angel?"
"I need to talk to you."
Angel watched Willow try to decide what to think.
"Please."
Willow's eyes widened. She'd never heard him say that word. (Hell, I don't remember the last time I said please.)
"Come in."
Willow went in and sat at the end of her bed. She thought she must be dreaming.
"I want to apologize."
"For what?" Willow asked suspiciously.
"For lying to you."
"What did you lie about?"
Angel walked over to her, and kneeled. He took her shaking hands into his own.
"My feelings for you. Everything I told you at my place was a lie. But, I wasn't only lying to you, I lied to myself too. I tried so hard to convince myself that I didn't give a damn about you."
"What changed your mind?"
"Caitlyn.....and Patrick."
Willow looked at Angel in confusion. He explained about Caitlyn's visit, and Patrick's words.
"I don't know how this is going to work. Besides the obvious, we are totally different. But, I'm tired of trying to figure out why I have these feelings, and sick of trying to forget them. Whatever it takes, I want you in my life."
Tears fell down Willow's cheek, and she threw herself into Angel's arms. He held tightly, never wanting to let her go.
"I love you, Angel."
"I lo...."
"It's okay, you don't have to say it. I can see it in your eyes."
But Angel knew he had to say the words. Not just for her, but for himself.
"I love you, Willow."
Willow's smile made the effort worth it. He leaned in and kissed her passionately. Whatever doubts he had faded. This felt right to both of them.
Later, Angel got up to leave. They had fallen asleep in each other's arms. The first peaceful sleep either had enjoyed since the whole mess began.
"Angel, where are you going?"
Angel sat down next to her on the bed. He pushed a strand of hair behind her ear.
"It's nearly sunrise. I better get home."
"Will I see you tonight?"
Angel was silent.
"Angel?"
"Are you sure about this? Buffy and the others aren't going to exactly jump up and down about this. There are going to be alot of problems."
Willow grabbed his hand, and held it tightly.
"I know that. And I realize that we have a lot to talk about, and decisions that need to be made. But, I love you, and I won't let you go just because things are going to get tough."
"Okay, but if you change your mind...."
"I won't. I had already decided to fight for you even before you came here last night."
"You did?"
Willow nodded. Angel kissed her and walked to the door.
"I'll see you tonight." Then he was gone.
Willow got up and looked out the door. There was no sign of him. She walked back to bed. (I better get some sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a long day....and night.)
Willow knew that she and Angel would have to make some compromises, and some of them were going to be difficult. She also knew that Buffy, Xander, and Giles wouldn't understand her relationship with Angel. (But will they accept my decision?)
Tomorrow would be a turning point in Willow's life. But she'd made her choice, and she would stick by it. No matter what the outcome.
Chapter 10
Willow walked into the library, feeling less then confident. She knew she had to face her friends alone.
"Hey, Willow. Good seeing you up and about."
"Hi Buffy. Where are Xander and Giles?"
"Back in the stacks someplace."
"I really need to talk to you guys."
"Sounds serious."
Buffy didn't like the look on Willow's face. Something major had happened.
"It is."
Buffy went to get the others. Willow leaned against the table, trying to calm her nerves.
"What's up, Will?"
Willow turned to her best friend.
"Somethings happened, and I need to be the one to tell you guys. And I know you aren't to going to like it, but my mind's made up, and nothing you say or do will change it. I don't expect you to approve, but I hope you can accept my decision."
The others had become nervous. They knew that whatever Willow had to say was going to be bad.
"So, tell us."
"I'm in love with Angelus, and we want to be together."
"WHAT!!!! Have you lost your mind?" Xander exploded.
"Willow, you can't be serious. He's a monster." Buffy tried to reach out to Willow.
"No, he's not. Things changed in the maze.....he's changed."
"Willow, it was Patrick's spell. He told us about it when he came here."
"You're wrong. It started because of that, but Patrick's spell ended when he died. Angel loves me."
"You're kidding yourself. He doesn't care about anyone. Don't you see, he's using you."
"No he's not. I know that there are going to be things that we need to face and deal with. But, we are going to do it together. He's willing to compromise, and so am I."
"Willow...."
"Don't say it, Xander. I told you, I'm not here to get your approval."
"Then why are you here? You seem to have already made up your mind." Giles asked.
"To explain it to you. You're my friends, and I want you to stay my friends. But, I need to know that you'll accept my decision. And that you will leave Angel alone." The last part directed at Buffy.
"Look, we're grateful that Angelus saved your life, but we can't forget the things he's done. And we can't trust him not to continue where he left off. I'm sorry Willow."
Willow fought the tears. She knew this was it. Caitlyn had said it wouldn't be easy, and she was right.
