The Unexpected was a great suspense/drama series. Damian Lau returns to Hong Kong with his wife Chan Mei Kei and their son because his father (Woo Fung) is hospitalized. He is a college professor with two PhD's and a very intelligent man. Upon his return to Hong Kong, he meets up with his two friends from college, Bowie Lam and Cheung Kwok Keung. Bowie is a cop who is very bitter about the death of his older brother because the killer was never caught. However, he maintains a humorous personality. Cheung Kwok Keung is a coroner, but his true side is dark and evil.

The reason why this series was so interesting from the start was that it began as a mystery which drew the audience into the series (kind of like Detective Investigation Files where the audience has to guess the killer). What happens is that Damian's family moves in next to Cheung Kwok Keung. One day, Chan Mei Kei and her son were outside videotaping the scenery and they ran into Cheung Kwok Keung in the woods. He believed that she saw something that she shouldn't have (he thought she saw him burying the guy he just killed) and kills her later that day (the audience doesn't know who the killer is though).

Well, Damian gets worried about his wife and goes out to search for her but can't find her so in essence, he thinks she's missing. Cheung Kwok Keung tells his girlfriend to go shopping, using Chan Mei Kei's credit cards so that the cops will assume that she's still alive. Damian follows the clues that he leaves behind and tries to investigate his wife's disappearance. When Damian begins to suspect Keung's girlfriend, he kills her too, making it seem as though she committed suicide.

Esther plays the role of Bowie's girlfriend. She works as a lab assistant under Damian. Because she feels sorry for Damian, she helps take care of his son after school. Because she witnessed Keung's girlfriend burning her clothes, Keung pushes Esther off the roof. Luckily, her injury isn't too serious.

Maggie plays the role of a rich man's daughter. She falls in love with and marries Bowie later on in the series after Esther breaks up with him. Esther falls for Damian, who doesn't accept her love at first.

Besides the relationships, the story goes on to unveil the true murderer and later we find out that Maggie's father was the real culprit behind everything. The series has a happy ending with Maggie and Bowie being together and Esther leaving with Damian and his family back to the US.
