Lure Presentation

The right equipment, the right spot, and the right time of day will not bring you much muskie success, if you are not using the proper type of lure and lure presentation.  Remember that muskies are guided by water temperature.  The colder the water, the slower their metabolism and vice versa.
They are all but dormant during the winter and eat very little.  When spring comes, a muskie's metabolism is slow and its system is not geared for large amounts of food.  Cranking a large, fast-moving bucktail across its nose will not cause much interest.  The muskie is eating smaller fish and in no metabolic mood to be chasing down fast-moving lures.  Don't waste your time soaking a large sucker either.  A muskie won't even bother to turn its head to look at it.  Small lures retrieved as slowly as possible can save your day.   This is one of the main reasons so many muskies are caught or hooked by walleye fishermen using minnows in the early part of the season.
As the water temperature increases, so does the muskie's metabolism.  During the summer, you are not capable of retrieving a lure faster than a muskie can catch it. Even though a muskie is eating  large amounts of food in the summer, it is not inclined to snap at a lure that drops on its head.  That muskie grew up to be legal without being eaten because it learned to make itself scarce whenever startled by sudden movements or disturbances.
Know your casting distance  and stay within range of the spot you think may hold a muskie.  Cast to the otherside and retrieve your lure over the spot.  This lessens the the effect of a heavy lure splashing into the water and gives the lure time to be working correctly when it moves over the spot.
The heavy lures used for muskies can produce long casts compared with other types of fishing.  Overly long casts can spell trouble.  If a muskie hits your lure way out, you have line stretch and lessened leverage to overcome when you set your hook.  Many muskies have been lost by fishermen because they over-extended their casts.
There are many in's and out's to lure presentation depending on the time of year, area being fished, and type of lure.  Fat Fish Guide Service introduces many of these different techniques in its Instructional Outings.
