Comment: This is a prison movie. There are no babes to ogle at; no great scenery to marvel at; and no 'slam-bang' special effects. What it does have is a compelling story penned by the horror master himself, Stephen King, brilliantly acted and utterly unforgettable.
Much has been said about Morgan Freeman being a great actor. Watch this movie and you'll agree. But let's not forget Tim Robbins, who shines as the innocent banker falsely accused, who has rock collecting as a hobby, and never let the prison bars cage his spirit, nor shatter his hope. What hope? Watch the movie.
This movie has the honour of being the highest rated movie in the IMDb, not without merit. Many will dispute this, but then, this is by far one of the best movie in recent memory; so maybe not many have watched the other classics.
The strength of this film lies in the acting. You won't really notice the music, not that its no good, but more because it sorts of melds into the background, never imposing itself on the main course: the dialogue. Within the span of about 2 1/2 hours, you'll be treated to some of the finest acting in modern cinema, telling a story you would actually want to believe.
You'd feel as if you have really been in prison for some 20 odd years with Andy Dufrane. All the usual elements of prison are there: the beatings, the unexpected friends and the "crappy" food. One thing this movie never degenerates into is being stereotypical. It shows you hope in a prison. It gives you a deeper appreciation of your life.
Is it worth it? YES, YES, YES. The ending is by far the most satisfying I've ever watched. It may be a little bit corny for some of you realists out there, but for most people, it will be the perfect closure to an incredible story.
Conclusion: Watch it !
