Cary Elwes: 60%

A Cary classic where he plays the ill-fated Guildford Dudley (OK, I know it sounds like a character from Sunset Beach, but it is the 16th century!), husband of England's 9 Day Queen. In the film Cary wears over-the-knee black boots and gets to keep his English accent. There's a little too much hairsprayed 80s coiffure at the wedding reception but Cary lolling decadently in walled gardens make hair disaster slip-ups forgivable. Beautifully filmed and quite an evocative drama, we managed to watch it during a History lesson once for 'revision'. Ah, what fools these history teachers be!

• Bonuses: Jean-Luc Picard plays Lord Grey: "make it so!". Plus Guildford's servant is a bit of all right too!
• Drawbacks: Helena "Stromping" Bonham-Carter is Lady Jane and, as with all her early roles, plays her as a petulant pug.
