This is one of my favorite series from the 80's. Whenever, we look at actors from the 80's and early 90's, no one on the Internet really seems to mention Alex Man Zhi Leung. I've always thought of him as a very talented artist and it's TVB's loss that Alex left. He did a lot of really good series in the 80s and if any of you haven't seen his series, I would strongly recommend them. And Yet We live is really one of his best.

In terms of the series And Yet We Live, I prefer to think of it as a combination of "3 parts" even though the its just one long series in itself. There was part one which primarily focused on Alex and his younger brother in the series, Lam Ka Wah and how his mother was ultimately murdered. Part one also focuses on Alex's relationship with his girlfriend in the series, Lam Wing Han. Chan Man Yee is also introduced as the lawyer helping Alex with his mom's case.

Then we get to what I think of as the second part in the series where Alex is finally able to become a cop. This is also where he marries his girlfriend. Ray Liu Leung Wai is introduced as a headstrong cop who has high expectations of himself. Ray's conflict with his biological father ensues and his younger half sister, Maggie Siu, is introduced. In addition, he enters into a relationship with Chan Mun Yee. However, Ray's future is ultimately changed after he accidentally murders his father's niece and frames Alex's wife for the murder. Thus, I see an ending to part 2 as Ray and Alex's friendship collapses along with Ray's sense of morality. Also, his relationship with Chan Mun Yee ends after this incident.

Part 3, in my opinion, begins with Alex switching to a different police dept in order to begin a new life. He meets his colleague at the police station, Lau Ching Wan, and has problems with him. Teresa Mo is introduced as the mistress of an abusive mafia leader and Alex's neighbor. Ultimately, Ray is released from prison and the two come to differences of opinion again and soon they become sworn enemies...

This is just a brief introduction to the series. I hope it sounds captivating to those of you who've never seen it...

I just re-read the intro and it sounds more like an English paper. Anyways, here's the story...

Alex Man plays the character Ching Ka Chun who's an architect. He lives with his parents and his aunt lives right next door. The beginning of the series blends in little bit of humor because Alex's dad and his uncle make it a habit of annoying each other. Anyways, in the beginning Alex is dating his cousin. His cousin is a good gal but her personality gets her in trouble. She ends up getting raped by Dai Zhi Wai (Alex's friend's brother), who's this rich, evil guy. His girlfriend leaves Hong Kong to start a new life.

Alex has a brother in Viet Nam played by Lam Ka Wah. Lam Ka Wah is a tough personality type and he holds a grudge against his dad and brother because they wouldn't help get him out of Viet Nam (the truth was that they tried every legal way but couldn't get the papers). During this time, life is still very hard in Viet Nam so Lam Ka Wah escapes to HK. Lam Ka Wah and Alex develop some misunderstandings but soon they work things out. His dad gets him a fake ID. Things are going well for Alex and he gets a new girlfriend, Lam Wing Han. However, his mom gets run over by Dai Zhi Wai and an exciting court case begins.

Chan Mun Yee just arrived in Hong Kong from England. She becomes Alex's lawyer. Chan Mun Yee is a very righteous person and she and Alex become good friends. In court, they have their ups and downs but in the end, the lost because of Dai Zhi Wai's dirty tricks. Lam Ka Wah is pissed that Dai Zhi Wai is declared not guilty and decides to take the law into his own hands and murders him. Because of this, Lam Ka Wah had to leave HK. He went to the Philippines and began a new life there.

Alex's childhood dream was to become a cop. Now that his mom was gone, he decided to join the police force.

Alex was having problems with Lam Wing Han's mom. She got involved with the wrong people and ended up participating in illegal activities. When she tried to leave the fake credit card organization, her son (who's mentally retarded) accidentally killed one of the leaders. Being a good cop, Alex had to arrest Lam Wing Han's brother. During the chase, her brother got run over by a car. Because of this, Alex and his girlfriend broke up. After many months, Lam Wing Han finally forgave him and they got married.

During an incident, Alex meets Ray Liu, another cop. The two had some conflicts when Alex's boss told Alex's team to join with Ray's team to catch a very tricky murderer. This murderer was killing everyone who took part in putting him in jail a few years ago. As it turns out Chan Mun Yee was the prosecuter who put him in jail. This was how Ray met Chan Mun Yee.

Ray and Chan Mun Yee soon started dating. Alex and Ray also resolved their conflicts. His mom, Lee Heung Kam, became really chummy with Alex and she soon became his godmother.

Ray soon finds out that his biological father is a really rich guy. He also has a younger sister, Maggie Siu, who was really bad at the beginning. Ray has problems at work and he quits his job to start his own company. His father finally comes to his senses and recognizes Ray as his son. However, one day, Ray accidentally kills his dad's niece, Chan Mei Kei. He frames Alex's wife. She (Lam Wing Han) met Ray on the dock and told him that she wanted to tell her husband about the murder. She accidentally fell in the water and Ray didn't save her. A witness saw this happen and told the police. However, in Hong Kong, it wasn't illegal to "keen sai but gau" (let someone die). Because of this, Alex broke off his friendship with Ray. After pursuing various leads, Alex's team finally put Ray in jail for the murder of Chan Mei Kei. Ray fell off the roof during the chase and broke his leg...therefore, he has a limp now. After seeing Ray's true personality, Chan Mun Yee also broke up with Ray and she left HK and went back to England.

A few years pass, during which Alex and his cousin were transferred to another police station (near the rural areas). There, he meets the new sergeant, Lau Ching Wan. He comes to differences with Lau Ching Wan, who always tries to do things that cops aren't supposed to (such as hitting suspects).

Alex meets his next-door-neighbor, Teresa Mo, who is the mistress of a mafia leader, Chan Pui. Alex tries to help her and in the process, he finally puts Chan Pui in jail. Teresa begins to like Alex but he rejects her.

Chan Mun Yee comes back to Hong Kong. Ray is let out of jail. He tries everything to get his girlfriend back, but she rejects him. Instead, Chan Mun Yee and Alex soon start to date. Ray does many more evil things...he kills Lau Ching Wan, he takes over Maggie's money after his father's death, and finally forces his mom to the point of insanity. He also hires people to kidnap Alex and inject him with cocaine...because of this, Alex is fired and he is forced to go to jail (I can't remember exactly why). When Alex is let out, he tries to get even with him.

Lau Ching Wan tried to kill Ray because Ray killed his sister...during the fight, a gunshot was accidentally fired and Alex told the police that Ray killed Ching Wan even though it was an accident. While he was out on bail, Ray kidnapped Chan Mun Yee and told Alex to meet him...a big fight occurred and Ray was heavily injured and he died.

Ray's mom, Lee Heung Kam slowly recovered and never found out that her son died. Alex took care of her and told her that Ray was in the US. Alex and Chan Mun Yee got married and had a baby boy.
