OLD MOTHER RILEY MEETS THE VAMPIRE

aka MY SON THE VAMPIRE

The last of the long-running series of farces starring Lucan as the Irish washerwoman and his manager/wife (Kitty McShane) as 'her' daughter. Bela Lugosi is the mad doctor, Van Hoosen, who dresses and behaves as a vampire should. The plot has a robot kidnap Mother Riley and pit her against Van Hoosen and the denizens of his old dark house. Immensely popular in the provinces, the film used topical fears about rent collectors and food shortages as basic comic material. The director John Gilling later made some good horror movies for Hammer, including The Reptile and The Plague of the Zombies (both 1966).
