Eyes of Scali Blue 1/5 By Nita Durham a.k.a. Nita Dee @ AOL.COM Disclaimer: The Commish and its characters belong to Stephen J. Cannell and ABC Productions. Special thanks to Lancer 4120 for coming up with a good villian name for me and for his encouragement. ----------------------------------------------------------------- "I'm waking up...I don't want to wake up--EVER. I'm not ready to face what I already know in my heart. Tony's dead, the baby is dead, I will never be able to walk again--there is no way Dr. Dillard can repair the damage again." In a hospital bed in ICU at Wilshire Memorial Hospital, Cyd Madison Scali, mayor of the city of Eastbridge and married to its Police Commisioner, allowed these thoughts to tumble through her drug induced brain. "Why did we argue that morning? It seemed so unimportant now, so trivial. How was I to know Tony had to kill a woman in self defense--he certainly didn't tell me. Oh God, I was just trying....just trying to do what a mother would do...I failed at that too. I couldn't protect Sara when she needed to be protected and I am trying to protect her too much now. I'm certainly no Rachel. Rachel never would have let Sara be taken by aliens, she wouldn't have been so free with David so that now all he wants to do is party (but isn't that typical when you are 19-- I certainly did my share of it) and she would understand when Tony needed space." "God, what am I going to do without Tony...I need him so much." ----------------------------------------------------------------- One day earlier. Morning. Tony Scali came up the stairs of his Eastbridge home a tired and downhearted man that early morning in June. There had been a bank robbery that had gone into a hostage situation. Things had gotten sticky and when that woman pulled her gun and fired he was only returning fire in reflex. The woman was killed and her two companions had fled. No one else, thankfully, had been injured. Walking into the bedroom, Tony saw his wife Cyd asleep in bed... with Sara, Tony's daughter from his first marriage. Tony and his first wife Rachel had been very strict with both of their children about staying in their own beds at night. Rachel had read studies which stated that children who took to sleeping with parents often had emotional problems later in life. "Sara, honey...get up. Your bedroom is down the hall." Tony said to Sara. "Hi, Daddy...I'm sorry. The gray funny men came to get me in my sleep again and I needed Cyddie to comfort me." Sara said yawning, dragging a blanket with her. Cyd waited until Sara had left the room until she turned on Tony. "Tony, Sara was scared. She woke up screaming about needles and gray men again..I told her it was okay if she slept with me until you came home." Cyd said angrily as she manuvered her six month pregnant body out of the bed. "Cyd, you know how I feel about it. I don't want Sara to grow up cowardly. Rachel never let David sleep with us past two and she didn't let Sara. Its only because Sara knows she can get away with it that she does it. You should have just gone into the bedroom and told her everything was okay and went back to bed." Tony said tiredly. "David was never kidnapped by Gray men." Cyd said point-blankly. "No, but he was kidnapped by the Mob once." Tony said. "Rachel and I had a good talk with him and he never let it bother him." "For one day, Tony...not three months." Cyd said. "Still, I don't think its a good idea to let Sara sleep with you." Tony said. "David home yet?" "No, I think he is at the dorms." Cyd said. "Or with Ginger Nussbaum--Damnit! What is with that boy? All he ever does is party..we should have left his bedroom upstairs instead of moving him into your old room. That way we'd know when he comes in." Tony said. "Tony--he is 19 years old. So he likes to have a good time. School is out and David is working this summer at the Movie Theatre..I just don't see what the problem is." Cyd said, getting fed up with her husband's attitude. "Cyd, do you know what your problem is? You spoil these kids... Sara and David both know how to get you to give into anything. I need to take charge of them. Rachel would roll over in her grave if she knew that both of them are getting away with....." Tony began. "Damnit, Tony! I AM NOT RACHEL!!! Yes, I give things and let David and Sara have their way about things..poor kids--they've been through so much. And when this one comes," Cyd pointed to her swollen belly, "I will give it what it wants too." "Not if I have anything to do with it. You get a good salary from the City and this dividend check and that dividend check from the "Madison Foundation"..money can't buy those kids