Mile Mile 217.5 - Cumberland Knob

Located near the Virginia state line, Cumberland Knob was the site where construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway was started in 1935 as a part of President Roosevelt's Civilian Conservation Corps. It was therefore the first recreation area to be opened to the public, and is still a favorite destination for both locals and visitors. The mixture of lush woodlands and open fields, housing a variety of birds and other wildlife, is ideal for leisurely walks or a more demanding hike to nearby Gully Creek.

Visitor Center

There is a visitor center and bookstore located in the Cumberland Knob developed area where visitors can find information about the area and browse publications on the Parkway.

Picnic Area

There is a 33-site picnic area with comfort stations located in the Cumberland Knob developed area.

Trails

There are two trails accessible from the visitor center that range from easy to strenuous. The Cumberland Knob Trail is a 20-minute stroll through a mixed hardwood forest. The more serious hiker will find the Gully Creek Trail a greater challenge.

Fishing

There is fishing available in the Chestnut Creek area, mileposts 215 - 217. Anyone with a valid Virginia or North Carolina fishing license is welcome, but please check at the visitor center for any special regulations.

Mile 218.6 - Fox Hunters Paradise

Fox Hunters Paradise is a 10-minute walk, is where hunters could listen to their hounds baying in the valley below.
