HISTORIC RADAR TYPES
AN/FPS-3 Surveillance Radar

Manufactured by the Bendix Corporation, the AN/FPS-3 surveillance radar was a modified version of the AN/CPS-5 radar already deployed at Montauk during 1951. This new "L-band" radar arrived at the easternmost tip of Long Island during 1952. It was capable of detecting aircraft flying at altitudes of up to 55,000 feet.