happiness. They should have grown up poor like I did..then they would appreciate things." Tony said, getting worked up. "And I grew up a poor little rich girl and I don't!" Cyd spat at her husband. "Well, sometimes you don't think. I've seen the way you shop-- you've got a closet full of maternity clothes that you can only wear three more months. And we had all of Sara's things from when she was a baby--you didn't have to go out and buy a new furniture set." Tony said. "Maybe I don't want my baby to have hand-me-downs." Cyd said, throwing on her clothes. "Nothing wrong with hand-me-downs..I wore my share of them." Tony said. "No..but we can afford to provide for this child--and the other two." Cyd said as she put on her make up. "I hope you are planning to get some sleep..you look bad." Cyd said. "No, I am just here to change clothes. I've got to get back to work." Tony said. "You are trying to kill yourself, Tony..let Paulie take over today. When I was Commisioner at Oak Port I designated duties around..I didn't feel a need to be there all the time." Cyd said. "Cyd, you run the mayor's office and I will run the police department--okay?" Tony growled. "I will." Cyd said coldly. "And Tony, I hope to God you get some sleep--you are certainly cranky this morning." "So are you." Tony yelled back. "Yes, well, I am carrying around this baby with a bad back." Cyd said. "You are trying to kill YOURSELF, Cyd. Why don't you take a leave of absense--or better yet-let Paul Leone, your City manager, have your job. You don't need the money." Tony said. "Because I like to work." Cyd said. "And that is where I am going to now...you get some sleep." "I like to work too, Cyd." Tony said. "I will see you tonight Tony." Cyd said angrily. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Getting into her car, Cyd Madison Scali began driving to her office in City Hall. She regretted arguing with Tony--but sometimes that man was so unreasonable. But she could be unreasonable, too. "Thats why the marriage works--for the most part. We are both hopelessly stubborn about what we want and agree so strongly on other points." Cyd thought. Suddenly Cyd felt a hand on her shoulder, grabbing it in a crushing grasp. "Well, Looky here...we've got that Police Commisioner's woman here driving this nice, high dollar car." the man said in Tennessee twang. Cyd looked around--and saw a dirty, smelly man with bad teeth sitting behind her. "Lit' Missy--you just drive this purdy car where Ise tell you too...my brother will want to meet the woman of the man who killed HIS woman." The foul man said. "Feel this?" Cyd felt the barrel of a pistol push against the back of her head. She nodded. "Don't want to have to make you more red-headed than you already are." The man said. "Just keep driving until I say stop." Cyd nodded again. "You said my husband killed your brother's wife?" Cyd whispered. "This marnin'. We'se just wanted to get some money to go back home on..this Yankee livin' ain't fer nobody. Things just got a little out of hand. What does that Italian bastard Scaddi call you?" The man said. "Scali..the last name is Scali. My name is Cyd." Cyd said. "And yours?" "Bubba. And thats all you need to know." Bubba said. "Cyd's not a real woman's name." "Its this real woman's name." Cyd said. "Fair enough." Bubba said. "I want you to turn up here." Cyd turned the car onto a little two lane road that headed out of Eastbridge towards the rural areas. After driving awhile, Bubba had her turn again..this time onto a dirt road. The dirt road headed upwards until finally stopping in front of a rusty trailer that had seen better days. "Git out..wese home now." Bubba said. Another man, this one just as dirty but with a face clearly marked with grief and revenge came out on the porch of the trailer. "Good job, Bubba...the Bible says 'an eye for an eye.' This evening, that Yankee bastard Scaddi will be weeping and wailing over one of his own." The other man said. End of Part One. ----- Eyes of Scali Blue 2/5 See Disclaimer in Part One. