Ruggero Deodato started his film career as an actor in the mid-fifties. In 1959 he became assistant director to the great Roberto Rosselini (Deodato was childhood friends with Rosselini's son Renzo). Aside from working with Rosselini, Deodato also assisted Antonio Margheriti, Sergio Corbucci and Riccardo Freda. In 1968, Deodato went on to direct his first film, Donne . . . Botte e Bersaglieri. A year later, after directing Zenabel, Deodato would spend the next 6 years directing news programs, movies and commercials for Italian television. 1975 marked Deodato's return to the big screen with Ondata di Piacere. During the proceeding years, Deodato would experiment making films under different genres. After having various success, Deodato directed his masterpiece in 1980. Cannibal Holocaust is widely considered to be the pinnacle of Italian exploitation films. Deodato soon found himself surrounded by enormous success and infamy. With this movie he gained the nickname "Monsieur Cannibal" (which he detests) and faced him with government charges for filming acts of animal cruelty. All charges were later dropped and the film went on to gain its legendary status. Deodato's subsequent movies have failed to capture the box-office and artistic success of Cannibal Holocaust. The director continues to make genre films and episodes for Italian television.

Fenomenal e il Tesoro di Tutankamen **

Ultimo mondo cannibale **
Deodato's first cannibal film finds Massimo Foschi trapped by a primitive tribe on the island of Mindanao. He meets up with genre star Me Me Lai and plans his escape. A good movie, but a mere warm up for Cannibal Holocaust.

Cannibal Holocaust ***
An extremely unnerving an effective film from Ruggero Deodato. A manipulating documentary crew provokes some cannibals to horrific results. A notorious film that actually lives up to its name!!

La casa sperduta nel parco (I choose not to rate this film)
This Last House on the Left rip-off finds David Hess and John Morghen wrecking havoc on a party of rich kids. I found this film to be more unsettling than Cannibal Holocaust!

Inferno in diretta **

Camping del terrore **
A Friday the 13th rip-off with a bunch of teenagers being stalked at a camp-site. An interesting plot twist: David Hess is not the sadistic killer!. A lesser effort from Deodato.

The Barbarians & Co. (The Barbarians Brothers) **
Ruggero Deodato directs this tame but likable "peplum" featuring American bodybuilders David and Peter Paul (aka "The Barbarian Brothers"). The two twins are separated from their tribe as infants and are raised separately in the enemy's underground mine. When the two are older they are reunited and join forces to defeat the evil kingdom that imprisoned them. Luigi Montefiori appears briefly as Jacko, an arms dealer. Deodato gives us a marginally entertaining film, which does not display the talent he is capable of.

Minaccia d'amore ***

The Washing Machine ***
In the book Spagetti Nightmares, Deodato discusses his disappointment with this film. I, however, found it to be an effective Italian "giallo." An inspector is called on to investigate the discovery of a mutilated body in a washing machine. The corpse is no where to be found and the informants turn out to be three conniving sisters. Each sibling takes a turn in seducing the inpatient inspector, while entrapping him with intricate mind games. An engrossing film with many plot twists and a wonderful score by ex-Goblin Claudio Simonetti.
