Slipping Away
By: Arlene Barbin
"Here comes just another day
That's drifting away
Everytime I draw a breath
It's dying away
First the sun and then the moon
one of them will be around soon
Slipping Away."
Willow opened her eyes and looked up at Angelus' sleeping face. She laid her head back down on
his chest and thought about her new life. A few hours ago she had been a normal girl, well as normal
as she could be considering she lived on a Hellmouth. She belonged to Angelus' world now, she was a
vampire. "Willow." She looked up at Angelus. "Why are you awake? You need your rest." He laid
her head down on his chest and began stroking her hair. Willow slowly drifted to sleep.
Buffy lay curled up in a ball on the library floor weeping quietly. Giles lowered the phone and walked
over to Buffy. "Xander and Cordelia will be here soon. Buffy, do you hear me?" She raised her tear
strained face to him. "What are we going to do?" Giles awkwardly cradled Buffy to his chest
whispering words of comfort to the grief stricken slayer. Xander burst through the library doors with
Cordelia following close behind. He saw Buffy crying in Giles' arms. "What happened? What's wrong?"
Buffy rose to her feet and opened her arms to Xander. "Buffy, tell me what happened." Buffy wrapped
her arms around him. "Willow...Angel got to her."
"Is she hurt?" Buffy looked into his eyes. "Is she...dead?"
"Xander, Willow is a vampire."
"No! You're lying!" He pushed Buffy away from him. "Xander, it's.."
"SHUT UP! I don't believe you." He began pacing across the room. "This is not happening. THIS IS
NOT HAPPENING!"
"Stop it Xander." Xander halted his movement and looked over at Giles. "No one is to blame. I
know you're upset but you have to calm down. We must deal with this."
"You don't understand, she's my best friend. I love her." Xander turned and ran out of the library.
Giles watched as the door slammed back into place. He turned to the girls. "Cordelia, please take
Buffy home. I will call you soon." Buffy slowly walked toward the door but stopped and turned toward
Giles. "Giles..."
"Go home Buffy." She quietly left the library with Cordelia. Giles picked up Buffy's bag and placed it
on the table. "Willow, I'm so sorry."
The pleasant feeling of someone's lips against her own woke Willow from her sleep. She eagerly
returned Angelus' kiss. They slowly broke apart. "Hello, did you sleep well?" She smiled up at
Angelus. "Yes, thank you." She rose from the bed and Angelus admired the way Dru's dress looked
on Willow's slender body. "I'll be right back." Willow watched as Angelus walked out of the bedroom.
He quickly returned with two glasses of red liquid. "I thought you might be hungry." Willow brought the
glass to her lips and swallow the liquid. She wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth. "I want to
look around."
"Just be careful around the garden."
"I know, don't worry."
She kissed him and began wandering around the old house. She stood in the darken banquet room. A
noise behind her interrupted her thoughts. "Hello, Spike." She turned and watched as Spike walked
towards her. "Hello, luv. What do you think of our little family so far?"
"Is keeping secrets a family rule?"
"What?...Oh yes, it's a little surprise for Dru and our boy Angel. Promise you'll keep my secret."
"Okay Spike. I have to go Angel will be worried."
"We mustn't have that." Spike watched as Willow walked away, her hair swinging across her
shoulders.
Xander lay in bed watching as the sunlight drifted away. He knew that Willow would be out with
Angelus. The phone rang and he picked it up. "Hello Buffy. Yes I won't go out tonight. I understand,
okay bye." Xander replaced the phone on its cradle and pulled out two stakes. He had no intention of
staying in the house. He wanted Angelus dead and it was happening tonight. He made his way out
into the night in search of his target.
Dru sang happily as she brushed Willow's hair. "We're going to play tonight, aren't we Spike."
"Yes, pet but first I have a surprise." He rose from his chair and walked over to Dru. "Spike you're all
better."
"Right as rain, ducks." Angelus looked on in shock. "Well I'll be damn." Spike tossed him smirk.
"Yes, you are."
"Spike's all healed. Isn't that wonderful my Angel." Angelus walked over to Willow and rested his
hand on her shoulder. "Yeah, it's great Dru. I'm glad for you Spike." Spike looked over at him and
realized he was sincere. "Thanks mate. Now don't we have a slayer to destroy." The new family
stepped out into the night.
Buffy slammed her weapon's bag on the library table. A few stubborn tears slid down her cheek.
Giles watched as she loaded the bag with weapons. "He's going to pay for what he did."
"Buffy.."
"No, Giles I've waited to long already. Nothing's going to change and while I wait hoping, Ms.
Calendar and now Willow pay for my mistake. It ends tonight."
Willow and Angelus went off alone to find their meal. A young couple was out taking a romantic
stroll in the park. Angelus smiled at Willow and they quietly crept up on the unsuspecting couple.
Willow held the young man in her arms. She could hear his heart beat faster and his blood pumping.
Her demon face slipped on and she lowered her fangs to his neck. His blood rushed into her mouth
filling the hunger the gnawed at her gut. His lifeless body fell onto the ground next to his girlfriend.
Angelus swept Willow up into his embrace and kissed her hard. They satisfied their hunger by
claiming a few more victims before meeting up with Spike and Dru.
Giles watched as Buffy took out her anger and frustration at the recent events on two vampires who
had wandered onto Buffy's path. She quickly staked them and turned to Giles. "Let's go."
Spike wrapped his arms around Dru and walked toward the park. "Spike, the sky is singing. Can you
hear it? It's singing for you."
