The year was 2000 when it happened, Second impact occurred.  It wiped out most of the population of earth.  After that, the first and second angel attacks occurred. An establishment by the name of NERV was created to destroy the Angels.  Using fighting machines called Evangelions, they wiped out their opponents.  14 years later, the 3rd angel attack.  That's where the story of Shinji Ikari begins.
