COMMENTS : Canterbury love this time of year and they once again showed their class with this victory. Sydney City have shown scratchy form coming into the finals and the Dogs exploited a lack of options from the Roosters to win 2 tries to 1. Ricky Stuart was a standout for the Bulldogs with his kicking continually pushing the Roosters back. Fittler had a disappointing game for the home side, and in turn this seemed to affect the whole team. The Roosters need to have more options in their play to have any chance against the Dragons next week. The Bulldogs started their account with some great passing from one side of the field to the other, finished off with a dive over the line by Second-Rower, Brad Clyde. Sydney City hit back quickly though with Ivan Cleary crossing to take them into the lead. It took a hard straight run from Willie Talau to put the Dogs back into the lead in the 2nd half, and they never relinquished it. Daryl Halligan once again showed his prowess with the boot, kicking a goal from the sideline after Clyde's try.

COMMENTS : In a shock of the Finals so far, the Dragons came out with all guns blazing to romp all over the Melbourne Storm. This is the second foray into the finals from 2 attempts for the Storm, so one would have to believe that they are yet to really experience the intensity and pressure of finals footy. The Saints, with A Mundine leading the way simply ran all over the Storm who had no answers and barely any attacking flair. Lots of one off stuff and running from dummy half is not going to win a final. Nathan Blacklock ran in 3 second half tries and was an inspirational winger for the Dragons. If the Dragons can repeat this performance every week they will have no problems making the Grand Final. But consistancy is the name of the game. Can they go all the way? Meanwhile melbourne will have to really pick themselves up after this one and came across a hot Bulldogs side next week.

COMMENTS : This could have been a closer game, but Newcastle just couldn't last the 80 minutes They were in the game until the 59th minute when Cayless scored to take the Eels into the lead. Parra never looked back after that and the backs took over. Clinton Schifcofske had an outstanding game with a try and a 100% goalkicking performance. Jim Dymock had an excellent game at 5/8 as well playing all over the Johns brothers. Dymock had a slow start to the season at lock, but since moving to 5/8 he has lead the Eels to several big wins, especially in the abscence of Jason Smith. Speaking of Smith, he dived over for a try in the 28th minute and suffered a knee to the head from O'Davis. Smith didn't return for the rest of the game which makes the win even better for the Eels who have relied on Smith for many good performances this season. In the washup the game was won through better handling and better options from the Eels. Newcastle were throwing it around a fair bit but just couldn't crack the Eels line enough to make an impression. Parramatta's lasting power will also hold them in good stead going into a Preliminary finals matchup against Melbourne or Canterbury

COMMENTS : The Sharks were labeled with the 'finals chokers' term before this match. But when have they choked? They made the Super League GF in 1997 and went down to a home Broncos, and besides then, when have they made the finals to choke? They went out in this game to shut the critics up and knock the Broncos out of the 1999 race once and for all. The whole of Sydney was riding on their wave and especially the Sydney City side who were depending on a Sharks win to stay in the finals race! The Broncos really never got in the game. Ben Walker kicked a penalty to open the scoring for the match, but after that the Sharks poured on the points and the class to take an easy victory, a week off and a chance to shut those critics up for the rest of the season. Brisbane would have to be disappointed with their display, but I think it was a justified result. Brisbane were 'lucky' to make the Finals in the first place, and their form really didn't give their credence to be any sort of threat in the finals. I think the other 5 finals teams will be scared of the Sharks now. They looked hot yesterday and will be hard to stop!

COMMENTS : St.George-Illawarra and Sydney City are two teams that are not afraid to throw the ball around. The Saints came of an important win over the Storm the week before and the Roosters had been through a grind against the Bulldogs that they would like to forget. As it turned out, they would want to forget this game too. The Dragons came out firing in the first 10 minutes and the Roosters didn't look to have the will to win. But it just takes one man, and that man (as usual) was Brad Fittler. Through his handiwork the Roosters stayed in touch in the first half and were always in the hunt in the second, although he couldn't get them over the all important line one last time. Craig Smith was inspirational for the winners. His powerful running and big hits lead the Dragons attack, whilst Trent Barrett was impressive from the backs. Blacklock had a shocking game with 2 dreadful knock-ons that lead to Sydney City tries. He came good in the end though with a powerful surge and a setup for the final try. The Dragons still have a lot of work to go if they are looking to beat the Sharks next week.

COMMENTS : After the Storm's efforts last week you wouldn't be blamed for thinking that they would have a hasty exit against the powerful Bulldogs. But far from it! The Bulldogs, who are reknowned for their finals performances looked shocked at the Storm's intensity right from the starting whistle. Marcus Bai dived over out wide after 3 minutes and it was on. The lead changed 7 times in this game and it went a long way to show how close it was. But this may have been a little misleading. Canterbury had their chances to pull the game out of the fire, but really didn't capitalise on their chances like they did last year. Both sides made 9 handling errors each and many at crucial time (ie. scoring opportunities). In the end it all came down to a kick from Ricky Stuart that went straight into Matt Geyer's arms and he ran 95 metres to score in the 69th minute. Canterbury couldn't stage a late try and the game was over. This means no replay of last years forgettable Parramatta/Canterbury Preliminary Final, but a showdown between Melbourne and the Eels for a place in the GF.

