Top film, especially as it's based on historical fact. The music gets a bit trilly at times but 16th century Venice looks beautiful, as does Rufus. He's in Shakespearian sonnetesque mode, with lots of striding about and declaring his undying love. Catherine McCormack is fantastic as the feisty heroine and there's a creditable stab at presenting the lot of women just after the Dark Ages. If that's a little too deep, the sumptuous costumes and romance of everyone being ferried about by gondalas will keep you entertained.
