However,on Sat I was sailing in winds NOAA wether radio(Icarry a hand held CB for this purpose)described as 18 gusting to 26 and one of the slugs came loose.Has anyone else had this happen.Did the loft do it wrong?.Will other slugs come loose?Should I try to reattach the loose slug myself? All Advice appreciated. Regards,Morgan Maclachlan PS.Apropos earlier discussion of vehicles for potter towing.I had been using an88 Toyota pickup with a 4cyl engine. It did ok I thought. However,I just now gave that truck to my son and bought a new Mazda pickup with a 4 liter six,15 in rims and fat tires, limited slip dif.and a 5 speed auto trans. The differences are substantial in stability at highway speeds,.acceleration and getting off slippery boat ramps. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Mar 1998 08:41:01 -0800 From: Larry Costa To: West Wight Web Subject: Re: Sail slugs Message-ID: <350D561D.F45@sonic.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - West Wight Potter Website at URL http://www.lesbois.com/wwpotter/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Morgan D. I am not sure if I understand what you mean by "loose". Are you saying that it pulled out of the sail (screw on type), did it untie from the gromet, or die it pull out of the mast? If it untied you should be able to retie it (and probably better than the loft did). If it unscrewed, I would take it back and have them do the job right by installing gromets in the sail to attach the slugs to. > PS.Apropos earlier discussion of vehicles for potter towing.I had > been using an88 Toyota pickup with a 4cyl engine. It did ok I thought. > However,I just now gave that truck to my son and bought a new Mazda > pickup with a 4 liter six,15 in rims and fat tires, limited slip > dif.and a 5 speed auto trans. The differences are substantial in > stability at highway speeds,.acceleration and getting off slippery > boat ramps. Limited slip and an auto, perfect combination. Just be careful about stomping on the gas while making tight turns. Just be careful about > stomping on the gas while making tight turns. Agreed - I just put limited slips in front and rear in my 4runner and its quite nice. Temporariliy pulling some pressure from the rear wheels helps a lot too in getting traction up the slippery ramps. A lot of the 2wd toyotas and under geared and a lot more usable torque is available if you re-gear the rear differential. Mazda really has a 5-speed automatic? wow. I was pretty impressed that toyota had a 4-speed auto. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Mar 1998 10:33:10 -0700 From: Allen Parks To: "Morgan D. If so, the most likely cause was a stripped screw in the nylon fitting. I'm also assuming that if the fitting was any other type, there would have been a more catastrophic failure involving torn sail fabric, etc., and you would have said something more... Be advised that the only function of the slugs is to hold the luff close to the mast. There is no critical danger involved with a slug or two coming adrift, as there is a bolt rope and the tension of the halyard to hold the sail aloft and secure. Take the sail back to the loft.. this is the advantage of having a "pro" do the work; they should stand behind it and put everything right. It is a great way to communicate (with voice, instead of typing) over long distances, but without incurring long distance charges. If your soundcard supports full duplex audio, you can talk to the other party not unlike talking on the phone, where you can talk over someone and whatnot. If your soundcard only supports half duplex audio, you can still communicate but you must take turns and wait until the other party has finished speaking before you begin speaking yourself. All you need is a soundcard that supports full or half duplex audio and a microphone. I use ICQ primarily as a means of staying in instant touch with members and web gangers, but I also run Microsoft NetMeeting in case someone wants to have an actual voice conversation versus typing each other back and forth. If you try it, it is a good idea to get NetMeeting up and running first after you are logged onto your ISP. After you've got NetMeeting running, you can run ICQ or other "Instant Message" services. Most all Win95 users already have Microsoft NetMeeting bundled with Win95. If not, grab your Win95 CD and install just the Microsoft NetMeeting portion. This could be another inexpensive way for web gangers to stay in touch. --Lars S. The first bit of advice I'd offer is to start from scratch and do it yourself. I may just be a bit biased here, but I like the idea of forming your own identity and therefore, bringing something new and different to the table when groups or web gangers meet and discuss. --Lars S. Not so! so far nothing in WM or BUS. Has anyone done the mod, grey water to either thru-hull or into an on board holding tank? Sure would appreciate hearing what kind of t-valve and where available. I found out that I could lounge on the starboard side and rest my head on the boarding ladder watching the sail trim as my wife keep watch, of course my daughter lounged on top of me.  We sailed around the shallow waters of Blackwater Sound dropping the anchor half and hour before sunset to light the grill.  We were visited by a small pod of porpoise that made thier way straight toward the boat, I thought for a moment they might board us, but the adult came up about 25 yards away gave us a good looking over and the group swam right under Corky.  An hour after the sun and the wind was gone the mosquitos found us and we headed back to Moms dock under power.  A damn fine sail.     This is my first entry onto this group,  My name is Mike and I live just 25 min. north of Key Largo. I've been sailing Corky, a wwp-19, since it was delivered to my door on August 1, 1996.  My log indicates that we have had her out a total of 37 times, with four overnights, since her delivery.  Sorry abouth the lenght of this note but as Ben Franklin once said " I didn't have the time to write a short one," and to let you guys up north, looking into wet suits and stuff, know that the good weather is on its way, I've seen it.                                  Later, Mike --------------------------------
