Enemy At The Gates

Period CostumeJoseph Fiennes: 50%

This is one of those rare treats - an intelligent war film. It's set during the siege of Stalingrad in WWII when the Russians and Nazis played cat-and-mouse in a rubble-filled No Man's Land of ruined houses, streets and department stores. There's a claustrophic atmosphere about the film, with few locations and real-time action. I challenge you not to hold your breath when Jude Law (a goodie Ruskie) is rendered immobile in a factory, trapped by an eagle-eyed sniper above.

Jo Fiennes plays an propaganda officer, intent on representing the relunctant Jude as a much-needed hero to the masses. It's definitely Jude's film but Jo manages to convey an incredible passion for his character's politics and his obsessive love for Rachel Weisz's character. However the entire cast is mesmerizing, and the film definitely stays in your head as an thought-provoking piece.