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Sara Scali came in from playing over at her friend Kim Albright's house a sad little girl. David Scali, her older brother, was in the kitchen making a cheese sandwich. He had just woken up at 11:30 and now was practicing dance steps he had learned at the Alpha Mu Delta party last night. "Hi, David--what are you doing?" Sara asked. "Making sandwiches--want one?" David asked. Sara nodded. "David, can I asked you a question?" she asked her big brother. "Sure." David said. "Are Daddy and Cyddie going to get a divorce?" Sara asked, her blue eyes filled with tears. "Divorce? With a baby coming? Get real, Sara." David said. "That's what Mrs. Albright said. I told her that Daddy and Cyddie had a big fight this morning. Mrs. Albright said 'well, that was to be expected--Cyd Madison only wanted Tony Scali as a conquest and that baby is her trophy.'" Sara said. "Sara, listen to me. I know that Kim Albright is your best friend in the whole world, but her mother is the biggest gossip in Eastbridge. Dad and Cyd are not getting a divorce..they love each other too much.'" David said. "But they had a fight." Sara said, now letting her tears flow. "Married people have fights, Sara. Its because they love each other that they allow themselves to have opinions. Why, even Dad and Mom had some battles." David said. "So I can go back and tell Mrs. Albright that Daddy and Cyddie are going to stay married forever--right?!" Sara said with confidence. "Sure you can. And when the baby comes, Mrs. Albright can babysit!" David said, and both Scali children had a good laugh. "Hi kids." The tired voice of Tony Scali came around the corner. "Sara, also tell Mrs. Albright that she need not worry about my marriage." "Okay!" Sara said, taking her cheese sandwich and making a bee-line across the yard to the Albright residence. After Sara left, David turned to his father. "Dad, I saw the news at Noon...I'm sorry." David said. "So am I. I wish Cyd was here..she'd understand how I feel." Tony said. "I am going to have to take her out tonight to make up for coming in like such an Ass this morning." "Where is Cyd, Dad?" David asked. "She's at work. why?" Tony said. "No, she's not. Paul Leone called just before Sara came it...he wanted to know if she was sick. She hasn't been at work all day." David said as he watched the concern grow in his father's face. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Cyd Madison Scali sat on the lid of a tolet in a bathroom that hadn't been clean in many years. After she has been "captured" Bubba and his brother Cletus had locked her in the bathroom-- since it was the only room in the trailer that had a lock on it. "God, its already unbearably hot for June. This reminds me of my wedding day----" Cyd's eyes flashed open. Today was her first anniversary! Her first anniversary--and she had battled with her bridegroom this morning! ----------------------------------------------------------------- "Well, now you've got her..whatcha gonna do with her?" Bubba asked his brother. "Kill her." Cletus replied. "Now Cletus, do be reasonable. You can't jus' kill her...and she is expecting a baby." Bubba said. He had only gone along with the robbery attempt because his brother assured him it would go without a hitch..now he was involved in a kidnapping. "Husband should have thought of that before he shot Velma." Cletus said. "You know, Cletus..she the mayor of Eastbridge. We might be able to get a pretty penny for her."Bubba said. Cletus thought about that and nodded. "You're right..why kill her? I think I'd rather kill her husband. We'll get the money from him and then kill him." Cletus said. "I like that idea." "I'll get up some magazines and we'll make up a ransom note..." Bubba began. "Bubba..shut up! I ain't gonna waste no time with a ransom note.. I am going to call her husband. I'll bet that number one on this here cell phone in her purse is to her house." Cletus said, pushing the button. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Tony Scali had just stepped out of the shower when he heard the phone ring. Picking up the telephone in the bathroom, he answered. "Scali." He said, expecting it to be work. "Well, if it isn't high and mighty po'leese Commisioner. I got something that belongs to you..think you might want it back.." Cletus said. "Who is this..tell me, you son of a bitch!" Tony growled. "You friends from the Commerce Bank..remember us. You shot my woman...and now its time to pay the piper." Cletus said. "Do you have my wife?" Tony demanded. "Well, now..what does your wife look like? Is she a good looking redhead with a big baby belly? That's who we've got. Got a man's name too..Sid?" Cletus said, enjoying his revenge. "What have you done with her? I want to talk with her!" Tony screamed into the phone. "Talk ain't cheap, asshole. I will call you back later." Cletus said, hanging up the phone. "God, no." Tony moaned "Not Cyd, not now." Using his keen investigator skills, Tony called the cellular phone company and had the call traced. "1455 Mountain Trace Road in rural Eastbridge..got it." Tony said. Then, he called the office. "Paulie..send some cops over to 1455 Mountain Trace Road..my wife has been kidnapped.". End of Part Two ----- Eyes of Scali Blue 3/5 See Disclaimer in part one. