Coast Artillery Gun Emplacements

The Montauk Air Force Station was preceded by the Army's Camp Hero, a Coast Artillery site sporting two large 16-inch caliber naval guns. Montauk's big guns were in active service throughout the Second World War. The twin gun emplacements were linked with internal powder and shell magazines, the entire complex being buried under an artificial hill for additional protection and for camoflage.
