We'll be sailing primarily at Lake Pepin on the Mississippi, but would like to sail on some of the lakes up north and over on Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. We're interested in daysailing and overnighters; probably would go up north for long weekends, I imagine, maybe 3 to 4 times each summer. (I hear, however, that the mosquitoes up there are rather large--is gargantuan the right word?--and that might temper our enthusiasm for those northern lakes...) Keep us posted! They have a WWP 19 advertised in the boats for sale page of the Potter Yachter, but email to the listed address (jabn@linkport.com) keeps getting returned with an error "unknown user"?? I would like to see this boat if I can only contact the owners. We are helplessly, boatlessly gazing out the living room window at a beautiful Puget Sound! Thanks for whatever help anyone can give. I have been contemplating relocating the radio. If you have little kids, and plan to sail with them, it is imperative that you can easily handle the boat singlehadedly, either so your mate can deal with the kids (or so you or she can sail while your the other one stays home with the kids). Most mounted VHF radios I have seen are inside the cabin, meaning you must go into the cabin to use the radio, or even to hear it. I find both of these unacceptable, since if you are singlehanding you then have no access to the radio. In an emergency or bad weather, this could be critical. I am thinking of mounting the radio on the rear cabin bulkhead up near the roof, with the frojnt panel facing the companionway. It would be close enough to the companionway to allow easy access to the radio while in the cockpit, hopefully with the microphone reaching to the tiller. We also have an external speaker which we pluy into the external speaker jack, then hang it the bottom of the companionway on a hook I made for this purpose. This means we can hear the radio, even if we have to close off the companionway in bad weather. I generally have a lot of reluctance to drill holes in the boat, but in this case I do not feel as bad about it. It may be possible to mount the compass on the other side, but I would have concerns about interference of the magnetic field from the radio with the compass. Also, that may not be a good location for you to see it easily. We use hand held compasses, since they are less expensive and we have only done coastal cruising to date. Another idea we have done for our daughter is to cut a piece of plywood to fit around the mast and to give her a desk space when she sits in the V berth seat facing towards the stern. We also have put in three double tube flourescent lights, one of which is mounted above the V birth seat. Because of the shortness of the dock I had to end-tie to it, and they had some big old tires as bumpers. Why the city of Medina who has Bill Gates on their tax rolls chooses to use old tires as bumpers is beyond me. Anyways, it left skid marks all over my rub rails. Any idea how to get them off? I tried scrubbing with a green pad but that didn't do much. On another note, I had never sailed past Bill's house before. Its pretty impressive, but still way under construction... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Mar 1998 12:07:41 -0800 From: "Steven W. Mine is a '74 and I paid a little more for it, $1,300, and I think that was a good deal. This is just an ad I happened to see and since I've seen a fair number of postings by folks looking for P-15's ........Apparently the boat is in a place called Clio, which is outside of Flint. The seller says it is a year old, which I would take to be a 97 model, loaded, trailer, PERFECT CONDITION, 15 hrs. of use. Owners of newer model Potters may remember that Nissan claims it takes 10 hrs. to properly "break in" their outboard. From the picture, the boat is white-hulled and a "Great Lakes" edition, rigged for single-handing by the Lansing based broker for Potters. The seller apparently has health problems which force the sale. ASKING PRICE IS $5500!!!!!!!!. Sellers phone# is 810 686-1405. John Cairns WWP-19 #960 --------------------------------
