Pokey Minch is Ness' overweight neighbour and "friend" (when it suits him). His family was very
rich until Ness' father started borrowing money from them. Pokey's something of a pig,
and likes nothing more than his dessert. He's also a coward (using Ness as a shield?), running
from direct confrontation... well, waddling. His younger brother Picky seems to be the more
responsible and smart of the two. Pokey doesn't care about anything except his own hide - if
his father wouldn't get mad at him, he wouldn't have gone looking for Picky. Still, Ness has
a glimmer of hope for their friendship, even though he is secretly jealous of his neighbour.
When the meteorite crashes, Pokey is on the scene trying to get through the roadblocks to see it
and generally bothering the police. Later that night he comes knocking on your door, asking for
help. He took Picky to see the meteorite, but Picky got lost (through no fault of Pokey's,
apparently) and he wants Ness' help in finding his little brother. It turns out that Picky is
only sleeping up on the hill under a tree. It's during this trip that the boys encounter
Buzz Buzz, and learn of the prophecy.
Upon returning home, Pokey is soundly spanked by his father and grounded with no desserts. After
this, life seems to return to normal... for Ness, at least. For his neighbour, it's only
just beginning to change. All of Pokey's selfishness, uncaring and cruelty are amplified by
the tendrils of influence Giygas has spread throughout the world in an effort to stop Ness.
Obviously impressed by the gluttonous, angry thoughts of Pokey, Giygas called to Pokey, bringing
the boy to him and making Pokey one of his henchmen. Unlike most of Giygas' henchmen, Pokey
came of his own free will and thus retains it. He delights in making life hard for Ness and
everyone he encounters. He is trusted with control of the Devil's Machine, the device that
contains the destructive essence of Giygas. In return for his work, Giygas provides him with
wealth and power.
After finding Paula in the Happy Happy Village, you encounter the new Pokey. He's been made
a high-ranking figure in the Happy Happy Cult even though it's obvious that he doesn't believe
in it and isn't wearing blue. He sets some goons on you and quickly (well...) takes off.
Once you defeat Carpainter, the leader of the religion, everyone returns to normal and Pokey
leaves the village (after eating everything in the open store!).
Pokey lays low until you come to Fourside. He's become a financial aide to the big business owner Geldegarde Monotoli and very successful. He orders his bodyguards to throw you out of his office. After you visit Moonside and defeat the evil Mani Mani statue, you manage to get in to talk to Monotoli and rescue Paula, who's been kidnapped yet again. Pokey takes off again, this time stealing Monotoli's helicopter before you can take it.
Pokey quickly heads to Summers, where he bribes his way in to the museum to obtain a copy
of the hieroglyphs. After that he flies to Scaraba, where he... er... leaves a sign of his
passing. This part is still uncertain, as he must go through the pyramid (why else would he get
a hieroglyph copy), but later on the helicopter is found crashed in Deep Darkness.
You don't hear from Pokey for quite some time, until after you find the eighth Sanctuary. After the trip through Magicant, you return to Saturn Valley only to learn that Pokey has stolen the prototype Phase Distorter and kidnapped one of the Mr. Saturns! Once you retrieve a piece of the Onett meteorite, the new Phase Distorter is repaired and you're sent off. You find a crashed Phase Distorter and the Mr. Saturn, but Pokey seems to have disappeared...
Using the Phase Distorter 3, you warp to the past in your new robot bodies and battle up to
the cave Giygas is in. You walk through ominous chambers of piping, and come up to a large
eye that reveals an image of Ness' face! Pokey descends from the ceiling in a strange
device called the Spider Mech and now exhibiting the obvious signs of Giygas control! And
now you actually have to fight him...
