One of the most agile powerhouses in all of wrestling, Barry Buchanan first gained national recognition in 1997 when he entered the WWF as part of a stable of wrestlers called The Truth Commission, a South African fighter gimmick. He was known as Recon, and along with Sniper, Kurrgan, The Commandant (originally) and The Jackal, The Truth Commission used their tremendous size and power to dominate the opposition. They almost immediately engaged in the group warfare that existed in the WWF at the time, and fought the likes of Disciples of Apocalypse, The Nation of Domination and Los Boricuas pretty frequently. Unfortunately for Buchanan, it soon appeared that the WWF's desire was to focus on Kurrgan, the biggest member of the group. Recon and Sniper soon drifted into the shadows, underwent a brief face turn after leaving The Jackal, and subsequently disappeared from the WWF.
In 1998, Buchanan returned to the WWF with partner Sniper. This time however, they were without their Truth Commission gimmick and wrestled as a regular tag team, with Recon being acknowledged as an American, and Sniper as a French Canadian. Their lack of charisma and suitable look damaged the team, and they were unable to get over, thereby causing them to quickly disappear once again.
Barry stayed determined and eventually made his way to Ohio Valley Wrestling, an organization run by Jim Cornette that works as a "farm system" for the WWF. It was there that he became known as Bull Buchanan, the most powerful and most intimidating competitor in the organization. Bull again caught the eye of WWF officials, and in early 2000 he made his way back to the WWF under the same name. This time he was partnered up with The Big Bossman, and the two became a formidable tag team.
Buchanan's first big moment came at Wrestlemania 2000, when he and the Bossman defeated The Godfather and D-Lo Brown in opening match action. They also scored an impressive win over the very competitive Acolytes at the WWF Judgment Day PPV.
It seemed evident that Bull was the star of the team given his youth, size and strength. He and the Bossman became "hired guns" for Shane McMahon and The Corporation, but it was Bull in particular that played a crucial role in Shane's big win over The Big Show at Judgment Day, injuring The Show's leg in the process.
Tension began to develop between Bull Buchanan and The Big Bossman when mixed signals started leading to losses in tag team matches. It came to a head in June of 2000 when a frustrated Bossman hit Buchanan in the head from behind with his nightstick following the loss. With that, Buchanan set out on his own in the singles ranks of the WWF.
Bull Buchanan continues to display tremendous agility, power and overall wrestling ability, and is considered as a potential big player by WWF officials. His ability to leap from the mat to the top rope in one jump is quite impressive, as is his scissors kick (aka guillotine legdrop) finisher. The future is bright, and the goals are limitless for the big man, and his mediocre days as Recon of The Truth Commission are far behind.
