Enigma

Period Costume

Jeremy Northam: 40%

It's not often that mathematicians and cross-word buffs get the chance to play hero, but in World War II the code-breakers at Bletchley Park helped immeasurably in winning the war. This cinematic version of Robert Harris's book, produced by Mick Jagger, is a great tribute to these unsung heroes and heroines.

Everyone is brilliantly cast, but it's probably Kate Winslet who shines the most as the dowdy Hester who helps Jericho, the maths genius, in finding out whether his ex was a German spy. Jeremy Northam obviously relishes his James Bondesque role of spymaster, and certainly cuts a dash in 1940s gear. Intercutting the codework with in-the-field shots of U-boats and Polish woods really bring home to you how important their work was. Even someone as avowedly allergic to maths and puzzles as me found the explanation of the Enigma machine and intercepts fascinating.

Bonuses: The ever-brilliant Tom Hollander turns up as Jericho's boss and the film could be a masterclass in portraying Britain in wartime with care spent on every uniform and hairstyle. Oh, and Matthew MacFayden turns up as a scarred bloke in a uniform at HQ.