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Cyd Madison Scali heard the roar of many sirens coming up the road towards the trailer. "Good." Cyd thought. "Now we can end this matter, I can apologize to Tony, and we can enjoy the rest of the day together." Many car doors slammed and 35 cops jumped out. Leading the charge was their Commisioner. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Bubba and Cletus jumped up and ran to the door, shotguns in hand. "Cletus, you idiot....I tol' you that we should have made a ransom note...they done tracked us down because of that cell phone." Bubba said. "Shut up, you son of a bitch. I know what I'm doing..." Cletus spat at his brother. "Just like you did yesterday at the bank." Bubba argued back. "This is the Eastbridge Police. Put your weapons down and come out...no one will be harmed." Tony yelled through a megaphone. Cletus answered by spraying the ground with bullets. "Take cover!" Tony yelled back to the other police officers. Tony began to head back to the front of the trailer alone, despite Paulie's warnings. "Are you Cletus and Bubba Kincaid? I know who you are...I believe you are holding my wife. I want to see her." Tony said into the megaphone. Cletus came out on the porch. "I tol' you before, talk ain't cheap, asshole." Cletus growled. "What do you want..we can negotiate." Tony said through the megaphone. "Well, now you are talking. I reckon it'd be worth it to you and your city to get that red head back. I want a quarter of a million dollars in unmarked bills, safe passage for my brother and me and one more thing....I want my wife's body in a solid gold casket and matching hearse to take her back to Tennessee to bury her." Cletus said. "Let me see my wife first..I want to see Cyd." Tony said. "Bubba--get Red out of the bathroom. I guess it won't hurt anything for him to look at her." Cletus said to his brother. Bubba did as told. Taking Cyd by the right wrist, he lead her to the porch. "No funny business, Miz Scarlett." Bubba whispered to Cyd. Cyd walked out on the porch. "Tony..." she said before Cletus shoved her back into the trailer. "You was to LOOK AT, not talk to." He said to Cyd. Tony stood there with his heart in his mouth. Cyd was in danger. It was funny...even when she had been just one of his cops to him it always seemed to affect him whenever she was in danger. And now..the stakes were higher, much higher. Cyd was his wife whom he loved greatly who was carrying his child. "What do you want? Answer me, you hillbilly!" Tony shouted without using the megaphone. "I told you--get me those things I want by six o'clock tonight or I get trigger happy." Cletus said. "Cletus..lets talk about it. We can't possibly get that amount of money, your safe passage, or even a solid gold casket and hearse by six o'clock. Let Cyd go and we'll discuss it." Tony said. "What..that we can go to jail? That my wife can be buried here in this God forsaken part of the world? You are a fool." Cletus said. "I understand how you feel. I, too, lost my wife. She was killed violently too." Tony said, trying desperately to reason with him. Inside the trailer, Cyd's heart sank. Rachel, always Rachel. She had been a fool to believe that she could make Tony as happy as his first wife had. "What are you, a fuckin' Morman?" Cletus asked, laughing. "No, Cyd is my second wife..and I love her. But I was married before to a woman who was killed." Tony said. "By a trigger happy cop?" Cletus said. "No, a mad bomber. But I know what you feel..and I am truly sorry. I didn't see her until it was too late." Tony said. When Tony said that, something in Cletus shifted. Anger took over his face where only grim determination had been. "We had to leave her like a dog in the road to die!!!!" Cletus yelled and then he did something no one was prepared for. He opened fire, shooting Tony Scali twice in the chest at close range. Tony fell instantly, dropping the megaphone. The other cops, lead by Paulie, ran towards their fallen leader, but more gun blasts from Cletus's two shot guns stopped them cold. "He left my woman to die in the road like a dog. Now he can lie there in the dirt and die like a dog, too." Cletus said. "No one comes near him unless they want to die, too." And he reloaded his gun to prove the point. Inside the trailer, Cyd fell to her knees and moaned hard, tears flowing. She allowed herself to be in this position only a few seconds before something strong and primal entered her body. She could get help for Tony if she could get Cletus off the porch and to turn his attentions to her. Getting up, she began to walk to the door of the trailer. Outside, she