Baroness DeCobray

File Name: Baroness Anastasia DeCobray
Birthplace: Eastern Europe
Primary Specialty: Intelligence
Secondary Specialty: Fixed Wing Pilot

Born, raised and spoiled by wealthy European aristocrats, the Baroness became a radical student activist, and ultimately, an international terrorist. She joined COBRA early in the organisation's history and quickly became a confidante of Cobra Commander. In one of her first COBRA outings, she personally led the force which originally kidnapped physicist Dr Adele Burkhart.

When Cobra Commander first brought Destro into the ranks of COBRA, the Baroness revealed that she and Destro had prior dealings. Where and when the Baroness and Destro established a relationship prior to COBRA remains unknown. The two had become close enough to be the only ones to know each others real names and pasts. If there was ever any loyalty in the Baroness, it was to Destro more than Cobra Commander.

Sensing Destro as a threat to his superiority, Cobra Commander brought the assassin Major Bludd into the ranks of COBRA to eliminate him. During a battle with the Joes in Washington, D.C., the Baroness was severely injured when her HISS tank was blown up. Foregoing a shot at Destro, Major Bludd chose to rescue the Baroness.

Bludd and the comatose Baroness were captured by the Joes, but managed an escape when COBRA raided the first Joe headquarters. Bludd took the scarred Baroness to the Bern Institute of Reconstructive Surgery in Switzerland to have her healed. A Dr Huntkinder saved her, making her look better than ever. However, the Joes had tracked Bludd and the Baroness. Bludd had also phoned Cobra Commander to ransom the Baroness back to him. When Cobra Commander and Storm Shadow showed up to retrieve the Baroness, she and Bludd left Cobra Commander to be captured by the Joes, only to be later rescued by Storm Shadow who in turn was captured in the process. The sly Baroness had hoped to takeover the ranks of COBRA along with Destro.

When this plot failed and Cobra Commander returned, the Baroness made further use of Major Bludd. Capturing the renegade boy Billy in COBRA's first base in Springfield, Bludd trained him to assassinate Cobra Commander. Destro, meanwhile, revealed his face to the Baroness to demonstrate his trust in her. In return she told him of the conspiracy. As the deed neared fruition, Destro recognised Billy as Cobra Commander's son, and put a stop to the assassination.

The Baroness shot Storm Shadow when he had reunited with his old friend Snake-Eyes, the Joe, and turned his back on COBRA. He was believed dead, and Dr Mindbender took possession of his body. The Baroness and Destro then helped Mindbender to create Serpentor from the cells of dead historical leaders, as well as Storm Shadow, in hopes of forming the perfect leader for COBRA.

The original Cobra Commander was later believed dead, and the Crimson Guardsman Fred VII claimed to be Cobra Commander. In order to prove that he was the Commander, Serpentor had the Baroness(who knew what Cobra Commander actually looked like) verify that this was true. When Fred revealed his face to her, she chose not to turn him in, but to use him as a partner to run COBRA and further her own ends.

During the Cobra Island civil war, COBRA allegiances were split between those faithful to the Baroness and the false Commander and those loyal to Serpentor. When the fighting broke out, the forces of Serpentor captured the Baroness. It was Destro, having been missing since Cobra Commander vanished, who returned to the island with a massive force and assumed domination briefly. The only prize he claimed was his love, the Baroness, after which he withdrew his forces.

Settling in with Destro, the Baroness filled him in on the imposter Cobra Commander's true identity. Soon, she was assigned to COBRA's Broca Beach outpost along with Zarana. The Baroness and Zarana fought and could not get along, so the Baroness simply arranged for Zarana for be captured by the Joes.

At that time, the Baroness received a phone call from the man who fixed her face, Dr Huntkinder. He was preparing to fix another face and thought it would be of interest to her. He faxed her a photograph of the man before he had been scarred, and the Baroness recognized it, claiming it was the man who killed her brother in Vietnam. The man was Snake-Eyes. When the Baroness was fifteen years old, she had accompanied her older brother, the Baron Eugen DeCobray, to Vietnam. A good man, and idol of the Baroness, Eugen was dealing medical supplies to aid the wounded. However, he found out this time the supplies were being traded in turn for weapons of war. His contacts shot him dead, but were in turn shot by a young soldier -- Snake-Eyes. At that point, the Baroness came in, finding Snake-Eyes standing over her brother with a smoking gun. Angry and bitter, she turned to her life to terrorism.

