This series is really
good. It's a play off of FOJ. I'll have to admit though, it's not
as funny as FOJ. Lawrence and Bowie just don't have the chemistry
that Michael and Bobby did. Lawrence seems too serious (but it is
appropriate since, they are doctors). However, I am pleased with
Steven Ma and Cheung Ka Fai's roles in the series. Steven Ma has
improved dramatically since FOJ 4 and 5. So far, his character as
Joe is my favorite in the series. William's character lacks
originality, as he seems to have taken on the role of
"Raymond" again.
Their "Roles" in HH and a little background
1) Lawrence is a brain surgeon. He's married to
Iwanbano("Rebecca") but they got a divorce pretty early
on. He actually caught his wife sleeping with another guy.
2) Bowie is a supervisor of the emergency room. He has a
mysterious past and a dead girlfriend that he can't put aside.
3) Ada has divorced parents and a boyfriend who's in jail. She
works in the ER under Bowie.
4) Flora is a lawyer. She and Bowie had a "thing" (he
was her date 10 years ago in college but he never showed up) in
the past only Bowie has no idea what he did to her.
5) Cheung Ka Fai's a cop (sergeant). He meets Steven on the
basketball court and they become really good friends.
6) Steven works in the ER under Bowie. He was really bad when he
was younger, hanging out with the mafia, and caused the death of
his older brother, something he regrets deeply. He lives with his
mom.
7) William is Flora's younger brother. He has recently selected
his field of specialization, the brain. He works under Lawrence.
He was gay but now he's straight again.
8) Astrid is the head nurse at the hospital. She's a widow.
Lawrence, Bowie, and William are living together. Ada and Flora
are roommates also.
General Summaries of Episodes 1-22 To make the
summaries easier for me (because I can't remember the exact
chronological order of events), I'll summarize the main events
that happened to each character
Lawrence=Paul
The series opens in an operation room where Paul is performing
brain surgery on a patient. Gilbert is watching the operation.
He's thinking of specializing in the brain. After a successful
operation, Paul is on his way to get his car and he runs into
Henry at the parking lot.
Henry works in the ER. Right when he gets to the ER, the first
patient sent in is Rebecca, Paul's wife. She apparently had an
overdose of sleeping pills. Rebecca's lover and Annie brought her
to the hospital. Henry suspects that Rebecca's having an affair
but doesn't say anything. He calls Paul and tells him to get to
the hospital. Meanwhile, Jackie has a talk with Rebecca and she
wrongly assumes that Paul is a bad husband. When Paul arrives at
the hospital, Rebecca tells him that he has never really cared
for her. He only cared about his job.
When Rebecca recovers, Paul tries to make up for things but she's
unwilling to accept him. She's constantly complaining about him
and saying how what he's doing now doesn't really matter.
Paul gets into some legal trouble when a patient from 8 years ago
sues him for negligence in explaining other options to her
surgery. She had cancer in her uterous and it had to be removed
(I think?). Later, she sought other medical advice and doctors
told her that she had other alternatives. As a result, she was
suing Paul because she couldn't have children. Annie was her
lawyer. Things worked out fine though because Paul had a talk
with the woman and she changed her mind and decided not to sue
him.
At this point, Paul felt like he was getting no support from his
wife. In fact, Rebecca was siding with the woman who was suing
Paul. Later, Paul caught her in bed with another guy in their own
house and they decided on a divorce.
Even during the divorce, Rebecca still has a really big attitude
problem. She tries to sell their house without his approval and
she keeps on walking into the house after she sold it back to
Paul.
After she moves out, Henry decides to buy the other half of the
house and Gilbert decides to rent the last room. Hence, the three
bachelors are living together. (There was a really funny scene
where Rebecca walks in just as Gilbert tells Henry to look at the
cut on his back. ---remember that Gilbert is gay so Rebecca
thinks something's up with them =)
The second significant case with Paul is about his friend's
younger sister. She has leukemia but they were finally able to
find someone who would donate his bone marrow to her. However, he
backed out on his decision at the last minute. Paul, though, is
able to encourage him to see things from the girl's perspective
and he finally gives in. The operation was really successful, but
the girl is later kidnapped, raped and killed. The killer is let
loose due to lack of evidence against him. However, he ends up in
the hospital as Paul's patient. Paul's friend wants him to mess
up the surgery but after much thought Paul realizes that he's a
doctor after all, and he performs the surgery which is
successful. However, Paul is really pissed off at the guy and
when he reveals to Paul that he killed the girl, Paul runs after
him and punches him. The guys promises trouble but Paul's
professor and Gilbert, who witnessed the incident, said that they
saw nothing. Later, the guy ends up in the emergency room because
a crazy man stabbed him numerous times and he dies becuase of the
wounds.