saw Tony's body convulse as if having a seizure. "Whar do you think you are goin'?" Bubba asked and was greeted by a violent thrust of Cyd's elbow. Bubba knelt down in pain. She calmly walked out the door and towards Cletus. "Bubba, why ain't you got this woman locked up...." he began before Cyd began slugging him in the face as hard as her six month pregnant body would allow. "Why you little Red Headed Bitch..." Cletus growled and took his rifle butt, jabbing it into Cyd's swollen belly. Cyd screeched with pain but nothing would stop her. She knew that by getting Cletus off the porch the paramedics could get to Tony and maybe it wouldn't be too late. Cletus forced Cyd back into the trailer. "Ah ain't in the habit of lettin' no woman knock me around..." he yelled as he began to punch her in the face and neck. Cyd took the abuse like a prize fighter. She could hear the commotion outside the trailer. She was getting help for Tony.. her Tony. She could take anything this bastard had to dish out for him. Well, almost anything. Cletus weighted nearly 75 pounds more than Cyd and was able to back her into the wall. Then, using the wall as a prop, he roughly shoved the woman up against it. Cyd suddenly felt her back flair up in a fiery throbbing of pain. Her nerve operation from the horseback riding accident! Cletus had done something to it. Then another frightening sensation. Cyd felt the gush of water down her legs. Cletus had broken her water, too. Cyd fell to the ground, unable to fight any longer. "Git up...git up, Ise say! You want to fight..lets have us a good one!" Cletus said. Bubba came to Cyd's rescue. "Cletus, stop it!! She is a woman." Bubba said. To Cyd he said, "Get up and go back into the bathroom." "I can't." Cyd wimpered. "You can and you will!" Cletus said. Cyd tried to get up, but her legs would no obey her brain commands. "Look, you son of a bitch...I have had back surgery and you've done something to my back. And, I think I am in labor." Cyd said, regaining enough of her bark to let the hillbilly know that Cyd Madison Scali was talking to him. "Well, then..Bubba, you drag her back into the back. I don't want to have to deal with her having a baby while we try to work things out." Cletus said. Bubba gently took a blanket and rolled Cyd onto it. Using the blanket, he dragged the woman into the kitchen. "I think you will find this much cleaner that that old bathroom." Bubba said. "Thank you." Cyd said. Going back out to the living room, Cletus watched as the cops set in for the night. "Well, I had wanted that bastard to die in the dirt like a dog. That little filly shore has some fire to her." Cletus said. "Doesn't matter, Cletus. I think you got what you wanted. I heard one of those cops hollering something about getting a priest to meet them at the hospital. I think he's dead or dang near close." Bubba said. Overhearing this from the kitchen, Cyd laid her head down and cried for her husband of one year. End of Part Three. ----- Eyes of Scali Blue 4/5 See Disclaimer in Part One. ----------------------------------------------------------------- And thus began the hardest night Cyd Madison Scali would ever have. Pain, pain was all she felt. When she had been in the horseback riding accident three years earlier, there had not been pain like this..only a nothingness. She would have greatly preferred that nothingness to the pain. Both her back and her front were killing her. She couldn't lie in any position and be truly comfortable. And her heart hurt worst of all. "Tony is dead." She kept whispering over and over again, as if to make herself believe. In the front of the trailer, Cletus and Bubba Kincaid sat on a couch looking out the window at the darkened world. All they could see was the police car siren lights which were parked about a half mile away. "Well, Cletus." Bubba finally broke the silence. "Its well past six o'clock. We ain't got no money, no safe passage, and certainly no Golden Hearse and Casket for Velma. What are we going to do now?" Bubba asked. "Shut up, Bubba..don't you see I am trying to think?!" The older man growled at his brother. Bubba grunted and went into the kitchen. "Ma'am, can I do anything for you? Fix you somethin' to eat?" Bubba asked Cyd. "Yes, please...I want you to take my pants off. And my underwear if you can manage it." Cyd said, voice breaking in pain. "Oh, I don't think Ah can do dat...." Bubba said, embarressed. "This isn't a time for modesty, Bubba..I need help." Cyd said. So Bubba took the pants and the panties off...covering Cyd with a blanket in his embarressment. "How old are you, Bubba?" Cyd ask. "20." Bubba answered. "Just a little older than