All Grown-Up
At first glance, it's easy to see why some fans have a problem separating Neve Campbell from her TV counterpart, Julia Salinger. Both are quiet, reserved and seemingly shy. And, obviously, both are strikingly beautiful.

But Julia is the one who suffers much Angst--teen and otherwise--each Wednesday night at 8 on Fox's Party of Five. And Campbell, at a mature 22, could probably teach Julia--who has suffered from the loss of her parents and last season's teen pregnancy, which ended in miscarriage--a thing or two about growing up.

This season, the show's third, Campbell expects Julia's growing pains to be even more evident.

"I think they're hoping to have some changes in her, and have her realize maybe she didn't have it all together like she thought she did," says the actress.

"This year is really going to be about her coming into her own, and finding confidence in herself again. And trying to define what her version of love can be."

Campbell says that while growing up in Canada, she had her share of tribulations. She says she was the least popular kid in school. Really. ("They even had a song about me, and how ugly I was," she insists.") She found solace in dance and theater. At 15, she made her professional acting debut in the Toronto premiere of "Phantom of the Opera."

"When I look back on it now, I'm so glad that the one thing that I had in my life was my belief that everything in life is a learning experience, whether it be positive or negative," Campbell says. "If you can see it as a learning experience, you can turn any negative into a positive."

As for her own version of love, Campbell has found that, too.

The actress married fellow Canadian actor Jeff Colt after wrapping the show's first season. The two had dated for five years, and successfully sustained the relationship long-distance when she moved to Los Angeles to do "Party."

Currently, Campbell is in the process of buying a house, and further developing her career. Afraid of being pigeonholed by "Party," she has been actively pursuing film roles.

Earlier this year she co-starred in "The Craft" playing a teen witch. Next up is her headlining role in "Scream" a psychological horror flick by Wes ("Nightmare on Elm Street") Craven. Courtney ox, Drew Barrymore and David Arquette co-star in the film, which is due out at Christmas.

Campbell also recently inked a deal that will allow her to executive-produce a telefilm, and which will also, she hopes, move her closer to her goal of directing.

For now, though, she's still best known by her fans as Julia. And Campbell has managed to find the silver lining in that, too.

"I'm just lucky that I play a semi-kind character," she says with a laugh. "Because I can't imagine playing some evil character, and walking down the street and meeting those people who don't differentiate."

When Party of Five was being cast, it was the role of Julia Salinger that was the hardest to fit...until Neve Campbell walked into Fox's offices... and was signed on the spot. Toronto-born Neve, 22 (pronounced like "rev") was destined to act. Her father's a drama teacher and both her mother and older brother Christian are actors (her mom now runs a yoga studio).

Although Julia is seven years Neve's junior, Neve can relate to the drastic changes Julia faces 'cos she also experienced a rocky upbringing. Her parents divorced when she was a baby, and both remarried and divorced again. "It wasn't a horrible situation, but your forced to grow up a little more quickly," Neve says. "I like playing Julia because she rings true. I was like Julia - never fitted in." In fact, Neve swears she was a dag at school. "I was pretty much a loser. I had absolutely no friends."

But the Neve of today is another story.

She's a confident young woman who's down-to-earth about Party of Five and happily married - she wed her childhood sweetheart, Jeff Colt, a year ago. And who could want more in a day's work than hanging out with lush babes Scott Wolf and Matthew Fox? But Neve laughs at the idea of them as sexy. "I feel like they're my brothers. I can't see them in that light." Neve's career is definitely on a roll. This month she stars in the movie The Craft, a tale of four young misfits who use witchcraft to get popular. Neve plays Bonnie, a teenager with a taste for black lipstick whose witches' coven starts getting nasty when one of the witches defects ... But it seems Neve's been casting the right spells over her career lately. "Things have happened quickly for me - and they can stop as quickly as they started. But right now ... I feel wonderful."

So how does it feel to be one of the six reasons to watch television according to Time magazine?
You know what? That was really sweet. I didn't know it happened and people started calling and congratulating me. And all I could think of was, My picture's next to Grandpa Simpson. I mean, Grandpa Simpson's awesome, but you can't take it too seriously.
Is it weird being back in high school?
No, it's kind of wonderful. For me, being able to play out Julia and have these love triangles--these are things I never had. So it's a way for me to live that out without having to go back.
On one of this year's shows your character is hit on by a lesbian. At first Julia freaks out, but then she turns out to be very accepting of this girl. Is that how you are?
That's absolutely how I am. Like race, black or white--I see absolutely no difference. Because for me it's just such a reality:You are human, I am human, let's try to accept one another for whatever we are. It was actually kind of weird for me to flip out about it. I felt like slapping Julia and saying "Relax!" Actually, one of my girlfriends came out after she and I had been friends for a couple of years. And it was really funny because she was so nervous about telling me. And when she told me I was like, "OK, you got a beer?" It doesn't change who you are and what you mean to me.
So have you ever kissed another girl?
Actually, watch The Craft. I just kiss a girl on the lips really quickly; it's not supposed to be sexual or anything.
No Tongue?
No. I've never had a kiss-kiss yet...
Yet?
That will come along at some point.
So is there a Showgirls in your future?
Ha ha! Oh, God...no. I don't think a Showgirls...
No sleeping your way to the top?
Oh, no!!
Tell us about The Craft
It was hard for me because I had just had my honeymoon [Campbell recently married her boyfriend of four years, Jeffrey Colt] and then flew back here and did The Craft. It was a good experience because it really is about four girls becoming empowered...although they abuse it and take it to another level.
What's directory Andy Fleming like?
He's great! He has a really funny, kind of dry sense of humor. We seemed to get along well.
Did he ever fag out on the set?
He sometimes had his little go-offs. He had his moments.
Your character in the film, Bonnie, goes from geek to goddess...
Well, more like freak to goddess...she's geeky, but it's more like freaky than geaky. You don't even want to be near her.
So if you could be any superhero, who would you like to be and why?
[High-pitched laughing squeal] You know who I really used to like? The Wonder Twins! They were awesome! They were always together and their power's together. Superheroes are very powerful, but it could make for a lonely life. Just like this business. So, if you can have someone with you, doing it with you, that's perfect.
Hollywood seems to be going through a remake frenzy right now. If you could star in a remake today, what would it be?
An American in Paris with Gene Kelly. I dance, and there's great dancing in it...
When you're up for Best Actress for An American in Paris, what or who are you going to wear to the Oscars?
Well, I will wear my husband.
It's the new Calvin Klein ad campaign!
Exactly. I will wear Jeffrey. And that's all!