There was another case about a little boy who needed a liver
transplant from one of his parents. However, his mom had liver
problems before and wasn't a suitable donor. Therefore, they had
to find the father of the kid. He turned out to be one of Annie's
clients who was in trouble with the law. The father,
unfortunately, has drinking problems and his liver wasn't
suitable either. Therefore, the little boy dies. (really sad)
The case about the little boy brought Annie and Paul together.
Paul started falling for Annie after their one night stand. Paul
and Annie went to the bar one night and she complained that he
was always so serious. Therefore, she dared him to walk up and
talk to a girl, which he did, and it was really funny because the
girl rejected him. After their fling, Paul wanted to pursue his
relationship further with Annie but she said that they had gotten
as far as she wanted to get and their relationship pretty much
ended there.
Later on, Paul and Jackie's misunderstandings are cleared up when
she realizes that Rebecca was the one who was having an affair
all along. They become pretty good friends when Jackie finds out
that Paul might have a tumor in his nose (?). She becomes very
concerned and Paul is a nervous wreck because the report wasn't
out yet about whether he actually did have a tumor. Jackie was
really supportive of him during the days when they were waiting
for the report to come out. Some of their scenes were really
cute. In one scene, they went to watch the sunrise in his car.
Jackie starts to like him soon after that. She gives him a box
full of snacks when she realizes that he doesn't have time to
eat. She sneaks into his house and restocks the boxes for him
too.
Bowie=Henry
Henry's the playboy of the bunch. He's always hanging out with
different women at the bar. In reality, he is haunted by his past
girlfriend who's now dead.
He and Annie get off to a really poor start because Annie doesn't
like him for some reason. However, he doesn't know why and one
time he just asks her if he's slept with her before and that was
why she didn't like him but she responded saying that she'd let
him think about it.
The only really interesting part about Henry is the part where
Lum Kei Yun comes out with her (and Henry's) son. Lum Kei Yun was
one of Henry's numerous chain of girlfriends. Her company was
having some legal problems so they hired Annie. Therefore, she
ran into Henry again. Later, her son, Billy, was injured and she
took him to the ER and Henry treated the little boy. Billy has a
slight disease where he can't sit still. Lum Kei Yun and Henry
become better acquainted and she asked him if he would take Billy
to the beach and teach him how to swim because her divorced
husband never got around to doing it. Henry later finds out that
Billy wasn't that husband's son and he starts suspecting that
Billy is actually his son. Henry tries to introduce a doctor
friend to Lum Kei Yun because he knows that he can't give her
what she wants--marriage. Lum Kei Yun asks Henry if he ever
thought of a woman having a baby for him but he responds by
saying that women these days are smart and know how to deal with
unwanted pregnancies. Lum Kei Yun begins to sense what Henry
truly feels and she leaves. However, Henry searches furiously for
her becuase he still wants to find out if Billy is his son. He
runs into her one day and starts chasing her. Paul and Annie are
with him and Annie promises to ask for him because Lum Kei Yun is
reluctant to talk to him. She reveals to Annie that Billy is
indeed Henry's son. Annie doesn't know how to tell Henry the
truth but Lum Kei Yun tells her to tell him what she thinks will
make him feel better. Annie lies to Henry and says that Billy
isn't his son becuase she knows that he doesn't want the
responsibility. Later, Lum Kei Yun leaves Hong Kong with Billy
and Henry says good bye to both of them. (I don't think Henry is
bad in any way. He just doesn't know how to deal with
relationships. Even though he's always sleeping with different
women in the series, I think he's still feeling guilty about his
dead girlfriend)
Annie has a reconciliation with him after she hears about his old
girlfriend's story.
