One day Lina Inverse, an underdeveloped teenage girl, is surrounded by a group of bandits whom she had previously stolen from. A passerby, Gourry, sees the commotion and charges valiantly into battle saving Lina. Saddened by the fact that Lina is just a little girl, Gourry sulks about and mutters how it couldn't have been a babe that needed rescuing. Lina overhears the muttering, but doesn't say anything. Gourry, wondering what a little girl is doing all alone in the forest, asks to take Lina home. She says that she is travelling to Atlas City, so Gourry decides to accompany her.
Gourry soon finds out that Lina is a famous magician after all. He sees her true power after casting the mighty spell Dragon Slave, incinerating a black dragon and a whole village. After being together a while, Lina and Gourry find themselves to be a good team. On their journedy, they are faced with evil monsters galore, Zelgadis, Rezo the Red Priest, and Shabranigdo the Lord of Black Magic, and many others. They eventually meet up with more characters along the way.
This anime is a fantasy comedy and incorporates many elements of role playing games and adventure. It is pretty well done overall.
