This series stars Athena Chu Yan as a headstrong, rebellious girl. She is the second daughter in a family of five. The female who plays her older sister is actually the female lead. Well, this is an olden day series. As with most Mandarin/Taiwan, there's a lot of crying, etc.

Athena's family owes a rich man's family a lot of money. The rich man's second son, a truly evil man, goes to collect debts and sets their house on fire when he finds out Athena's dad isn't home. He beats up the little kids (Athena's younger sisters and brother) and slaps Athena when she tries to stand up to him. Athena's dad comes home in the middle of this and is horrified at the scene. Meanwhile, Athena's youngest sister (she's only like 6 or 7 yrs old) runs back into the house to get her doll and her dad runs after her and is burned. He dies from his burns and Athena vows revenge for her family.

Athena and her family are now on their own. Her older sister and her go and sing for a restaurant to try and make a living. They meet the villian's older brother who turns out to be the nicest guy and he helps them out and starts to date Athena's older sister. They go through a lot of problems because he is the villian's brother. However, they are together at the end.

Athena dates the villian's older's brother's friend and they get married. The ending is a happy one. The villian realizes that's he's been wrong and he becomes a monk. Athena and her sister are happily married.

I've left out a lot of details b/c it's difficult summarizing w/o names. Sorry for the confusion. This series isn't that great b/c it's really sad but if you like sad serials, this might be right for you.