Ada=Jackie
As one of the doctors working in the ER, Jackie interacts with
numerous patients everyday. Her biggest problem in the beginning
of the series was jumping to conclusions about Paul. However,
Jackie has a great sense of humor and she gets along really well
with almost everyone.
Her parents are divorced. Her father apparently had an affair and
her mother couldn't tolerate that so they had a divorce. Her
boyfriend is in jail for committing a murder. She's waited for
him all these years (she even rides a motorcycle because he liked
to). However, when he's released from jail, he realizes that
they're not compatible. Therefore, they break up. Although Jackie
is really sad at first, she soon realized that she was putting
too much pressure on him. (Her mom also had a chat with her
boyfriend and told him to stay away from Jackie).
Jackie's the really nosy type. She thinks that Paul is a bad
husband, so therefore, she's really rude to him at the hospital
whenever she sees him. Later though, she finds out that Rebecca
was the one with the problem and not Paul. They become closer
friends.
Jackie and her boyfriend break up because he feels that she
really doesn't need him. She planned everything for him from the
day he got out of jail, and in a way, he felt that they were
drifting further apart. (Jackie's boyfriend isn't a bad guy. He's
actually pretty nice.)
Like I said, Jackie's really nosy. There was one part that was
quite funny. Gilbert's mom (who lives in Canada) sent a girl to
Hong Kong to visit her son (she wanted to play match-maker for
her son). The girl's name was Ivy and Jackie told her that
Gilbert was gay. Then when Gilbert confronted her about the
issue, Jackie somehow twists the words and makes it sound as if
he's the one who was wrong.
Jackie finds out early on that she has a constricted blood vessel
in her brain which is interfering with the blood flow. I think
the condition is called AMI (?). Her doctor encouraged her to
undergo surgery, but as a doctor herself, Jackie knew that she
could be risking her life if she did undergo surgery. At first
she thought of taking an extended leave from the hospital but she
decided that she'd be happier working, so therefore she stayed.
I've gotten to the part where Jackie is beginning to like Paul.
Flora=Annie
Annie is a lawyer. She gives people the impression that she's a
flirt and she likes to sleep around. She likes to hang out at the
bar. However, in reality, she's always been waiting for Henry.
There was one really funny scene with her where Peter is with the
rest of the guys at the bar (and he's never met Annie before).
She comes walking into the bar and Peter was like "That
girl's a prostitute. I can tell by the way she walks and from my
experience as a cop." It was hilarious because all the guys
started cracking up and Gilbert was like, "That's my
sister." And later, Joe tells him that Annie's a lawyer.
William=Gilbert
For a while Gilbert was gay, but then he started liking Jackie.
He told her what he felt but she rejected him saying that she
already had a boyfriend. Even though their relationship didn't
work out, they were still good friends.
Gilbert contracts AIDS from a girl (May Kwong) he saved from a
car wreckage. He was cut by the glass and he touched her blood
while he was helping her. He's shocked by the news and tries his
best to accept it.
Cheung Ka
Fai=Peter
Steven =Joe
Astrid = Helen
These two are the funniest combination in the series thus far.
Peter and Joe met on the basketball court when Joe accidentally
hit Peter in the head with the ball. Then they started playing
together and became really good friends.
One scene in the beginning was really exciting. Some guys had
robbed the bank and Peter came across the robbers. He shot some
of them but two of the robbers went back into the bank and were
holding people hostage. One of the robbers was seriously injured.
They wanted the hospital to send someone out and Joe was selected
(probably because he's had experience dealing with these types of
people in the past). When Joe arrives on the scene, Peter tells
him to be careful and then he reaches down to give him his belt
(for good luck). Joe thought he was gonna take his pants off or
something =) Joe is successful rescuing the people and he's able
to encourage the burglers to turn themselves in. He meets Amy
inside the bank because she was one of the hostages.
Another funny scene is when Joe is at Lawrence's house. He helps
himself to noodles (he was eating from the pot)and Henry was
like, "where's mine?". Joe responds that he'll give him
his share when he's finished eating from the pot. The guys were
all grossed out and Gilbert came back and responded, "When
you eat at home, do you eat from the rice cooker and when you're
finished, give your mom the leftovers?" It was sooo
hilarious.
