This series takes place in the early 1900s (I think sometime around 1925-35...before and during the time Japan invaded China).

"Su Lian" and "Chan Yee Hwei" are both college students. "Yee Hwei" organized a dance at the college and invited her brother "Fei Pu" and his friend "Gu San". "Fei Pu" fell in love with "Su Lian" the moment he saw her on the dance floor. They were introduced to each other and "Gu San" liked "Su Lian" also. "Fei Pu" went to find "Su Lian" the next day. "Su Lian" also ran into "Gu San" at a flute store and they both liked the same flute...however, "Su Lian" let "Gu San" buy it since he saw it first.

Soon after, "Su Lian" returns home. Her dad is robbed that night and killed. He left huge debts behind and "Su Lian" had no choice but to marry a rich, old man and become his 4th wife. "Fei Pu" was shocked when he saw that "Su Lian" was going to marry his father. He was very sad and got drunk the night of their marriage. "Gu San" also couldn't sleep that night.

Many things happened as "Su Lian" tried to adapt to this new family. These were the family members: Grandmother; Father (man of the house); 1st wife and her 2 children--"Fei Pu" and "Yee Hwei"; evil 2nd wife her 3 children--son "Fei Yu" and 2 daughters; 3rd wife and her son--"Fei Lan". The 2nd wife and her 2 daughters tried to cause problems for "Su Lian". The 2nd wife even went as far as making "Su Lian" lose her baby. "Su Lian" became good friends with the 3rd wife. The 1st wife always kept to herself and avoided problems.

Although it took a while, "Fei Pu" eventually got over "Su Lian". He was finally able to find true love in a nurse named "Ling Dee". "Su Lian" and "Gu San" had feelings for each other but had to supress them. He was eventually forced by his father to marry "Yee Hwei", who had always been in love with him. However, "Gu San" couldn't bring himself to love her and their marriage was very unstable.

The 2nd wife and husband eventually found out that the 3rd wife had another man outside. The husband ordered servants to throw the 3rd wife into the water in the garden and drowned her. Because "Su Lian" witnessed this shocking incident, she became very frightened and went crazy. Later on, the husband drowned the 2nd wife also.

The entire family eventually broke off with the father/husband because of his actions. The family (except the grandma) moved to Shanghai to make a living as they now had no more money. "Su Lian" never recovered but the family took care of her...she acted like a child most of the time now. "Gu San" finally realized that he did have feelings for his wife "Yee Hwei" and went to find her in Shanghai...