COMMENTS : Disappointment reigned for Parramatta fans as the Storm crept over them to score a 2 point victory and to take themselves into their first Grand Final in only their 2nd year. However after the first half you would be excused from thinking that the Storm had no chance of making it through. Parramatta ripped through the Storms defences twice in the first half to take a comfortable first half lead, but then the Eels intensity dropped in the second half and the Storm took advantage of a lack of attack options as they ripped back through the Eels. A Richard Swain try 17 minutes from full time was enough to get the Storm through as the Eels paniced and couldn't hit back before full time. It was a sad way for the Eels to exit, as they did last year against the Bulldogs. It wasn't so much a choke from them, but more them thinking about the next week too much before putting the game out of reach from the opposition. Brian Smith has worked so hard with his team and didn't deserve for this to happen again as didn't the Eels fans.

COMMENTS : The minor premiers were hot favourites in this game to take it that last step and make the Grand Final. Even to win their first. But it all went wrong after the halftime. The Saints were average for the first half as a tough and grinding game saw The Sharks score the only try of the first half. But Mundine came out in the second half and ripped the Sharks apart. He scored 3 tries in a magical man of the match performance that took the newly merged team to their first Grand Final.

COMMENTS : The whole season came down to this. A grand final to finish the century between 2 new teams in their first grand finals. For many St. George-llawarra players it was their first taste of a Grand Final, but of course the St.George Dragons had been there 3 other times in the 90's and already knew the taste of defeat. For the ex-Illawarra players it was a chance to live out every players dream. Players like McGregor, Wishart and Barrett were all playing in their first Grand Finals. Meanwhile the Storm, who have only been together for 2 years were looking at a fairytale end to a long season. Many of the players were virtually unknown before the Storm was formed out of ex-Hunter Mariner players and unwanted reserve graders. They have unleashed the talents of players like Brett Kimmorley, Matt Geyer, Scott Hill, Robbie Ross and Marcus Bai combined with the experience and talent of stalwarts like Glenn Lazarus, Tawera Nikau and Stephen Kearney. It was billed as a State against State game with Sydney siders expected to barrack for the Dragons, but it didn't matter because the stadium was full for a world-record crowd for Rugby League and the biggest crowd to fill the new olympic stadium (beating the Bledisloe Cup crowd by about 500). The scene was set. St. George Illawarra had the better of the first 10 minutes, but neither side could cross the line, until Craig Fitzgibbon took advantage of a mistake at the back for the Storm to dive on a ball and make the first points. From there the Dragons dominated the first half as the Storm bumbled and fumbled their way through the remaing 30 minutes.

One of the highlights of the game occured in the 30th minute however when Kimmorley put in a chip kick down the field and chased after it. It seemed that he was going to reach it first when suddenly from out of nowhere Nathan Blacklock powered onto the ball as the ball bounced perfectly into his arms. He burst between Kimmorley and Ross (who ran into each other) and ran 70 metres to score untouched under the posts. The conversion gave the Dragons a 14-0 lead and at half time you could hear the printers printing the next days headlines already and the t-shirt manufacturers making the Dragons Grand Final victory t-shirts! But the Storm were berated by the national coach Chris Anderson at half time. Could they come back? Would the Dragons let them?

It didn't take long for the Storm to score their first points. Smith kicked a penalty goal after 2 minutes to get the Storm on the scoreboard and within 12 points of the leaders. The Dragons surely had to score next and seal the game. From the 53rd to the 59th minute 3 tries were scored. Melbourne scored first to Martin who seemed to score of a forward pass. It went to the video ref, but he didn't look at the pass. Harrigan would later be accused of making a wrong decision on that one. 4 minutes later Wishart and Bai went up for a bomb catch. Bai knocked it forward and McGregor took it and strolled over for a 4 pointer. Bartrim missed a conversion that would prove to be VERY costly. Melbourne needed something quick. 20 minutes remained and they were still 12 points in arrears. it didn't take long. 2 minutes after McGregors try Ben Roarty walked through the tiring Dragons defence to bring the Storm to within a converted try. the Dragons were tired. The Dragons were running one out and from the rucks and the Storm continued to plummel them in the forwards. Could the Dragons hang on? And should they? Melbourne kicked a penalty goal with 16 minutes remaining and it should have been enough time for the Dragons to steady themselves and put the game away. but the clock ticked on into the 70 minutes. 76 minutes passed and the Dragons had withstood every Storm attacking phase, but with 4 minutes to go Kimmorley hoisted a bomb up towards the wing of Craig Smith. We looked over there and there were 2 Storm players and one St.George-Illawarra player trying to make up ground. the Storm player was going to catch it! He did and as he hit the ground with his feet and started to bend down to score the try, Jamie Ainscough flew over the top and collected Craig Smith's head with his arm. Smith dropped the ball and collapsed onto the turf in the in goal...unconscious.

What would happen? Surely we couldn't...no...a penalty try? In a Grand Final? Bill Harrigan went to the video ref. We heard him say "I want you to see if he would have grounded the ball...."
