Brief
Encounter
"Then and Now"
Unlike most of the films, shot in the 1940's, quite a lot of Brief
Encounter was filmed "on location". The studio scenes were, of course,
"sets", and have long since gone, but some of the locations can still be seen.
Brief Encounter had three main locations away from the studio.
Carnforth Station was the main location, where all of the railway scenes were filmed
(Contrary to folklore, and report on one commercial video tape Watford Junction Station
was NOT used as a filming location). The street scenes were filmed both in the studio, and
also Beaconsfield, and the little bridge, where Laura and Alec go (twice) for a day out in
the countryside was "Middle Fell" bridge over Langdale Beck at national grid
reference NY 285060. This bridge is still there and is a short distance from the Old
Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, near to Ambleside.
The above image is a composite image made up from three frames of the
film, as Laura Jesson (Celia Johnson) walks along the road. The buildings are still there,
but have changed quite a lot.

Carnforth Station, in Lancashire, was the fictional railway station Milford
Junction. This scene from the film is still very recognisable. In the now image,
the clock is missing. The clock was taken down whilst it was refurbished, but has now been
replaced.

The roundabout and the structurally altered building have changed this
scene, but it is still unmistakably the same location.

The street furniture and the cars are different but this scene is still
very much the same.

"Country Clothes" to
"Clich". Half a century on, but still a clothes shop.