Peter and Joe also have a lot of other funny scenes. One time,
Peter caught an old lady who stole someone's necklace but the
only problem was that she swallowed the necklace. Therefore,
Peter took her to ER and Joe was checking the old lady. The
X-rays showed that she did steal and swallow the necklace and
Peter wanted Joe to operate on her to get the necklace out. Joe
told Peter that he was crazy and that he'd just have to wait for
the necklace to reappear in her feces. When the time came, Joe
told Peter to go pick up the feces himself =)
There's a lot more funny scenes but those were just some
examples.
Peter and Joe also fall for the same woman, Helen. Helen's
husband, a doctor, died years ago already. Even though they both
like her, they're still good friends and haven't done anything to
harm their friendship. Joe tells her that he likes her but this
puts a lot of pressure on Helen because she's older than him and
because her sister-in-law likes Joe. She rejects him because she
only feels like they're friends.
Episodes
23-32
The next few episodes were kind of slow. Gilbert confesses to his
friends that he has AIDS. His friends are really great and they
still treat him in the same manner (almost to the point where I
think they're kind of overdoing it and Annie doesn't seem too
concerned about her brother either. I think the whole AIDS thing
was really poorly depicted).
Gilbert finds out that he contracted AIDS from Fannie (May Kwong)
after she goes to the hospital. He's really mad at her but after
Jackie tells him about Fannie's bad childhood, Gilbert becomes
more forgiving. Fannie falls in love with Gilbert and Gilbert
shows that he's really concerned about her. At one point, when
she's really sick, he confesses that he loves her too and they
are together for a little while. One day though, Fannie leaves
the hospital and she's discovered dead by the beach (I was kind
of confused about this part. I think she committed suicide but
I'm not sure). Anyways, Gilbert was really sad because of her
death.
Peter's being harassed by Judy, who's constantly following him
around. She has the keys to his house and she keeps on staying
there when she's bored. He's constantly avoiding her so he can't
go home either. Instead, he's always at Joe's house, bothering
him. Peter is really nice though. He tries to set Helen and Joe
up even though he likes Helen himself. Joe and Helen become
friends again. (She was initially mad at him because he kept on
telling her that he liked her and it was causing a lot of
problems for her at home). Joe still hasn't given up on her
though.
Paul took one of Henry's old books to read and inside the book,
he saw that someone had signed it "N.M." and that they
had a date. Paul harasses Henry about the identity of
"N.M.". After a lot of thought, Henry finally remembers
that "N.M" is actually Annie and they go out to the bar
for a drink. Henry and Annie start dating after this. However,
one night, Henry brings a girl to Annie's house and sleeps with
her (I missed the part before this so I have no idea why he did
this. I assume he wanted Annie to stay away b/c he kept on having
these weird flashbacks about his old girlfriend. I hope I'm not
confusing you. Like I said, I missed this part but what I think
happened is that Henry had a complete flashback about his old
girlfriend and that she somehow committed suicide because of him.
Henry remembers the pain and he doesn't want to start a new
relationship and hurt Annie so he tries to push her away before
they become too close
.ok, I'm like making this part up but
I have to go and watch this part again =) sorry for confusing you
but its what I think happened). Anyways, Jackie comes home in the
morning and she thought that Henry had spent the night with Annie
but then the girl walks out and Jackie gets really pissed of at
Henry.
Gilbert encourages Jackie to tell Paul that she likes him. One
night, they go out to dinner together and afterwards, she tries
to hold his hand but he puts his hand into his pocket instead.
Jackie starts yelling at him and poor Paul, who had no idea that
she wanted to hold his hand, was sooooo confused. Later that
night, she faints and Paul's really worried about her. The next
day, she tells him about her illness and he wants to help her but
she tells him that she's fine. Paul tries to encourage her to
undergo surgery but Jackie doesn't want to because she knows that
her chances of having a successful surgery are very slim. He also
tells her to tell her parents about her illness and she does.
Later, Jackie quits her job and goes to live on her friend's
yacht. She runs into her old boyfriend on the dock and has a long
talk with him. Meanwhile, Paul and Annie are really worried about
her because they don't know where she is. I think Paul realizes
how much she means to him.
