Cutting Facts
- objective is to separate an individual cow from the herd
- first recorded cutting contest "for money" was held in
Haskell, Texas, on July 22, 1898 at the Cowboy Reunion
- in a contest, the horse separates a cow from a herd of 15
to 20, and moves it to the center of the arena
- two mounted men called herd holders turn the cow back
towards the herd
- the horse demonstrates skill by preventing the cow from
returning to the herd
- the NCHA (National Cutting Horse Association) governs
cutting, and was formed in March of 1946
- cutting is currently popular with many celebrities,
including (for some reason Cornell Cooperative Extension seems interested in this fact) model Christie Brinkley
