Rain in the Heart is a story of three good friends and the problems they face at home and with their relationships and the struggles they endure to succeed in life.

Roger grew up in a broken family. He was the illegitimate son of a fairly rich man (Kwan Hoi San) and he always disliked his father because he thought that he had forced in mother into the relationship (His dad was like 30 years older than his mom). After his dad's true wife died, Roger and his mom moved in with his dad's family. This integration went poorly and Roger couldn't stand the family and their endless chatter. Therefore, he moved back into his old house, next to his best friend, Lam Ka Wah.

Lam Ka Wah was the outgoing, energetic type of person who didn't have a very strong education, but he had a kind heart. His mom was an extremely miserly woman who wanted her daughter, Winnie, to marry a rich man.

Winnie was a really sweet girl who was constantly under the control of her mother. Later, she meets Gallen and falls in love with him. Since Gallen is the only son of a really rich man, her parents approved strongly of their marriage. Gallen also happens to be Roger and Ka Wah's good friend. He is a pharmacist but later he helps his father in his company.

Lam Kei Yun is Lam Ka Wah and Winnie's second cousin. She came from China and lived with their family, awaiting her uncle to send for her from another country. Unfortunately, her uncle dies, so therefore, no more money is sent to Winnie's mom to support Lam Kei Yun and she is treated very poorly. However, Lam Ka Wah and Winnie are still very nice to her. She dates Roger for a while, but because she could not withstand the resentment of Winnie's mom, she leaves and becomes a prostitute.

Lam Ka Wah and Roger later meet Kathy, a social worker. At first, she mistakens them as perverts but later she becomes good friends with them and dates Roger.

Roger's dad soon dies and leaves him with a bakery. However, his evil aunt and nephew persuade all of the people working for the bakery that Roger is "not good" and tell them not to work for him. Therefore, Roger is stuck with a bakery, no management skills, and an order that must be fulfilled. With the help of his friends, and niece, he is able to fulfill the order and make the bakery very successful. Roger's bakery becomes very prosperous and he soon opens up more. Ka Wah's mom, however, causes money trouble between the two and he leaves the bakery and opens up his own. Gallen tries to settle the troubles but he isn't successful.

Meanwhile, Roger and Kathy's relationship is ruined by Lam Kei Yun, who has made a sudden appearance back into Roger's life. Although he only perceives her as a friend, she thinks otherwise and stirs up trouble between Roger and Kathy's relationship, finally causing them to break up. Soon, they get back together again and she causes an even bigger rift in Ka Wah and Roger's friendship.

Ka Wah marries Roger's niece and the two are very happy together. However, Roger and Ka Wah's friendship troubles also bring difficulties to their marriage, but they are always quick to make up.

Later, Lam Kei Yun tries to ruin Ka Wah's business and she is successful in doing that. However, contrary to what she expected, her actions caused Roger to reach out and help Ka Wah and soon the two were good friends again and their bakeries were merged into one big company.

Lam Kei Yun's plot falls short and soon her façade is uncovered and Roger breaks up with her. He tries to get back together with Kathy but she refuses him and instead, she heads for the US.

A year or two later, she comes back to Hong Kong and bumps into Ka Wah in the streets. He quickly tells Roger that Kathy is back and urges him to find her. Roger chases Kathy onto the boat and asks her to marry him and she finally agrees.

The end of the series is really cute. Lam Ka Wah and his wife had two little boys, Gallen and Winnie had twin girls and Roger and Kathy had a little boy. They are all walking along the dock towards their yacht.
