The Six Million Dollar Man

USA 1973

Long before The Terminator became the world's favourite cyborg, there was Steve Austin.

After a near fatal crash left him shattered, the US government turned him into a cyborg with the ability to run at 60mph, see for miles and lift heavy objects without putting his back out.

When The Six Million Dollar Man proved a smash hit, it wasn't long before canny producers launched spin-off series, The Bionic Woman.

Both shows made stars of Lee Majors and Lindsay Wagner while leaving many a young viewer making funny electronic noises while running around the playground.

Of course, old shows never die, they just get turned into TV movies and although they failed to capture the freshness of the original series, one did at least give Sandra Bullock the chance to prove she had screen charisma by the bus load.

A big screen version is now in the pipeline although adjusting for inflation, the makers would be better off renaming it The Sixty Million Dollar Man.
