18th Centuary

During the British Raj, Bengal had gone through another period of growth and development. Culcutta became one of the most important centres of commerce, education, culture and the arts on the subcontinent.

19th Centuary

1905 - Lord Curzon, the viceroy of India decided to partion Bengal for administrative purposes, creating a new province of East Bengal and Assam, with it's capital at Dhaka.

The Indian National Congress was formed which was orginally supported by both Hindus and Muslims. But the divisions of Bengal was seen as a religious partition, promoting the formation of the All India Muslim League in the following year.

1912 - By this time the partition of Bengal was opposed, and so the split provinces were renunited.