"Then I guess there's nothing left to say." Willow turned to leave.
"Wait! You mean you're picking dead boy over us?" Xander asked.
Willow refused to turn around. It would be harder that way.
"I didn't want to choose." And with that Willow walked out of the library, and out of their lives.
"We have to go after her."
"No, give her time, Xander. She'll realize that she's confusing gratitude with love. In the meantime, we'll keep an eye on her, and make sure Angelus doesn't hurt her."
Xander looked towards the door. He had the sudden urge to run after Willow, and say he'd try to accept her decision. But, he did as Buffy asked.
Willow went to her house and packed a few belongings. She left a note for her parents, saying she had left with the man she loved, and that she would be in touch. Then she wrote a note for her friends, and dropped it in the mailbox on her way to Angel's.
"Are you sure about this?"
Willow went over to sit on Angel's lap. She had told him of her plan for them to leave town together.
"I'm sure. You know as well as I do that they won't accept this. And I don't want to live in constant fear that some night you won't come home. Please, let's just leave."
Angel held onto the girl in his arms. They had made many important decisions since she'd come to his home. She knew that he wasn't willing to go back to eating blood out of bags, but he knew how she felt about him killing innocent people. So they had compromised. Then they had talked over the other matters, and found a way to compromise on those also. This was the final point that needed closure.
"Willow, do you realize you'd be leaving behind everything and everyone you love?"
"Not everyone."
"You know what I mean. And you know that even though we've come a long way in making choices, this won't be easy. I'm not exactly the easiest man to be around."
"I know all that. And I know it won't be easy, but we belong together. Caitlyn told us that. We're going to have problems, and arguments, but we'll face them together."
"And what if I try to hurt you?"
"You won't. I love you, and I trust you with my life."
Angel pulled Willow into a kiss. Whatever the reason, he was willing to do for this woman, things he'd never do for anyone else. He agreed that if they were to have a future together, they would have to leave the past behind.
"Ok, we'll leave."
"Tonight?"
The hopeful expression on Willow's face did him in. With a final kiss, he lifted her off his lap. It only took him moments to pack his few belongings. They got on his bike, and headed out of town.
At the edge of Sunnydale, they stopped.
"Last chance."
Willow turned back to take a final look. It was harder then she thought it would be, but she was determined to start a new life with Angel. (Maybe some day I'll be able to come back.)
"Let's go." Willow said as she tightened her hold on Angel.
He squeezed her hands, then put the bike in gear. Both were leaving a part of themselves behind.
"She's gone!"
Xander came running into the library the following Monday.
"What?"
Xander passed the note to Buffy to read.
Xander
By the time you get this, Angel and I will be gone.
I couldn't stay, knowing how you guys feel about him.
I would be constantly worried that Buffy would kill him.
But, I want you to know that I'm not mad at you. You'll always be my best friend.
I hope to someday see you again. My future is with Angel, though.
Tell Buffy and Giles that I love them too. Please don't worry about me.
Whether you believe it or not, Angel does love me, and will protect me.
I won't say goodbye, so I'll say till later.
All my love, Willow.
"God, what has she done? We have to find her."
"No, Buffy."
Buffy stared at Xander in shock.
"What?"
"We have to let her go. This is what she wants."
"But Angel....."
"I've known Willow my entire life. I trust her instincts. She'll be fine with him."
"I don't believe you're saying this."
"I'm no fan of Angel's, never have been. But, if she believes he's changed, I'll take her word for it. The last thing she asked me for was to accept her decision....and that's what I'm going to do."
With that declaration, Xander left the room.
"He's right, Buffy. This is one time you have to step back and let Willow handle this alone."
"Giles, she's making a mistake."
"Then it's her mistake to make. If you don't let go, you'll lose her for good."
Several days later, Buffy received the call she had been praying for.
"Willow, where are you?"
"I can't tell you that. Just know that I'm fine."
"Are you happy?"
"Yes. I'm not going to say that we haven't had problems, because we have. But, we are working through the difficult times, and things are getting better."
"Isn't there anything I can say to change your mind?"
"Nothing. Look, I've already called Xander and my parents. I just wanted to let you know that I'm happy and healthy. This was the right move for me. Please understand that."
"I think I finally do. Will we ever see you again?"
"Maybe....in time, but not right now. Always remember that I love you guys."
"We love you too."
"Bye."
Buffy hung up the phone. (Bye Willow. Take care of yourself.)
"Are you okay?"
Willow walked into Angel's arms. "I'm fine."
They got back on the bike, and headed for an unknown destination.....and an unknown future.
THE END!!
