What's Happening? - Part 1 (June 2009).
I know, I know - I said that this page was not going to be updated anymore. But hey,
its been two years since the last update so I hope you don't think I break my word too
easily. Lets face it we all get a bit more spare time sometime in the year so why not
spend some of it doing something you enjoy? The first thing you'll notice is that this is
one long article rather than the a themed article of previous entries. This blogged
approach gives me the opportunity to wander off at tangents more than I normally do. So
here goes..
THIS PAGE IS BEST VIEWED IN 1280x1024 DISPLAY RESOLUTION.
Has this guy not done anything apart from work I hear you ask? Well not much.
My only noticable contribution was an article I did for a Asian Films website. I've always
admired Brian's (the author's) encyclopedic knowledge of Asian cinema and in one of my
wilder moments asked him if I could write a GWG article related to the Indian Sub
Continent. Although a bit rushed the result wasn't totally dismal and I'm sure you'll find
lots of other good stuff to read if you visit "View
from Brooklyn Bridge" or more specifically the page I added. Possibly the only
downside to a truely excellent web site is that the images are a bit small. So, just to
compensate for this here are a few thumbnails which expand in to nice big JPEGs and they
are all taken from or related to the original web page.
If truth be told I often find the
Hollywood GWG genre a bit formulaic these days. Possibly I'm becoming a bit jaded in my
old age but film from other countries often seems a bit more vital and exciting. My
article on Brian's page was covered only a proportion of the films and actresses I wanted
to cover plus numerous others which I just forgot to add. Here are some more deadly
damsels from the Indian Sub Continent who didn't make it to the article and who I'd have
liked to have included or mentioned in more detail. The more astute of you may recognise
Ashwari Rai amongst the others.
One of the articles never to have made it to the page was a "Wigs and
Disguises" article. Here is a sample of some of material I would have included within
the missed article. Sorry it's so brief. I would much prefer to give more detail but
time prevents this.
Other articles may have included updates to "Machine Gun Madams",
"Saree Assassins", "Bank Robbers", "Watching the Detectives"
(I know these are cheesy titles) plus new articles entitled "Snipers",
"Erotic Thrillers", "Wild Wild West", "Serving Servalan"
(Blakes 7) and "Bond Girls". In fact the James Bond spy films have featured very
little which is a little odd given the quota of beauties which Bond has encountered in
over 35 years of films featuring the character. There are hundreds of other web pages to
cover Bond films (this page likes to be a little unique in film selection) and to be fair
most of the girls are mere eye candy and some of his female adversaries have been real
damp squibs or, worse, transformed from bad girl to good girl once subjected to Bond's
natural charms. My own favourite bad girls have been Miranda Frost (Rosalind Pike) in 'Die
Another Day', May Day's cohorts (Grace Jones looked really ugly so honourable mentions go
to Alison Doody and Papillon Soo instead)in 'View to a Kill' , Fiona Volpe (Luciana
Paluzzi) in 'Thunderball', Xenia Onatopp (Famke Jansenn) in 'Goldeneye' and The Cigar Girl
(Maria Grazia Cucinotta) in 'The World is Not Enough'. 'Never Say Never Again', the
unofficial remake of 'Thunderball' is included starring the gorgeous Barbara Carrerra (as
Fatima Blush) despite the fact the film is not a recognised franchised Bond film. Lack of
space doesn't allow me to give much detail for each film so I've just gathered together a
few publicity stills and posed pictures. Amongst them are Caroline Munro and Fiona
Richardson who like most Bond girls were criminally underused in these films.
Another strong candidate for an article would have been "Posters and
Publicity" which speaks pretty much for itself. Though these medium often have little
relevance to the content of a film they do act as a visual incentive to hire or buy -
particularly in the expliotation/erotic thriller genre. Here are a few of the images which
would probably have appeared. The article would have covered the worldwide history
of the poster/publicity still hence the multinational selection here from lots of eras.
At this point I have made to make an editorial decision. There are in
fact several more pages to follow on from this point. At my current rate of progress
though they won't be finished until the end of 2009 - I actually started all this back in
January. So, what I'm going to do is split the page here and get the remainder of the page
uploaded later.
