Mirai Trunks is a fascinating character. He was initially silent man when he arrives in the Z timeline just before the death of Gokou. He then meets his father Vegeta, who at first refused to recognize him as his son (perhaps because Trunks had Bulma's hair and bore little resemblance to him). As events went to unfold, leading to the appearance of the monster Cell, he became much more powerful and an integral part of the Z team. Generally, he is a handsome, brooding, and really nice type of guy.
The "other" Trunks is the son of Vegeta and Bulma who grows up in a timeline where all the warriors are alive, Cell and the Androids having been defeated. He is Gokou's second son Goten's best friend. He still is purple-haired, but somewhat different from his brooding Mirai version, having a more outgoing personality (since he is being raised with Vegeta around). He later fuses with Goten to form Gotenks in the Majin Buu saga.
