If you liked Jaws, or Jurassic Park then you'll like Deep Blue Sea just as much. Mindless killing by some large sharks. And a story of man messing with the genetic make-up of God's creation, and learning that the double-helix is nothing to be tampered with.
Dr. Susan McAlister (Saffron Burrows) is a scientist about to make a breakthrough in finding a cure for Alzhiemers Disease, using a protien complex extracted from the brain of a shark. This is because a shark is not affected by cancer, or degenerative brain disease, like Alzhiemers. To get enough of the protien complex, she had to use gene therapy to make the shark's brain larger. As a side effect, the sharks got smarter. Take a several thousand kilogram mako shark that that loves the taste of blood, give it a will, and what do you have? Why don't you find out?
There were some aspects of the movie that dissappointed me. Samuel L. Jackson played a major investor in the project, and he is killed off as soon as an opportunity presents. Michael Rapaport plays the facility engineer, and he is killed. Both were major characters, which was a little frustrating. And the way they died was stupid, because it could have been easily avoided. LL Cool J, who plays Preacher, the cook, had only minor parts until the sharks got loose. Then, and only then, did he become important. He got out of a fix twice, and the other characters could have had just as much as a chance as him, but they didn't get it. And, the part that really made me foam, maybe because I am a Saffron Burrows fan, but it probably was the way it happened, was that she had been killed off in the stupidest fashion. While trying to kill a shark, she jumps in the water to attract it. And she gets killed. They could have killed the shark without making that happen. If you see the movie, you'll see what I mean. Urgh.
That was more a personal preference, that main characters stay alive, but it was still frustrating. Still, once you get around that, the movie really did get it's point across. Oh, and the research data? Destroyed. Bummer. If you like seeing people getting chewed up, go see it. Otherwise, there really wasn't much of a point. Twice was enough for me.