David. Thank you." Cyd whispered. "You fixin' to deliver?" Bubba asked. "I don't know...I have broken my water..that is for sure. It is really too soon..I'm only at about 29 weeks." Cyd said. Then, an idea came into her head. "I can't push this baby out with my back hurt. I already knew that I would have to deliver by C-Section when I became pregnant. Please, Bubba..tell Cletus just to let me go. He's gotten his revenge...I am now a widow with three children to support." Cyd said, using her best performance of pathos to Bubba. "Things shore ain't worked out the way we had expected. We all thought we'd be back in Tennessee by now this time 48 hours ago. My how things change." Bubba said. "In just 12 hours..I had a husband 12 hours ago." Cyd said. "Bubba..just tell Cletus and both of you surrender to Paulie and the other officers. I will even testify in your behalf if you do this.. maybe get you a lighter sentence." "Well..that is the funniest thing Ah ever heard..lighter sentence indeed." Cletus said, coming into the kitchen. "I am going to tell that punk police man who is taking your old man's place that he has until 6:00 a.m. to get me my things I want." Cletus went out on the porch and gave his new demands to Paulie and the other officers. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Bubba Kincaid just couldn't take it anymore. For several hours, Cyd Madison Scali had screamed, moaned, begged, prayed, and cried in the most pitiful tones Bubba had ever heard. "Cletus, wake up!" Bubba said to the sleeping Cletus. "Lets get her some help...she reminds me of the time Bessie the cow couldn't have her baby. Bessie died...please Cletus..I cain't stand hearing her anymore." "Bubba, she is puttin' on. She used to be a cop, too...she knows how to play the game." Cletus said, tired and hung over from the two cases of beer he had drank in the last 24 hours. Bubba walked into the kitchen, where Cyd lay pulled into a ball. Her features in her face resembled something wild and untamed looking. "I wonder who Tony will choose to be with. Rachel or me?" Cyd asked no one in her agony. "Ma'am?" Bubba asked. "I am going to die...I can't take this pain anymore. Please, Bubba, if it is your intention to kill me, go ahead." "What do you mean by who Tony will be with?" Bubba asked. "Tony--will he choose me or Rachel, his first wife....Oh, who am I kidding..Rachel will get it. He's never loved me like he loved her. I was just filling a space. But I love him so..I think I always did..even when I was his cop. You know I almost killed him when we first met? He had gone undercover and had his cover blown. I told the man I would kill him..almost did..missed him by only inches...AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Cyd screamed with a new wave of pain. Bubba Kincaid was a boy who had come from the mountains of Tennessee. But watching a woman trying to have a baby made him become a man. Walking into the living room, Bubba announced to Cletus. "Cletus, it is over. I am not going to listen to that poor woman any longer. I'm surrendering." Bubba said. "Like Hell, you are!" Cletus screamed, grabbing his brother's arm. "They are not going to give us what we want...and there ain't no sense in continuing this thing and letting that woman die in there. Its over...." Bubba said. "Its over when Ah sez its over!" Cletus said. Bubba took a shotgun off the coffee table. "Cletus, either we end this now or I will end you." Bubba said. Cletus also picked up his shotgun. "That's big talk for a runt of a boy." Cletus said. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Dawn was just breaking when Stan came by to relieve Paulie. "You know, Paulie..this is killing the boss. He's having to sit in that van and not be out here trying to free Cyd." Stan said. "Well, it was his idea. He felt that by letting the Kincaids believe that they had killed him we would have a better chance of getting Cyd out of this." Paulie said. "Bullet Proof Vests are a wonderful invention, aren't they?" Stan said to Paulie. "The best." Paulie answered back. Suddenly, two shots rang out from the trailer. "Shit, its not 6:00 a.m. yet." Paulie said. "Storm the trailer NOW!!!" The SWAT Team lined up around the trailer. "Come out with your hands up..or we will come in." Paulie said in the megaphone. Bubba walked out on the porch of the trailer and threw his shotgun down. "Yall come on in and get her..and my brother too. Its over." Bubba said. As a team of paramedics stormed the trailer, Bubba was taken to a squad car and saw Tony Scali running his middle aged body up the hill. "Commissioner Scali." Bubba said. "What is it, you hillbilly Son of a Bitch? I've