I thought I would share my good fortune with you and see if anyone has advice or comments. The first item is a Seasport 80 VHF Radio which I paid $165 (Canadian) for. This was a Toronto Boat Show special. This particular fixed mount radio is manufactured in Hong Kong. I am interested in hearing comments (positive or negative) from other owners who may have this particular radio. Also, I am looking for suggestions as to where to mount the unit. It is important that the radio be out of the way of my two toddlers. The second item is a 5kg (11 lb) copy of a Bruce anchor. The Boat Show price for this particular anchor was $69C. This basically completes my anchoring system which consists of the following: Main anchor and rode consists of 13 lb high tensile danforth with 20 feet of 1/4 inch chain and 150 feet of 3/8 inch line. Second anchor and rode consists of 11 lb bruce copy anchor with 10 feet of chain and 100 feet of 3/8 inch line. Any comments or suggestions? Lastly, I am preparing to install a Plastimo Mini Contest bulkhead mount compass (purchased from West Marine last December). Is there a preferred location for mounting such as the port or starboard bulkhead and what spot on the bulkhead. Also, I have to drill a large hole for this unit. Any suggestions as to how to proceed with a minimum of boat damage? Any comments or suggestions will be received with interest. The simplest and a very effective method is to remove the wires (attach a long cord at the free end so you can re-run the wires again) and then attach nylon cable ties in groups of three, fanned out like a tripod, at intervals along the wire bundle. Do NOT clip the excess length off the wire ties. These will act like spider legs to prevent the wire bundle from slapping free against the mast. How do you get 'em out of the mast? Don't you have to drill out the rivets either at the top or bottom? While the Bay Area water temperatures aren't as severe as in the North Atlantic, the water temperature in SF Bay never gets higher than the mid-50s, even in the summer. There is significant risk of immersion hyperthermia in water 77 deg or cooler, according to the article. It says that if you're wearing a PFD and you survive the first few minutes in the water, there's a chance of surviving for up to four hours. But that's a big 'if' because there are at least three ways you can die in those first few minutes. The involuntary gasp Doug describes results in water aspiration - drowning in the conventional sense. Another possibility, about 10 percent, is that the larynx goes into spasms so that you can't take in any air (or water) and you suffocate. The third possibility is cardiac arrest due to the precipitous rise in blood pressure and heart rate. The subject of hypothermia has been extensively studied, and the article gives advice on how to increase your survival chances in the water and after rescue. The article concludes with the best advice of all - make damn sure you never fall overboard in the first place. If there is still some interest, this seems like a good time to organize something. I know that some of you keep your boats in the water all season, but perhaps you would be willing to trailer a few times per year to participate in group events. So let's hear it; who is interested in such a group, where do you keep your boats, and how far would you be willing to travel? You should also mention how many times per year you'd like to get together, your usual crew mix (kids/adults), and your preference for daysailing and overnighting. I'll start - Yes, I'm interested! I trailer from Bloomington, and would be willing to travel up to an hour for a daysail, maybe 2-3 hours for an overnighter. My crew includes two adults and two kids (ages 6 and 8). We'd like to do some overnighting this year, but would probably prefer daysails. 2-4 events per season sounds good to me, though perhaps more should be organized since it's unlikely everyone will make it to all events. Obviously, I'm willing to plan some events, but I don't want to do it all myself. Any other interest out there? -- Eric L. And all I can think about is.....what's the sailing like? (Well, ok, it's not the only thing) I see a few lakes close by, but is there any wind? Are the lakes sail-friendly, or full of jetskis and powerboats? I looked in the Knoxville yellowpages, and didn't see a single sailboat store. Bad sign. Anyone live out that way? Thanks! Pederson S/V Necessity >Bloomington, MN P-19 #970 >eric@winternet.com Eric- If you want to plan an event in your area, we'll be glad to publicize it on the Potter Yachters web page and the club newsletter (is that ok, Kent?). There may already be some Potter Yachters in the area who aren't on the Internet but receive the newsletter. Since we were the only Potter club in the country for many years, many Potter owners around the country and beyond joined mainly to get the newsletter. This e-mail group has somewhat supplanted the Potter Yachter newsletter as a means of communication among Potterers, but there are still many who are not connected to the Internet. It might be easier to form a local chapter of the Potter Yachters than to form a new club, although the PY is a pretty casual organization - no charter or bylaws, and the officers are usually whoever is willing to do the work. That means we carefully avoid making any money so we don't have tax complications. We have an annual general meeting 'brunch' on New Years Day (where we "elect" whoever has volunteered) and occasional officers' meetings. Despite this casual structure, or because of it, the Potter Yachters are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. The main advantages to forming a PY chapter outside the Bay Area would be the benefits of an existing newsletter and web page, an established name, and a handsome burgee. Club officers do not have to live in the Bay Area although each area would need some kind of "fleet captain" to organize local events. (Our newsletter was successfully edited in Washington one year.) Since we're not a racing organization and don't have bylaws, there is nothing to "enforce," so there shouldn't be any jurisdictional disputes like you might have in a racing class organization. No politics, just Pottering. I trailer from Thunder Bay, Ontario, and would be willing to travel up to six hours to participate in a weekend event. My crew includes two adults and two kids (ages two and four). I plan to do at least five overnight trips including a week long cruise on Lake Superior. Please keep me posted as I think that it would be fun to meet some of the Minnesota Potterers. Hmmm... the idea of a Minnesota chapter of the Potter Yachters has a certain appeal, for all the reasons you cite below. > Despite this casual structure, or because of it, the Potter Yachters are > celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. No politics, just Pottering. If I get the response I expect to my call for participation, we will have enough interested people to form an organization. I'd bet that most of us don't really care if we have an independent group or a chapter of the PY, just that we HAVE an active local group of Potterers. Gordon or Kent, could you do a quick search through the mailing list for the PY Newsletter? I'd be interested to learn how many Minnesota recipients you have. -- Eric L.