Therefore, when Huntkinder contacted her, she rushed to his institute to find Snake-Eyes unconscious and bandaged, with Scarlett at his side. The Baroness shot Scarlett in the head and took possession of Snake-Eyes. She had him imprisoned in the basement of the Cobra Consulate building in New York, but he managed to get loose. In doing so, he detonated explosions which set the building on fire.

Storm Shadow, out to rescue Snake-Eyes, scaled the outside of the burning building, and he and Snake-Eyes got to the Baroness at the same time -- but the upper floor of the building was collapsing, and it nearly dropped them to their deaths. As the Baroness was falling she was caught by Snake-Eyes, who in turn was held by Storm Shadow. Her saviours were both men she had tried to kill.

As the trio hung, Destro showed up in a helicopter to rescue the Baroness. Not willing to be robbed of her revenge, the Baroness was prepared to shoot Snake-Eyes. Destro stopped her, knowing the truth about what really happened to her brother. Destro's father had shown up at the examination of her brother's body, realising that the bullets that killed Eugen were meant for him. Unable to deal with the revelation, and her misspent life, the Baroness allowed herself to fall. Storm Shadow rescued her again though, turning her over to Destro to live with her conscience.

Destro gave up running his arms corporation, and his mask, to live in his castle in Scotland with the Baroness. Meanwhile, the real Cobra Commander was back in charge of COBRA, and he hunted them down. He captured the Baroness and brainwashed her to kill Destro, but aided by the Joe, Destro recovered the Baroness yet again and she accompanied him to his fortress in Trans-Carpathia. COBRA assaulted them there, but were repelled with help from the Joes. Knowing love would cancel out the hypnosis, Destro offered to submit to the Baroness, professing his affection for her. This act helped the Baroness overcome her brainwashing, at last proving her love for him. Destro then transformed the old mountain fortress into a larger and more majestic version of his Scottish castle, proclaiming it a home for her.

After many months together in Trans-Carpathia, the Baroness found herself becoming bored with their retirement and longed to see some action like the good old days. As if in answer, they found themselves taken hostage by an advance team of COBRA Ninjas, and followed shortly after by the arrival of Cobra Commander and a full troop complement. There, Cobra Commander returned the castle to its trapezoid COBRA fortress form and made it his new headquarters, having abandoned COBRA Island. Destro and the Baroness escaped from the dungeon and tipped the Joes off about COBRA's planned assassination of General Hawk. The Joes faked Hawk's death and flew in and extracted Destro and Baroness.

Hawk, Destro and the Baroness rendezvoused with Zartan on the abandoned Cobra Island, where they discovered COBRA's plans to revive Dr Mindbender. Together with Zartan, Destro and the Baroness infiltrated the castle while the Commander was away with most of his forces. There, the three stayed for several months while political turmoil in the neighbouring nations swept by them. COBRA having returned its attention to the eastern European nation of Borovia had backed the winning side in a civil war. Cobra was now the fully legitimate force behind a recognised nation, and the Commander's attention turned towards Destro's nearby castle once again.

The revived Mindbender revealed to the Commander that he had put in place brain implants many years ago, in both Destro and Zartan. Learning this, the Commander paid a house call to Destro, and unveiled his face to both Destro and Zartan, triggering their implants. Both became mindless-zombies, obedient to his will, and the Baroness and Billy, both resident at the time were placed in the dungeon as COBRA once again assumed control of the castle. Mindbender returned Destro and Zartan to their former allegiance to COBRA, and Destro immediately offered his tactical genius by eliminating Darklon in the small neighbouring town of Darklonia.

Finally, Snake-Eyes infiltrated the castle to rescue Storm Shadow, only to discover Dr Mindbender had brainwashed him along with the Baroness and Billy to their former COBRA loyalties. He fled empty handed back to the Joes, with COBRA on his heels. The Baroness was last seen under the Commander's control. It is not yet known if she broke free of his influence.