"Yes pet, thank you but Angel and Willow are waiting."
"Yes my new playmate."
They walked into the park and found Willow and Angelus sitting on a bench. "Spike, how does it feel to
be out again?"
"Bloody marvelous mate."
Willow's eyes scanned the park, she knew someone was watching them. Her eyes fell to a custer of
trees and spotted the intruder. Xander sank farther behind the trees and hoped Willow hadn't spotted
him. A hand shot behind the tree and grabbed him around the neck. Willow quickly pulled him toward
the clearing." "Looks like you caught a bite, luv." Dru giggled at Spike's statement. "He looks very
sweet. Won't you share Willow?" Angelus looked over at Dru. "No, Dru this one is all for Willow. You
were a fool to come here Xander." Xander watched as Willow's face changed and she lowered her fangs
toward his exposed neck. "Willow don't." He fumbled in his pocket and gripped the cross that lay
there. Angelus, Spike, and Dru watched as Willow pierced the skin at Xander's neck.
A crossbow dart flew through the air aimed at Druscilla. Spike turned and quickly shielded Dru. The
dart embedded itself deeply in Spike's left shoulder. He dropped to his knees trying to pull the offensive
object out. "SPIKE! Are you all right?"
"Yes pet just help me up." She grabbed him under the arm and lifted him to his feet. "Come on pet,
let's leave Angelus to his little party." Dru dragged Spike off toward their home.
Buffy and Giles ran toward Xander. "Xander!" Buffy's voice broke through Xander's haze and he press
the cross into the side of Willow's face. She screamed and dropped Xander to the ground. She could
smell the left side of her face burning. A tear slid down her cheek. "That hurt." She fell back into
Angelus' arms. He scooped her up. "Some other time lover." Angelus carried Willow off into the night.
Buffy fell to her knees beside Xander. "I'm so sorry Xander. Please forgive me."
"It's alright Buffy. I'll be alright." Giles lifted the boy to his feet and walked him to the car. Buffy
picked up the cross Xander dropped. She noticed that the necklace she given Willow on her last
birthday lay on the ground beside the cross. She slipped the necklace into the palm of her hand and
closed her fingers tightly over it. "I'm sorry Willow. I'm sorry I wasn't there to protect you." Buffy
prayed that she would find the strength to end it.
Angelus slipped inside the mansion. "SPIKE! DRU!" He walked toward his bedroom and carefully
laid Willow on the bed. "Angel, it hurts."
"I know, it will heal soon just rest." He pulled the covers over Willow and quietly walked out of the
room. "Dru, Spike where are you?" Druscilla appeared in the doorway of her bedroom. She placed her
finger up against her lips. "Sh sh Angel, Spike is resting." He pulled her into the hall. "The slayer has
to pay for what she's done. We have to make her suffer."
"Yes my Angel tonight the slayer dies."
Willow calling his name halted his conversation. He joined Willow in his bedroom. "Willow, what is it?"
"Angel, I want to leave Sunnydale. Can we leave please?" He sat down next to her and stroked her
hair. "Why do you want to leave?"
"Because Buffy won't stop until she has destroyed us all. I want a life with you." He lifted her head
to his and kissed her. "You will." He walked toward the door. "Where are you going?"
"I won't be long. Get some rest Willow." He waited as Dru kissed Spike's forehead and whispered
goodbye. Spike slept soundly and never heard them leave.
Xander sat at the library table as Giles applied a bandage to his neck. "I didn't think she would. I
don't understand this." Buffy laid her hand on his shoulder. "I know Xander but it's not Willow
anymore." The library doors crashed open. "Time's up lover." Giles ran and grabbed the crossbow.
Druscilla appeared before him and knocked the crossbow from his hands. She raised her hand and
swiped a large gash across his cheek with her nails. Xander ran toward Druscilla attempting to turn her
attention away from Giles. She turned grabbed Xander by the throat and threw him against a nearby
wall. He slid down the wall and lay in a heap on the floor. Giles reached out for the fallen crossbow.
"Naughty Naughty." Her fist cracked against Giles' jaw.
Buffy extended her leg sending her foot connecting to the side of Angelus' head. He shook the hit off.
"One point for you, now it's mine turn." He punched her sending her to floor. She quickly got up and
stood before him. Angelus charged her and she flipped him over her. He landed on his back and
crawled to his feet. Angelus doubled over from a kick to his gut. "That's for Willow and this is for me."
She punched him repeatly in the face.
Xander opened his eyes and surveyed the scene. He cheered silently as Buffy punched Angelus. He
turned and saw Giles desperately trying to hold Druscilla off. Xander crawled over slowly to Giles and
Druscilla. He got to his feet and stood behind Druscilla. He plunged the stake in her back. She
screeched and exploded into a cloud of dust. Angelus grabbed Buffy's foot and sent her crashing to the
ground. He turned and watched as Druscilla died. "Damn you slayer." He realized he didn't have much
time before the sun would be up. Buffy began climbing to her feet. Angelus delivered a kick that
returned her to the floor in a curled up position. He ran off into the night.
He got to the mansion and ran into his bedroom. He gently lifted a sleeping Willow in his arms.
"Angel?"
"Yes, go back to sleep."
She buried her head into his chest and drifted back to sleep. Angelus placed her in the front seat of
Spike's car. He ran back and got Spike from his bed. He lowered Spike into the backseat and slipped
behind the wheel. He watched as the fire he set consumed their home. He drove off as the sun's ray
began to fill the sky with his new love and an old friend.