got a wife to see." Tony said angrily. "She's okay..or will be. Would you do me a favor?" Bubba asked. "No." Tony said, turning to run again. "Sir, listen to me. That little red headed filly in that trailer loves you. You need to show her that you love her too." Bubba said. This stopped Tony short. "Cyd knows how much I love her..why do you say that?" Tony asked, anxious to get up to the trailer. "She told me last night that if you had to make the choice between her and someone named Rachel, you'd choose Rachel, no question. I just wanted you to know that I have a great deal of respect for Cyd Scali..any woman who'd put their life and the life of their unborn child on the line for a man is worth her weight in diamonds. Its just something I want you to think about." Bubba said. Suddenly, an ambulance went by, siren screaming. Stan came running down the hill. "Sir, what kept you? We had to send Cyd on to the hospital..she is in labor." Stan said. "I'm on my way." Tony said, still stunned by Bubba's revelation. End of Part Four ----- Eyes of Scali Blue 5/5 See Disclaimer in Part One. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Siren blaring, Tony Scali made the trip to Wilshire Memorial Hospital in record time. He quickly ran up to the third floor Labor and Delivery area. "I am here...where is Cyd?...Where is my wife..." The out of breath Commisioner said to a nurse. "Mr. Scali..please get dressed in a surgical uniform. They have taken your wife into surgery..the baby is in distress and they are going to deliver via Cesarian." The nurse said as she handed Tony a dressing gown. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Thirty minutes later, Tony Scali stood in the background as a team of surgeons and medical staff worked on his wife. "I am a lousy father." Tony thought to himself. "I didn't make it to David's birth, barely to Sara's,. and now barely to this one. And I have put this one in danger." "Okay, pull the baby out." Dr. Mitchell said to the head nurse. The nurse did just that..and a tiny child, covered in his mother's blood and still wrapped in its cord appears. "And we have.....a baby boy! Time is now...." Dr. Mitchell asked. "7:14 A.M. and this is June 16." The nurse said. "Okay, okay..lets get this little fella cleaned up and into the Intensive Care unit. His weight is a little over three pounds. But he is breathing on his own..he's a fighter all right. Mr. Scali...come over here and see your son before we have to send him to the unit." Dr. Mitchell called. Tony walked over to the child. Tiny thing he was...a little bigger than a bird. And his hair..what there was of it..was as red as his mothers. Tony smiled..he had wanted a redhead, just as its mother had wanted the baby to have his eyes..."eyes of Scali blue" as she had put it looking into them during one of their love-making sessions. Then Tony looked at Cyd. She had been put under in the ambulance..the pain was just too great for her. Cyd's face was horribly brused up and her nose was broken. Her redhair was a tangled mess..she had planned on having it cut short the very next week to accommodate the birth. "Oh Cyd.." Tony whispered. "I've really made a mess of things, haven't I." ----------------------------------------------------------------- Cyd was still unconsious several hours later when Tony Scali left her side for a minute to get a bite to eat. Walking out of the OB/GYN ICU, he encountered Lucille, his long time secretary. "God, you are a mess! When is the last time you slept, Commissioner Scali?" Lucille asked in her no nonsense manner. "Three days ago. Would you like to join me in the cafeteria for some lunch?" Tony asked. He needed to talk to someone that would understand--and tell him the truth. He knew Lucille was just the person for that job. Once in the cafeteria, Tony nibbled at some french fries and drank coffee flavored in vanilla..a habit Lucille has given him. "Lucille, can I ask you something?" Tony said to his secretary. "Ask away." Lucille said bluntly. "Do you think Cyd is happy married to me?" Tony said. "God, yes!!! That woman loves you, man...why are you asking that?" Lucille snapped. Sometimes men could be so stupid when it came to love. "Well, do you think I--well, Lucille--do you think I compare Cyd to Rachel much?" Tony asked. "Yes I do." Lucille answered back straightforwardly. Tony grimiced. Just what he didn't want to hear. But Lucille would tell him the truth..and that is what he needed. "How do I do that?" Tony asked. Lucille rolled her eyes..men were incredibly stupid when it came to love. "Okay, Commisioner. I am going to lay it on the line for you--SO YOU CAN UNDERSTAND IT." Lucille