MONTAUK AIR FORCE STATION

HISTORIC RADAR TYPES
AN/FPS-6 Height Finder Radar

During the spring of 1957 two AN/FPS-6 height finder radars and a powerful AN/FPS-20 surveillance radar were deployed at Montauk. The grouping together of a primary surveillance radar with dual height finders at Montauk was typical of air defense radar sites of this era.

The AN/FPS-6 was to become the standard height finder radar deployed at air defense radar sites nationwide. This General Electric built radar operated in the so called "S-band" at frequencies of 2700 through 2900 MHz. It had a maximum effective range of roughly 200 nautical miles and could track aircraft at altitudes of up to 75,000 feet.

Including a mobile version designated AN/MPS-14, some 450 examples of this "classic" height finder radar were produced.
