The hero, Nicholas de Brabant, is an 800 year old, angst ridden vampire who has abandoned his vampiric ways. He seeks to regain his mortality. In the present he is known as Nick Knight and he suffers remorse for his past ways and hopes to atone for his evil ways by working as a detective in the Toronto Police Department (on the night shift) and using his skills for good.

The only mortal who knows his secret, is Dr Natalie Lambert, a forensic pathologist. She searches for a cure for Nick's 'condition'. They both share a mutual attraction that cannot be fulfilled.

He tries to keep his secret from his partner, Donald Schanke.

However, Lucien LaCroix his seductive 2000 year old master, the vampire who sired him back in 1228, disapproves of his protégés good intentions. LaCroix is unrepentant of his ways and his goal is to convert Nick Knight back to the ways of evil.
