asleep in sunAsleep in the Sun
by Hans Walter Silvester (November 1997)

Another of Silvester's documentations of the life of cats in the Greek islands. This is perhaps his best, capturing cats doing what they do best.

Catlore by Desmond Morris helps humans understand a few of the fascinating aspects of cat behavior, such as "the games cats play,""why cats like to drink dirty water" and "why do cats run madly through the house" as well as aspects of cat lore.

cats in LoveCats in Love by Suaresm Jean-Claude (Editor), J. C. Suares, Jane Martin (December 1996)

This exquisite collection of photographs and stories is a testament to the affectionate nature of cats. These "aloof" felines are caught in expressions of love to other cats, humans and other species, including dogs, horses and mice. Whether you are an animal lover or have an interest in photography, this is wonderful!

dog saves catsThe Dog Who Rescues Cats: The True Story of Ginny
by Philip Gonzalez, Leonore Fleischer (Contributor), Cleveland Amory(Introduction) (October 1996)
So what's a dog doing on this page, you might ask??? Well, this dog not only has the good sense to love cats, but she also rescues them. Ginny is a dog from Long Island who has the remarkable ability to seek out and rescue homeless cats. Not only that, but Ginny was also able to give her human, Philip Gonzalez a new focus on life after he was disabled in an industrial accident. Now together they rescue helpless felines. The book is also graced by numerous photos of Ginny and her (mostly handicapped) feline family.

How To Live With A Neurotic Cat by Stephen Baker is obviously intended just as humor since we all know that cats are never neurotic - just their people. Actually has some good advice though, such as: "on the average, cats need 24 hours of sleep a day. Some need more than that. Try not to snore and disturb the cat;" "explain the rules to your cat. Then follow his;" and perhaps the best: "Cats are no bother at all. As long as you feed them right, let them sleep in your bed, scratch their back at their convenience, give them enough room ont he living room couch, play with them when they want to, talk to them at length, and spend every waking hour (theirs) with them.

Medieval Cats by Susan Herbert (1995) is a fanciful collection of "original miniature drafts" of famous medieval paintings with cats acting as "stand-ins" for humans.

My Cats Nick & Nora by Isabelle Harper and illustrated by Barry Moser (Blue Sky Press, 1995 - suggested ages 4-8) is a cute book describing how everytime the child narrator's cousin Emmie comes over to visit the first thing they do is go find Nick and Nora. Although well intentioned, the girls' birthday party for one of the cats perhaps displays why Phoebe runs whenever children come over.....and, maybe, why Azrael doesn't.

Poetry For Cats: The Definitive Anthology of Distinguished Feline Verse (collected by Henry Beard) - This book is a must for any lover of cats or poetry. Here is an excerpt from our favorite: "Grendel's Dog, fro Beocat" by the Old English Epic's Unknown Author's cat:

"Brave Beocat, brood-kit of Ecgthmeow,
Hearth-pet of Hrothgar in whose high halls
He mauled without mercy many fat mice,
Night did not find napping nor snack-feasting.
The wary war-cat, whiskered paw-wielder,
Bearer of the burnished neck-belt, gold-braided collar band,
Feller of fleas fatal, too, to ticks, (. . .)"

Other favorites are "The End of the Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe's Cat, "To a Vase" by Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Cat and "Hamlet's Cat's Sililoquy, from Hamlet's Cat by William Shakespeare's cat. You get the idea.

scarlettScarlett Saves Her Family: The Heart-Warming True
Story of a Homeless Mother Cat Who Rescued Her
Kittens from a Raging Fire
Jane Martin (Contributor), J. C. Suares (October 1997)

We remember when we first heard of Scarlett's amazing rescue on TV and then we followed the story in the North Shore Animal Shelter's Newsletter. This book captures the entire story, from the firemen and vets who first aided Scarlett and her kittens after the fire to the media frenzy to the happy ending in which Scarlett and her brood regained their health and found loving homes. Perhaps the most eloquent transmission of this heartwarming story is through the amazing photographs of the severley burned Scarlett who at first is barely recognizable as a cat, but in later photographs is revealed a healthy, happy animal. Likewise we get to witness the kittens growth from tiny singed bundles into beautifully healthy cats. This is wonderful, inspiring book for animal lovers of all ages!
