Heero is by far the most reckless of the five Gundam pilots.  He cares nothing about himself, putting his entire being into the mission.  He will set his own broken bones and pilot mobile suits with injuries that would sideline others.  And when there is no battle for him to fight, he will take up other causes and fight as though they were his own just because he cannot live without fighting.

At the beginning of the series, Heero is a cold, silent individual.  But through meeting the four other pilots and several others, including Relena and Zechs, he evolves his personality.  While still rather silent, he begins to show care and compassion for others and begins to think more of life.  The latter is shown best with the following comparison: Heero self-detonates his Gundam at the beginning of the series because it was implied that he should do so.  Without direct orders, he was prepared to take his own life to complete the mission given to him even though it was unsalvageable.  However, at the end, he is determined to make it through the final fight, saying to himself, or perhaps to Wing Zero, "I will survive!"