Amy writes Joe a note telling him that she likes him. Joe rejects
her but they still remain good friends. Amy knows that he likes
Helen and tries to get them together. She's successful, and Helen
and Joe start dating (this is pretty much the end of their story.
You don't see Helen anymore after this). Peter and Judy get into
a fight after she's accused of murder. He thinks that she's
guilty even though she's innocent. Judy wins the case in court
and she's released (her lawyer was Ben ie. Bobby Au Yueng from
File of Justice---they mention him as being the lawyer but you
don't get to see him). Because of Peter's accusations, Judy is
angry at him. Peter realizes then that he really likes Judy and
she makes him suffer for a bit before she forgives him. It was
really funny =) They got together at the end.
Annie finds out where Jackie is and rushes to tell Paul. He isn't
quite sure what to do but Annie encourages him to tell Jackie how
he really feels. Paul is actually very insecure after his divorce
and he doesn't want to put too much hopes into another
relationship. He does go to the dock to find her but she left
already with her old boyfriend on a trip (Her ex-boyfriend had to
drive his boss's yacht out of Hong Kong to another country and
she was bugging him and wanted to go also. He didn't want to take
her but she pretty much coerced him into it.). They left just as
Paul arrived. Paul finds out from someone that Jackie left
already. He stares out into the ocean for a little and then
leaves. Meanwhile, Jackie's ex-boyfriend turns back because its
raining too hard. Jackie gets off the yacht and sees Paul
standing there in the rain. They go into his car and talk. Paul
pretty much tells her that he likes her but Jackie says that
she's not thrilled because she has this illness. Therefore, she
doesn't want to start a relationship. They do end up going out
though, despite what Jackie says here. She decides to undergo the
surgery for him.
Henry and Annie are speaking to each other and he invited her out
to dinner. However, Judy has gotten in trouble with the mafia and
calls Henry out to help her (Henry's ex-girlfriend --the dead
one- was Judy's older sister). When they're on their way to the
car, they see a guy on a motorcycle with a gun. He shoots at them
and Henry pushes Judy away. He gets shot twice (once in the head
and once in the stomach). Before he falls, he sees his
ex-girlfriend standing in front of him again. Annie calls Henry
and Judy tells her that Henry was shot. She rushes to the
hospital. Meanwhile, its Jackie's last day helping out at the
hospital and she complains that its been too quiet. Henry is
pushed in and Jackie and Joe are both shocked to see him. They
try their best to stabilize his condition. Later, Henry's
supervisor comes into ER and helps them. They transfer him to
another dept so that he can undergo surgery to get the bullets
out. Paul operates on Henry's head. The surgery is successful and
his friends are all really happy. When Henry comes out of his
coma, all his friends go to visit him. Annie goes also and Henry
apologizes to her and tells her that he saw his ex-girlfriend
right before he fell. (It was kind of his way of telling her that
he felt his dead girlfriend was more important).
Paul has to perform the surgery for Jackie. He's very fearful of
the operation because he only has 15 minutes to remove the
dysfunctional part of her blood vessel. If this part of the
operation is not completed within this timeframe, then Jackie
could be in a coma for the rest of her life. During the surgery,
something goes wrong and Paul goes overtime by two minutes. He's
really upset and he leaves the room.
Henry realizes that he really shouldn't keep on thinking about
the past. He buys a new lighter. His friends encourage him to ask
Annie out again and Judy puts him on the spot and forces him to
talk to her. Henry tells Annie that he really likes her. Annie
forgave him and they were together at the end of the series.
Paul, meanwhile, visits Jackie everyday at the hospital. It was
really sweet. He read her the story, The Little Prince because
she told him once that she always cried at the end of the story.
However, she still didn't wake up. One day, it started to rain
outside and he saw a rainbow. He recalled that Jackie once told
him that she's never seen a rainbow and that she really wanted to
see one. He rushed to the hospital but she still didn't wake up.
He continued reading the book to her and he fell asleep reading.
He had a dream that Jackie woke up but then he woke up and
realized that it was all a dream. The series ended with Paul
kissing Jackie's hand. It was really sad =( =(
