The Price of Growing Up is one of Alex Man's great series of the mid 1980's. In the series, you'll see that Stephen Chow is still a supporting actor. This wasn't one of my favorites, but it was very popular back in its time.

In the very beginning, the audience sees Alex's mom committing suicide. Alex is the illegitimate son of Kwan Hoi San. Lee Heung Kam is Alex's mom's next-door-neighbor. She takes Alex to the orphanage after his mom dies and later on adopts him and treats him like her own son. Actually, there was an incident where Alex almost gets adopted by his real father but perhaps it was fate, he let his best friend Francis get adopted instead.

I still remember that Alex and Dodo were hilarious at the beginning of the series. In the beginning, Alex was a security guard at a television station and Dodo was an interior decorator. They met one day when Dodo snuck into the tv station to get pictures of the set because one of her customers wanted the exact same design as a certain tv program set. Anyways, a crazy man happens to get loose at the station at the same time and somehow Alex, another security guard and Dodo end up on the roof with the crazy man. Anyways, the crazy guy tells Alex to take off his pants and throw it to him but Alex misses the throw and Dodo has to take her pants off to give to him. Well, to make a long story short, Alex catches the guy but Dodo is very angry at him because she had to take her pants off.

As it turns out, Dodo's dad has been keeping a "second house". His other wife is Alex's adopted mom, Lee Heung Kam. Dodo's dad get paralyzed and Dodo's mom finds out about "the other woman". They end up all having to live together.

Dodo and Alex end up dating each other and everything is good until Dodo finds out that she has cancer. Therefore, she leaves Alex and marries Tsang Kong, who is supposedly old enough to be her dad, but he is very rich and treats her very well.

On the other side of the story, Kathy goes out with Francis but she doesn't like him very much. Francis, on the other hand, loves her more than anything. Well, Francis later on turns evil and finds out that Alex is the real son of Kwan Hoi San. Kathy leaves him and marries Alex, someone whom she really likes. They end up having a son. Francis marries Alex's brother's ex-girlfriend.

Soon Dodo comes back from the US and she is cured. However, Tsang Kong has been paralyzed during a diving accident. He is now very tempramental and always thinking that Dodo still likes Alex. However, he later dies.

At the end, Kathy gets killed after being run over by a car (it was Francis' fault). Francis goes crazy and Alex takes over his father's company with Stephen helping him. Alex and Dodo are still good friends. The last scene shows Alex taking the baby to Kathy's grave.