said, making sure the last part of the sentence carried the meaning. "Whose house did Cyd move into? Rachel's. Whose family is Cyd trying to keep together? Rachel's. Whose bed is she sleeping in? Rachel's. I bet you even have the same mattress set you and Rachel used to sleep on. And I have noticed that you always push Rachel's child rearing methods off on Cyd..'Rachel used to say this' or 'Rachel did it this way'. Tony, I know you loved Rachel, but you owe it to Cyd to let her rest in peace. Let Cyd do what she wants." Lucille told the man straightforwardly. "I just felt that Rachel knew things..being a teacher and all. Cyd isn't used to that. Her line of expertise was law enforcement." Tony said. "And how is Cyd supposed to learn it? Tony, let her make her own mistakes...that way she can learn from them." Lucille said, then smiled. "I bet I hit the nail on the head with that mattress remark." "We had just bought that set the summer Rachel was killed..." Tony said, stopping short. Doing it again. "I remember..I also know that you can be incredibly cheap when the need arises." Lucille said. "So, I sell the house and never bring up Rachel's name to Cyd again." Tony said. "No, Commisioner! Rachel was Cyd's friend, too. I am just telling you what I think about the situation. It is up to you to correct it." Lucille said. Tony rose from the table. "I need to get back to Cyd." Tony said, and he excused himself. "Stupid man." Lucille thought as he walked away. ----------------------------------------------------------------- So Tony Scali sat in a room in the OB/GYN Intensive Care unit watching his wife sleep. She was hooked to so many machines..just like when she was hurt in her horseback riding accident. "I love Cyd...I loved Rachel. Why can't I just let one go and give my love unquestionabily to the one that is with me now?" Tony thought. "So help me God, I will never throw Rachel up to her again as long as I live. And we can move..our house is getting too small anyway." Suddenly, Tony noticed a stirring in the bed. Cyd was waking up. "No, I don't want to wake up yet...I don't want to wake up-- ever." Cyd mumbled. Tony moved closer to the bed. "Cyd..Cyd, its me..Tony." Tony said. Cyd's eyes opened at once. Tony was horrified to see how bloodshot they were..she had really taken some punishment for him. God in Heaven, how he loved Cyd Madison Scali. "Tony.....I'm not dreaming..you are here?" Cyd whispered weakly. "Yes, my love, its me." Tony said, pushing his hand through her hair. "But you were shot..." Cyd said. "An act..you yourself once compared me to Al Pacino." Tony smiled. "Thank God...The baby?" Cyd asked, fear in her voice. "Cyd..we have a son. Small, but with red hair..and I think he's going to have my eyes." Tony said. "A son..with eyes of Scali blue...just like Rachel told me when I got married." Cyd said. "Lets not talk about Rachel, okay?" Tony said. "My legs?" Cyd asked. "The doctor said that when you've recovered from the C-Section, he will operate to correct your back. The pain was good..it just meant that the nerves are working." Tony said. "Rachel--I was there for her when Sara was born. I wish she could be here for this...." Cyd said. "Cyd..I want to tell you something...I love you. I want to build you a house to your specifications, you can buy as much furniture as you want. And Sara can sleep with us until she's 21!" Tony said. "Tony, we've got a house. And furniture. And you're right..Sara can feel just as safe with us being down the hall as she can in the same room." Cyd said. "But we can get a better one..one you've created." Tony said. "Tony Scali..listen to me. I am a very happy woman. All I want is you and the kids and the new kid..God, Tony..what are we going to name him?" ----------------------------------------------------------------- "I introduce to the world our child--Jacob Madison Scali." This was the proud voice of Tony Scali as he brought his son home from the hospital three months later. Walking by his side, Cyd Scali smiled..her legs nearly back to normal. "Tony...how are Bubba and Cletus Kincaid enjoying prison?" Cyd asked, knowing that Tony had taken them up to the State Prison the day before. "Bubba is being a man about it..his sentence is less due to his helping you and ending the hostage crisis. Cletus, he just sits and stares." Tony said. "Just got in over their heads..I do hope Cletus learns something from this. I believe Bubba already has." Cyd said, laying her head on her husband's shoulder (no small feat--Cyd being slightly talller than Tony). "God, I love that kid's eyes..they are just like yours." Cyd smiled. "Eyes of Scali Blue." Tony agreed. The End
