After the Carnforth Motive Power Depot was closed by British Railways, it became "Steamtown" a "living steam" railway museum. It enjoyed great popularity for many years, and frequently held steam "Open Days" and "Open Weekends". Public access to the site was discontinued in 1997 and the site is now home to the West Coast Railway Company.
