CAMP HERO & MONTAUK AIR FORCE STATION

Welcome!

Welcome to the Camp Hero and Montauk Air Force Station Web site!

Strategically located at the easternmost extremity of Long Island, Camp Hero and the Montauk Air Force Station helped to defend the New York metropolitan area and the nation for roughly half a century.

Camp Hero's impressive Coast Artillery gun emplacements served to deter enemy ships throughout the Second World War. During the Cold War, the big guns were replaced by Air Force operated radars designed to detect the approach of nuclear armed Soviet bombers. The Montauk base was subsequently known as the Montauk Air Force Station.

This Web site presents information documenting the history of Camp Hero and the Montauk Air Force Station. Information regarding the gun batteries and the diverse array of Cold War era radar equipment formerly deployed at Montauk, will also be included. Additionally, this site will present information relating to preservation and restoration efforts.

A limited amount of Web site content is available at this time. Additional information and new Web pages are planned and will be added during the weeks and months ahead.
